Update/AMA
Added 2021-11-30 20:45:20 +0000 UTCHowdy All!
I said I was aiming for a Patreon premiere of the Ramsey video (I'm thinking The Endless Riddle of JonBenét Ramsey could be a cool title but not sure if the use of the word "riddle" is 100 percent correct) on December 20th but that it would be tough. The good news is I think I'm on schedule. The bad news is it's still going to be tough, lol. I will let you know in advance if it looks like it will be significantly longer than that. If you don't hear from me and it doesn't come on the 20th, that means I'm confident it's only a day or two away.
In the meantime I'm going to do a rolling AMA which will serve as a nice excuse to take quick breaks from this torturous 40 page script I'm doing the VO for now. Just drop a question in whenever you feel like it and it will be answered in due course. Doesn't have to be about the channel, I had a few pop culture questions last time. I'll keep an eye on the thread until Ramsey comes out so there's no rush if nothing comes to mind right now.
Thanks again for your support :)

Hey sorry I missed this. It looks like an interesting case but as it is with most NZ cases there probably just wouldn't be enough footage to tie it together. Even David Bain was difficult to make because of that and it's literally the BEST NZ candidate due to how much is online. Grace Millane is the only other one that comes to mind that might be possible to do.

2022-04-20 23:33:07 +0000 UTCHey Matt, I'm late to this but as a fellow Kiwi wanted to ask if you think there's a doc to be made out of the Sophie Elliot/Clayton Weatherston crime and trial?

2022-03-01 16:16:49 +0000 UTCIt is a riddle! It's been a fave case of mine for 20 years. And we all know what happened. To an extent. The pineapple, in the kitchen, with the cover up. Well, that's my thinking. Great coverage!

2021-12-21 23:58:41 +0000 UTCThanks for the reply! Funny that you bring up "fish and chips". I've heard that that was the easiest way for North Americans to quickly tell if someone was from Australia or New Zealand. I guess it's true!

2021-12-21 00:11:22 +0000 UTCOh tons. Anything that has no associated raw footage is pretty much immediately out. In terms of something I don't think I could *deal* with - I mentioned in my interview with WickedSupreme I would struggle with a deep dive on James Bulger because the details are just so cruel and obscene.

2021-12-20 22:24:06 +0000 UTCI don't know what the specific laws are in that regard in NZ. I don't think we really have DIY Pedo Catchers here so that particular issue probably doesn't come up. Interesting about the grooming thing. In fairness to them, I think the decoys know they're decoys so they wouldn't ever be under the impression sex is actually going to happen. The OTHER thing about that that I wondered about is it seems in many cases those guys are too lazy to get a decoy. Like the share volume of catches suggest they are literally just trolling dating apps pretending to be minors. The thought I had about that is in those cases could a decent defense (not that just about any of them go to court anyway) be that you can't be charged with victimizing a child that doesn't exist? The whole "I knew you weren't actually 14" line might hold some water even though it's obviously bullshit. If you just stand your ground on "it was obvious from their language they were an adult so I thought we were just role playing" no one can prove otherwise and as the person you were speaking to WAS an adult you sort of have something backing you up. There's some armchair lawyering for ya I didn't go into any of that sort of stuff in the vid because I didn't want to come across as providing a defense strategy for people trying to hook up with minors. BTW, I heard Ramy got his channel taken away recently after he made some guy jump in the Hudson River.

2021-12-20 22:21:35 +0000 UTCNot to sound unpatriotic but I haven't read deeply enough in to any NZ case to say I genuinely to and fro on it. I've read a little bit about Mark Lundy and that one *sounds* like an absolute head scratcher. Seems some of the logistics just don't work but who else would have had a decent motive for such a brutal crime unless it was someone else at his behest in which case he should rot anyway. If I did a proper deep dive on that then maybe I would end up having a more firm position on it.

2021-12-20 22:09:22 +0000 UTCMatt Orchard is the Jonah Lomu of the True Crime genre. I’d love to see a Crime & Society Blu Ray box set one day. I email/text links to help share and get the word out but I know what I do when someone sends me a video that’s longer than 45 seconds. C&S Blu Rays also help me solve Christmas Shopping for the next couple years

2021-12-20 10:49:24 +0000 UTCWith the pedophile video, in some states that I know of - those who set up the “stings“ could be charged with child Molestation themselves since they knowingly engaged in sexual conversations with a child. They are essentially grooming these children but just not doing the act. It might just be me but I think luring children into thinking they’re going to have sex with an adult (even if the adult is posing as a minor ) is disgusting. Anyone engaged in that behavior should be reported so the child could get help. Also , in some states if you fail to report known child abuse you can be charged as an accessory. Is this the same in New Zealand?

