The Endless Riddle of JonBenét Ramsey

Here it is! Thank you as always for your support! Last time at least one person was having playback issues on Patreon so just remember you can click the YT button to go and watch the unlisted video natively on YT if you have those sorts of issues.

I'm going to keep replying to the AMA thread until the new year too as barely anyone used it and I think it may have something to do with Patreon not notifying people of new posts. Not that you should feel like you HAVE to ask something or anything!

Exactly, he has great sensibilities and keen instincts which I guess are the same thing kinda... 😁

p j

Not intentionally, but if it is then nice!

Matt Orchard

is that the Tarrantino "Chapter" font?

p j

matt orchard has imo the best content on youtube.

mtscountrytime86

Love your videos. You came to YouTube with insanely high quality content right from the start. You have a great talent for the perfect combination of analysis and entertainment. I’m thoroughly impressed. I always look forward to a new video from you, but appreciate that producing such extensive work takes time- so I never mind patiently waiting. I hope you have a great new year.

Betsy

At 68min, 56sec: That Dr. Werner Spitz has an amazing wig (sarcastic).

Sean Behrens

Det. Arndt is a bit corny. Like, it's all about her, you know. And, she did not follow police procedure, if she did this case wouldn't have some many questions. Meaning, she's not the best cop out there.

Sean Behrens

I understand about Burke. But, the guy does have Asperger's which means they are socially unaware, and have near zero social instincts. But if it was Burke with the parents knowing about it, then Burke would have left evidence, any 9 year old would have left compelling evidence. And if it was Burke with the parents knowing then their home life would have been riddled with obvious child abuse in other areas. Parents don't just cover up for the kid who murdered their other kid without other factors being observed, like a history of fraud or lying, beating their kids, adultery, or being solitary with neighbors. None of which occurred. Also, if the parents wrote the note they would have made the ransom a million dollars to make it believable for the police.

Sean Behrens

I read an essay about this case by John E. Douglas and he says that the ransom note is many cinematic references in it, like the 'exhausting delivery' that is from the 1996 movie "Ransom with Gary Sinise and Mel Gibson. And the 'grow a brain' line was actually written by Joss Whedon for 1994's "Speed". And others. John E. Douglas thinks it was an intruder trying to punish John, and the intruder might have brought a ransom note with him but decided to write one on premise, perhaps this was the intruder's plan the whole time just in case he did not find writing implements. The intruder is probably someone from John's job, or a son of one of his colleagues.

Sean Behrens

I heard there was male DNA found on the the body. It hasn't found a match yet.

Sean Behrens

Just finished the video for the third time. This might be the best, most comprehensive piece I’ve ever seen on this murder and I have seen a lot! While I know that reading body language is often seen as pseudo-science, I simply cannot get over Burke’s interview with doctor Phil. I have a younger sister who is alive and well and the mere thought of having to attend her funeral makes me choke up, especially when thinking about her dying so tragically young. Him smiling while describing her lifeless body during her viewing will never sit right with me.

Michael M

I hadnt joined the patreon yet but I needed to see this one ASAP!

Michael M

Hmm. If Patsy wrote the letter, wouldn’t she actually NOT give two poops about calling the police because she knew the ransom was bogus? Awesome video, yet again. Thank you!

Kim Jakab

Just joined your Patreon and was thrilled to happen upon this gem of a video. Personally I am in the "curl up in the fetal position and weep" camp. What an absolute mess! I appreciate your work so much - few content creators encourage objective and critical thinking to the extent you do. Thank you for all your efforts. Can't wait to see what you come out with next!

Bex McKenna

Thanks so much Jacob, really appreciate it :)

Matt Orchard

Thanks Richard. I agree the humanity of the subjects can often be overlooked, and probably my own videos are sometimes guilty of that - which is fine, they are analysis videos not eulogies at the end of the day. I think JB really is the quintessential example of a victim who got turned largely into a character - probably on account of the beauty pageants especially. So I really made a conscious effort to not play that part up and end everything on her humanity. I'm really glad you appreciated that.

Matt Orchard

Thanks Shola, Merry Christmas to you!

Matt Orchard

Probably will do some day, I've never done a real deep dive on it so I'd be starting with a blank slate which is good...Don't they think there's a decent chance they have the culprit in custody now?

Matt Orchard

Thanks Caleb!

Matt Orchard

Thanks DeadHeroes, glad you enjoyed it!

Matt Orchard

Thanks Charlie, interesting theory about the window. Anything is possible with this case.

Matt Orchard

Thanks Daniel, welcome aboard!

Matt Orchard

Thanks so much Seth, Merry Christmas to you and yours :)

Matt Orchard

Thanks Jade, glad you enjoyed it!

Matt, I've watched each of your videos dozens of times. I love the editing and the personal touch you add to each of them. That being said, my two favorites have to be "You're the Only One that Deserved to Stay," and this episode. To date, of the endless true crime content I've consumed, these two videos alone have made me cry every time I've watched them. You have an amazing gift, sir. You can take the most horrific, unimaginable stories and draw out the humanity, and suffering, and frustration, of everyone involved, and do it so painfully beautiful. Well done, well done. Man. That ending hit really hard. You do an amazing job of reminding the world that victims are human beings that were loved and alive, and not merely puzzles to ponder for entertainment. You've got true talent. Please, don't even stop telling stories like these.

