Books!

Sup people! Martín here.

In the picture you'll find the books I'm currently reading. You'll also get a partial view of my feet.

Lately I've been spending a lot of time exploring some non-musical interests. These range from economics to Ai, to complexity science, statistics, and I guess genes. I've always enjoyed taking short breaks from making music in the day to listen to podcasts, read books, watch movies, etc. but lately I've been diving more deeply into these topics than I have in the past. My technical knowledge of most things is pretty limited, but lately I've made a conscious effort to be a little more hands on with some of these topics.

I've always found it very hard to focus on a single thing, and I've been known to jump to a different topic once the one I'm currently on either stops being interesting, gets too overwhelming, or sparks some random interest in some vaguely connected subject. Somehow, I always end up going back to the first one topic by the vague relatedness of topics and the cycle starts again. This is why I seem to be unable to read one single book at a time. This is also why I have a pile of unfinished books under my bed, a bunch of enrolled courses in Coursera, and many folders of unfinished musical ideas in my computer. Oops.

Regardless of how effective or ineffective this approach to learning is, I feel that taking breaks from thinking about music helps me think better when I come back to working on music. It also gives me a different perspective on things, sort of a mental palate cleanser. Exercise and going outside does that too. Even though I love making music, it can sometimes become overwhelming, and taking some time to go out, read, explore something else, or just grab a drink with a friend helps reset the mind. When work, school, or life gets overwhelming, what do you guys do to help you reset and unwind?

Also, if you have read any of these books and have suggestions on a follow-up read, or just have some recommendations on the topics mentioned above feel free to comment below! I also love to read fiction at times, so send some of those recs my way.

Just thought I'd share some non-musical update, but we'll be sharing those pretty soon as well. As always, thanks for your support, and have a lovely weekend!

Always good to have a diverse, rounded set of interests. Singular interests leads to obsession, which leads to danger. Better to draw inspiration from a combination of varied sources, so that you can in turn, inspire others.