2021-12-20 04:40:29 +0000 UTCWell I guess to us our "es" just sound normal. I don't hear myself or anyone say "eeg", but to the American ear maybe it sounds a bit like that. Australians and New Zealanders often make fun of each other for the pronunciation of "Is". We think think they pronounce it like a long "e", "feesh and cheeps" and they think we pronounce it like a "u", "fush and chups"
Matt Orchard
2021-12-20 01:09:45 +0000 UTCI have kiwi cousins, and I was told that the pronunciation of the short "e" (such as Kevin and egg) is pronounced as a long "e" sound. My cousin's name is Jem and to my American ears, it always sounded like they were calling him Jim, but I guess it's closer to Jeem. Is this accurate? Btw, I love the accent. You and Internet Historian have lovely voices.

2021-12-13 11:30:12 +0000 UTCIf you go check the interview in the recent "bits n bibs" post I actually explain my relationship with JCS in some detail (sorry, it's long, can't give time stamps right now) but long story short - no, my paws have never been directly on anything they've put out. Though I've been told my video on Basil Borutski had an influence on how they approached some of their commentary on Jodi Arias. I was commissioned by them to help out with some of their workload after I put up my Leary video which lead to the Anthony Palma video. It didn't work out as an ongoing arrangement but they encouraged me to just upload the Palma vid as was and go ahead on my own which I did and here we are. Still on good terms :)

2021-12-13 11:19:40 +0000 UTCI’ve been wanting to ask you for over a year Matt, ( you can plead the 5th) if you don’t wish to answer or simply say no. I’ve suspected for over a year that you were on the original JCS “team”, and struck out on your own. I came to the idea after looking at drop dates of videos for both channels, when that started, as well as many other observations too numerous to bore you with. Again, just curious and won’t be offended if you choose to ignore me either. Thank you, and have a great holiday!

2021-12-13 10:58:23 +0000 UTCI've heard good things about DL before. To be totally honest I probably won't watch his vid on it. 2021-12-07 02:14:29 +0000 UTC99 percent one man show. I do often hit up knowledgeable people in the case/topic I'm looking at to see if I can get their input and, if they're kind enough, proofread some of my script for errors. A Ramsey case "enthusiast" looked over a scientific portion of this script for instance and I had little bit of fact checking help from a volunteer too so a bit of that kind of help here and there. I also have a graphic designer who makes the thumbnails look good - Alex, he's thanked in every description and pinned comment. But aside form that sort of thing it's just little ol' me.

2021-12-05 03:59:35 +0000 UTCSorry to hear about your troubles, very glad to hear my content has helped you through tough times. I didn't take it down, it was copyright struck by a photographer or someone at McLeans magazine because I used a portrait image from their article. It's pretty silly because that picture is featured in other videos and I'm pretty sure the extent of it's time on screen would put it within the parameters of fair use. Fact of the matter is if IP was enforced that rigorously across the board probably 90 percent of YT content would be wiped. I didn't dispute it though because it wasn't worth drama with the magazine. A thing I will probably do in the future is paywall select archive videos and introduce a lower Patreon tier so people aren't forced to pay full $5 if all they want to do is be able to watch older vids and I'll make TC one of those. In the meantime, as you say, the old unlisted premiere is still there :)

2021-12-03 21:56:14 +0000 UTCI'm very much looking forward to that new video! Try not to overwork yourself, it is the holiday season after all. If I may ask though, why did you take down the Thomas Chan video? Thank you for making that and for being so sympathetic, yet neutral about Thomas. That meant more than you know to me, and I'm sure many others who can personally empathize with anybody involved with that story. I must've watched it over a dozen times when it came out; it helped me through very hard times I was going through mentally and eventually helped me accept, something strangely similar actually, that left 1 very close to me dead & the other in prison and reminded me of something else I've been through personally. God Bless Them All. And thank you again, so much, I can not explain how therapeutic that video was for me. I'm glad I have it here on Patreon so I can watch it again, and glad to be helping out my favorite creator. Have a very happy holiday to you and yours, Matt.