Jacob

I love how you ended the video reminding us that Jon Benet was a child whose life was stolen from her unnecessarily. As a fan of True Crime, often times I look at the real people involved can be looked at like characters in a Hollywood Movie,

Richard Johnson

I’m so excited cannot wait to watch this when I get home from work! Thank you Matt you have made my Christmas! Merry Christmas and look forward to your content always x

Shola Grant

Amazing. I hope you will cover Madeline McCann some day. That is a trip.

Ryan Allen

thank you for digging through the ferocious acts of human depravity in order to give us the knowledge we seek. your suffering does not go unnoticed. for every second we had to look at that beautiful little innocent girl in the face, I'm sure there's a thousand more seconds where you had to do the same. again, thank you.

Caleb Moose

Kind of - since you've not seen it and have expressed the potential that you might I don't want to give it away haha but in case you just want to know I'll write it below. Last warning now: The story is regarding a court case, and the circumstances of the crime are retold three times going over the same events but from the perspective of a different person's guilt. The way you introduced the various suspects in your video made me think of the movie but it's clearly my own bias at play!

Josh Evans

Fabulous job, Matt! You've left me just as undecided on a possible suspect as I was before watching. I love that you don't push the viewer towards any single conclusion. Instead, you go over the major theories and leave us to draw our own conclusions. You're a master at what you do!

Dead Heroes

I think a big thing under appreciated as part of evidence in this case was the broken window. How unusual is it for a Father with young children to allow an obvious risk of someone entering the home to go without being fixed for so long. The broken window was done on purpose to allow for lack of a noise and lack of physical damage when explaining how an intruder entered but done so far in advance it would not be suspicious

charlie carter

What a great watch, brilliant as always Matt.

charlie carter

This is the one that got me to fork over the fiver. Great job as always. I was 100% unfamiliar with this case but find it thematically similar to the Bain case. All possible alternatives have big holes, and the crime scene mishandling makes things even harder.

Daniel Huslig

I was about as unfamiliar with the JBR case as I could have been going into the video as soon as I heard Matt Orchard was making a documentary about it. I just finished the video and am blown away. As a father of two girls, 6 & 3, the epilogue almost made me cry. Thank you for stating the obvious in that Jon Benet was just a normal 6 year old girl that loved things most 6 year old girls love, full of innocence…..a fact often overlooked in the True Crime genre. Well done Matt. Thanks for all the time you invest in making these videos, you really are a genius. I’m already excited to see what you come up with next! I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas 🎄👑🎁

Seth Smole

Matt this was incredible 💜 thank you so much 💜

Jade Wooding

At 41:52 Patsy's remarks about the reward really creeped me out.

Amanda Boo Berry

Wonderful video! Glad I became a Patron!

porkchop

In that second interview the dad is hiding a smile the whole time, agree? It's referred to as a duper's delight, where a person smirks when they know/are sure they are fooling people.

JJ

F YEAH! I've been obsessively checking Patreon for over a week waiting for this! Thank you so much, Matt. Phenomenal work as always. Happy holidays to you and yours!

MourningDove

Saw the alert just getting a chance to watch now. yesss : )

JJ

Ughhh. I HATE unsolved cases. Excellently produced as usual, but I haaate this case >:(. Just the worst when there is no resolution. Also, my tiny contribution for viewers, I also smile involuntarily in certain situations where I'm uncomfortable. It is a bizarre response I can't control- at times I will also have completely inappropriate fits of laughter when overcome by uncomfortable emotion. This does not at all prove that Burke Ramsay is smiling for the same reasons, but to me he appears uncomfortable and stressed as opposed to gleeful, relaxed and happy which further supports that his emotions are not so out of place in relation to the situation. I love that Matt Orchard acknowledged that smiling didn’t automatically insinuate guilt. Body language is more complex than to believe smiles and laughter only occur when someone is relaxed and happy

Emily Chirnside

Nope, I'll try to give it a watch. Do you you mean he structures it like chapters of a book?

Matt Orchard

I really enjoyed that movie.

Lucy

Christmas came early! So excited to sit down with some wine and pizza for this one.

Brooke Ent

Can’t wait to watch when I get home

Alton Gaston

Apropos of nothing, I have watched so many true crime shows and have seen Werner Herzogs name and face so many times I feel like I kinda know the old forensic legend. Lol I always hang on to his every word when he’s speaking because he says everything in such a profound way. Thank you for reading my random input

Jon Evans

Matt, have you watched The Last Duel by Ridley Scott recently by any chance? I watched it Saturday and it's probably pure coincidence , and I don't want to spoil anything, but the way it's laid out is almost identical to how you've formatted this video haha probably just in my head. Another great video, thank you!

Josh Evans

Thank you Matt, and well done so excited to watch now!

Ciarán Gallagher

Thanks Matt, Merry Christmas 🎄
