One bit of cinematic context that helped the kamikaze pilot narrative really put me on the edge of my seat was the fact that this same director, 10 years ago made a pro kamikaze movie that was widely criticized by the Japanese left and widely celebrated by the Japanese hard right. So I was convinced that all of the people who were saying "we should live" would die and the movie would end up agreeing with the kamikaze spirit.