2021-12-03 17:52:41 +0000 UTCYou know what's funny just a s a side note - I've heard from several core fans that Polygraph and Memory Wars are among their favorites and I'm really proud of them too, yet they're among the least viewed. It just goes to show view count really isn't the only metric to put stock in. Ultimately I'll do any topic I find interesting that has enough material to work with. The idea of doing a forensic pseudo-science ep is interesting. Like there might be several of those sorts of things that don't have enough material to stretch out into a feature but if you combined 3 or 4 it could maybe work. Kathleen Folbigg looks fascinating but the nature of that case would probably lend itself more to a case study within a broader video like I was describing.
Matt Orchard
2021-12-01 22:40:44 +0000 UTC40 pages 🙀 you could have a phd in criminology by now! always love your take on things- some of my faves were the polygraph one and the one about the “memory wars” (i had coincidentally just finished watching an old contemporaneous pbs frontline about that). would you consider doing another vid like that, like um... not about a specific case but about something like “super predators” or the absolutely farcical war on drugs that ruined peoples lives (i say as i eat cannabis chocolate 😹 but everything is easier in canada, eh? lol) or peeps like kathleen folbigg who got locked up because her children died and they claimed it was too improbable (with incorrect maths i may add) or yknow... the idea that “eyewitness testimony” is the best thing you can have or... sorry this is rambling now, but regardless- thanks for putting so much work/thought into what you do❤️

2021-12-01 17:40:02 +0000 UTCThanks so much! Yeah I absolutely have thought about it. It looked like it was a way more entertaining trial than Chauvin's and it has all that raw material so it's definitely on the maybe list. Trials are really hard and take lots of time so it certainly wont be next after Ramsey because I'll want to take it easy for a bit after this one. After that though, possibly. It looked to me like the legal argument in that case was pretty cut n dried so if I'm right on that one challenge would just be figuring out how to make it dynamic. There's already a million vids ripping the prosecution and there's no point in making things seem murkier than they really are just for originality. The Chauvin situation was quite straight forward legally too imo, but the difference there was a lot of people were missing the brass tacks stuff because of all the emotion. A lot of the content made about Rittenhouse HAS been about the brass tacks stuff. So yeah, bit of a different animal.

2021-12-01 07:48:35 +0000 UTCActually I do have a question, could we see something like the George Floyd video be done with the rittenhouse trial? I don’t think there’s a connection or anything I’m just wondering if you thought about it

2021-12-01 03:55:31 +0000 UTCI've watched the entire interrogation of her and her boyfriend's mother so I know those are out there too. Not sure if the boyfriend's tape is in the public record. I think she's particularly interesting because in some ways she's a victim of terrible abuse (but so are pretty much all killers), but there appears to be evidence the killing involved a sexual aspect for her including reports she and the boyfriend had sex in her mother's blood. Her story is so multifaceted that some people see her as only a victim but then the killing seems to have brought her pleasure which immediately takes her into the sadistic killer category. Also (as a female myself who was severely abused by a female sadist), I'm always angered that people often don't view female criminals in the same way as males and that women usually get much lighter sentences for the same crimes. All of these aspects make the Gypsy Rose case extremely fascinating and I'd love your take on it

2021-12-01 00:15:21 +0000 UTCI'm not well read enough on it to have a strong opinion personally. I was talking to a friend about it at a bar a month ago. He actually went to high school with Ben Smart and was giving me the rundown on a bunch of the case evidence. Sounded to me like it had reasonable doubt up to its eyeballs. It's also one of those cases that presents an ethical dilemma for our parole system. Denied for a fourth time just today I see and may well be forever because...he won't take ownership of his actions! Maybe NZ needs something like an Alford Plea for stuff like this.

2021-11-30 23:11:43 +0000 UTCHmmm, well I don't know of any cold case that I find boring. I mean unsolved mysteries are just sort of inherently intriguing. Everyone wants to know how a story ends! In terms of overrated stuff in the crime sphere I guess I'd just go with lots of serial killers. There are some that are interesting in how well they were able to hide the depths of their evil from so many (Bundy) or where their background seems to be totally normal (Dahmer). But with others it seems people are just into them because they're morbid. John Wayne Gacy, Night Stalker, Green River Killer, Boston Strangler - who cares? The existence of serial killers is interesting but for the most part you've seen one, you've seen em all imo.

