Creator Commentary: Psychology of a Douchebag - The Case of Basil Borutski

Another Creator Commentary to start/end the month! I probably talk about the actual video half the time, if that. Other topics include getting busted for pot in my early 20s and the submersible saga.

CHANNEL UPDATES: Still waiting on that damn Bodycam footage with July the 4th surely slowing down the process even more. Sigh... Been working on another project in the meantime though, so Patron's aren't really effected.

JOIN THE DISCORD: If you haven't already, hop on! We did a test stream the other week and I thought it was a lot of fun. Planning to do more in the near future - Movie watch alongs and the like. Link: https://discord.gg/VfUCy8FK9t

Let me know any thoughts or questions below and thanks as always for your support!

It wouldn't have to be anything super high tech, you could even just play the video in any video player and record that window along with your voice. You probably use OBS already, it could do that fairly easily. Totally fair if you don't want to do that though, especially if you're on a tight schedule. It's up to you, of course. No matter what, I'll still be watching your stuff.

I could look at it, wouldn’t want to do it too much and go for hours and hours though. One of the main problems would just be figuring out the tech to pause the video and keep the timing in sync when resuming

I agree abt positive experiences w police-- as a white person cops will usually treat you alright.

Sorry for the double post, I thought my comment was more likely to be seen here than on YouTube. Hey Matt! Just subbed to your Patreon a few days ago, and I've been crashing through all the exclusive content like a bull in a china shop. I did actually hear your little comment on Basil in the original video, I remember it made me laugh. "Jesus Christ, this fucking guy." I saw someone else mention it on another commentary, but when you do want to talk about something relating to the video, I'd personally not mind if you paused it to speak so you could address anything and everything that provokes a thought in your head. If it bothers you to have the whole video present, I know it would be extra work, but you could edit out the bits you think are unnecessary. Or not, of course. I tend to listen to your content while doing various tasks throughout the day, so it certainly wouldn't be an issue if you were putting out commentaries that were more than a few hours long. For some of us, it would just mean not having to click off to another video as often. Anyways, thanks for all your hard work, I'll be supporting you!

My daughter and Nathalie Warmerdams daughter are best friends and we lived just down the road from them. Nathalie did everything right, reporting to police, she also had an alert button direct to police, all for nothing. Boris had never been reprimanded by his probation officer for flouting court orders. The court orders weren’t worth the paper they were written on. Boris tried to take her property, was abusive to her son, and ultimately took her life. Her son Adrian is lucky to be alive. He ran out of the house and hid in the forest or he would’ve been the fourth victim for sure. RIP sweet Nathalie, Carol and Anastasia

Thanks futures, welcome aboard! There should be another one for the Larry Nassar episode around the end of the month :)

New Patron and can't get enough of the commentaries! I could listen to you ramble on about whatever for hours, I can see how you were in radio! Great behind the scenes look as well as getting some more context into decisions you made with the video. Looking forward to more and keep up the great content.

futures

Definitely keep making them, there are some I'm particularly looking forward to!

The normal YT channel :)

Where can I see these videos without the commentary?

Thanks J! Does this work? https://discord.gg/VfUCy8FK9t

I was trying to join the discord but am getting a message that the link is invalid or has expired. Any other way to join? I’m definitely digging these CC videos —- really looking forward to Chandler Halderson. The “Chandler Halderson is remarkably stupid” line might be my favorite across the entire channel. Then the lawyers that couldn’t get his name right or speak in coherent sentences. Great on so many levels.

J West

Haha, no worries Jason - thanks so much for the kind words :)

Matt Orchard

Honestly dude, the “problem” is that your main releases ARE SO GODDAMN AMAZING that I’m selfishly wanting more. Sorry my comment wasn’t more friendly. You’ve literally created some of my all time favorite true crime videos. Even surpassing JCS, in my opinion. The coldest case ever solved is so incredibly well done I’ve shared it at least with 50 people and have watched it several times. You’re remarkable at what you do and my comment was really just a shitty way to say I want more. More more more Matt Orchard. You’re rad dude.

I love these creator commentary videos! Thank you for taking the extra time to make these

Yeah, there's always those situations where the principle and the practical have that tension. Blindly sticking to a rule without any context sensitivity is a recipe for making everybody's life unnecessarily hard.

Then my honest advice would be to just not watch them. I appreciate they're niche bonuses that won't be everyone's cup of tea. Bear in mind though, they do nothing to detract from the main releases. It's just something I spend half a day on every month or so - a) for patrons that do enjoy them and b) as a reason to check in and give the people who won't be watching a quick status update on where things are at.

Matt Orchard

I think you're probably right morally. Personally I'm guilty of the occasional white lie because I just think telling the truth is going to lead to more hassle and social awkwardness than it's really worth. If a friend came to me for serious advice though, I would choose the harder option if it were necessary.

Matt Orchard

To be honest, I struggle quite a bit with white lies. I understand the "if the truth would only hurt, why tell it" point of view, but I'm not fully moved by it. There are options beyond a white lie and being a truth-telling dick. It does align with the position you shared via Sam Harris. It's about taking people seriously and equipping them with information so they can make fully informed decisions (or at least, I wasn't impeding it). If you want to put it in a dramatically high-minded way: it's about respecting a person's autonomy.
