Creator Commentary: The Curious Case of Sandy Melgar + Update

Another Commentary to tide you over!

Here’s the podcast that goes hard on the guilt argument for Sandy: https://www.truthisjustice.com/ - it’ll be on all the podcast apps too obviously.

West Memphis Three Update is at 1:09:55 but here’s the short version:

I’ve completed the script. It’s a lot longer than usual in terms of talk time (dunno what the runtime will be, because there’s less raw audio and footage, but a good size for sure) which means voicing and animating will also take a while. I’ve got a STRETCH TARGET for end of November, but there is a  good chance that just won't be achievable. Absolute worst case scenario is December 15. Most likely it will fall some time between the best case and worst case. I will definitely post here just to let you know where everything is at if we get to Nov 30 and it’s still got a ways to go.

I think the script has a really nice flow to it, and nothing like it I’m aware of has ever really been done with the case so I’m really looking forward to finishing it and seeing what y’all think!

Thanks so much as always for your patience and support :)

I assume you don’t mean *golden age* Simpsons??? Yeah, I’m a super fan. I literally think Season 3-9ish of South Park was the best show that has ever aired - period. Counting all other genres of television. Extreme, but it holds a special place in my heart. 2008 sounds about right for the falloff, but it’s still stayed pretty great for the most part. Some weak seasons and some extremely weak episodes, but there’s never been a steep, consistent decline. Current season is probably the strongest since the first PC principal one

Matt Orchard

I’m with you on how well South Park has aged compared to other similar shows from the time (Family Guy, Futurama, Simpsons, have not aged well at all) but I can go back to early South Park and still laugh my ass off. Been binging it but seems to have fallen off around 2008 ish.

i can’t find the truthisjustice podcast on apple podcasts or anything ??

Promise not to turn this into a live blog of the commentary. But. Her "aloofness" to the question - why are we here? my husband got murdered. I read that as her just being like "ask a stupid question get a stupid answer". Maybe I am projecting too much but I just think she is in shock, in pain, tired and then she had these motherfucking morons asking her stupid questions. I get the sense when they ask her what happened she wants to reply "you're the police you tell me". But she doesn't because she's too polite. She is just woefully underprepared for the police being useless and I wonder if she's also having to come to terms with that fact during this interview too. If she lived the type of life where you respect the police and trust them and never dealt with them before then this is another worldview she is having to change and challenge alongside the brutal murder of her husband.

I know I am very late to this one - work is real busy atm. I just want to pause on the "think" I need lawyer. I could totally see myself saying that, tired in pain in a room with two idiots mourning Mr Ticket - "I'm sorry but please may I have a lawyer". Even though inside I am screaming fuck you and very much team don't trust the po-po don't say anything to them. The socialisation of women to not be demanding, means I read "I think" as her demand. For me the interview should have ended there and this just shows the state is looking out for loopholes not you. I just don't see someone like her guilty or innocent saying "I want" or "gimme". I understand where you come from that why didn't she straight up demand why play these linguistic games - does it tell us something about her guilt? But no I think it is more telling of the systematic issues in culture/patriarchy than her guilt or innocence.

Rats, I raced to the comments to see if someone had unearthed your episode of Deadly Women. Granted, there are ~200 of them (and ran with some pauses for 18 years), so I shouldn't be surprised. Ah well.

Hey Matt, love your content, easily the best true crime stuff going. Wanted to mention that there is a bit of a misunderstanding of JWs beliefs, and how this ties into the prosecutions case for motive; JWs do not believe in a hell, and they do believe that 144k chosen ones go to heaven to rule with Christ, however they also believe that all other faithful adherents to the religion are reborn on a paradise earth and live forever. This fact entirely voids the religious aspect put forward by prosecution if Sandy is actually a believer in the church doctrine. I grew up in the religion and this is a fundamental aspect to their beliefs.

everytime I hear the "help me, I need help" I think to myself, "you sure do chief"

Thanks Brian, welcome aboard!

Matt I'm a Patreon newbie. Your programs are the reason. Personally I thought your downward voice inflexion was okay. Keep up the good work mate

Man, I love these commentaries but damn this player is so bad. I understand why you don't want to put them on YT, though.

Thanks Kayleigh! Yeah, I read a couple of books including Devil's Knot last year and used them as part of my points of reference while writing the script :)

Matt Orchard

Your JonBenét Ramsey video is also one of my favorites for the same reason. You told a story with some twists, but as you acknowledged not too many. That is why I can confidently say I have watched every one of your videos at least twice, and I continually recommend my friends watch them

I am SO excited to hear your take on West Memphis 3. It is just that case for me that has kept me up at night. Not sure if you read whole books as part of your research, but I would recommend Devils Knot by Mara Leveritt. Such a good read on the case. Anyways, thanks for another great commentary 😊

That’s actually a big thing about the WM3 vid! I tried to think of how a novel might go rather than a crime break down

Matt Orchard

This is actually one of my favorite videos of yours. I am a huge fan of when the story is told as a story as opposed to a timeline. Side note the Help me, Help me guy irritates me more than some criminals.

I remember when I was watching this at the time thinking the interrigator was incredibly annoying, so glad you agree lol Edit: Also totally agree re Colleen Barnett...