2021-11-30 22:10:36 +0000 UTCI'd consider just about any case but one thing my vids are largely dependent on is cases that have a good amount of raw footage to draw from. Even Ramsey is surprisingly difficult on that front despite being a gigantic case. It has tons of docs to draw from for B-roll at least though. A lot of people recommend cases which are super interesting but only really have articles about them online. It looks like DeeDee Blanchard has a trial on film so that's a good start.
Matt Orchard
2021-11-30 22:07:42 +0000 UTCI guess that would depend on what people would find surprising. I really like Eminem, would you have guessed that?

2021-11-30 22:03:29 +0000 UTCNew Zealand specific winter comfort food? Not my specialty, not sure if there really is something that fits the bill. When I think New Zealand food, I think of real basic things like a sausage sizzles (basically hot dogs but even simpler, a sausage wrapped in a slice of sandwich bread with tomato sauce on it. You probably do that in the UK). If you want a good winter feed I've learned how to make a mean chicken and sausage gumbo. Here's the recipe. If you look up "cajun food Binging with Babish" you can watch a technique walk through (I recommend making the roux via the normal, slow method unless you're a real pro like the guy in that vid): Chicken & Sausage Gumbo 1 small green bell pepper, diced 2 ribs celery, diced 1 small white onion, diced 6 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup all purpose flour 2 bay leaves 8 ounces beer (just not a light beer!) 4 cups chicken stock 1 lb andouille sausage, cut into coins (or smoked kielbasa) 1 lb boneless, skinless, chicken thighs Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp cayenne pepper 1 tbsp smoked paprika Cooked white rice, for serving Sliced scallions, for garnish Take 1 small green bell pepper, 2 ribs of celery, and 1 small white onion (also known as the “holy trinity”) and dice them into medium-sized pieces. Set aside for later. Mince 6 garlic cloves and set aside for later. For the roux, add ½ cup of vegetable oil to a pot and allow it to get smoking hot before adding ½ cup of all purpose flour. Using a wooden spoon or preferably a whisk, mix together until the consistency is similar to wet sand. Within 30 seconds, the roux should be the color of milk chocolate. The darker the roux gets, the more you need to stir it, but let it sit for a few seconds before continuing to stir. After about 5-6 minutes, the color of the roux should be nice and dark or similar to the color of a Hershey’s chocolate bar. Set aside some of the roux to use later. Add 2 bay leaves as well as your “holy trinity” to the pot. Make sure to set aside some of the holy trinity mix for later. Once the mixture calms down a bit, add the minced garlic to the pot. Let the roux sit for 30 seconds. Add 8 ounces of beer and stir it in and whisk to prevent the mixture from becoming clumpy. Then, add 4 cups of chicken stock and whisk using the same procedure as the beer. Take 1 lb of andouille sausage or smoked kielbasa and cut into coins. Add kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to both sides of 1 lb of boneless, skinless chicken thighs. Sear the chicken thighs in a smoking hot pan with oil. Add 1 tbsp of cayenne pepper and a pinch of salt to the roux. Turn the stovetop temperature to the lowest simmer possible and add a generous amount of black pepper to the roux. Then, add 1 tbsp of smoked paprika and stir. After browning the chicken, add it straight to the pot and set aside the remaining oil from the chicken. Next, add the chopped up sausage or smoked kielbasa to the pot. Bring the roux to a bare simmer, cover it, and let sit for a couple of hours. Serve with cooked white rice, garnish with scallions, and enjoy!

2021-11-30 22:03:08 +0000 UTCI've got an idea called "Conspiracy Series" that analyzes the plausibility of conspiracies that are by no means proven to have taken place but aren't completely insane. 2021-11-30 21:55:12 +0000 UTCBy making the videos! That's actually probably the biggest piece of advice I'd give to anyone wanting to do anything. By all means read up on tips and study other people doing it, but first and foremost just start doing that thing. Over time you naturally pick up more and more as well as figuring out where your strengths and weaknesses lie. Sometimes I'll learn about something while reading up on one project but not actually find occasion to bring it up in the final product - then It'll end up being relevant to a future project.
