ha sorry about that XD

Well, nothing quite like a friendly reminder of the impending doom that faces us all.

Get in the robot Ben.

Hey that proto type looks really cool! I agree that Prix has some neat ideas and is a solid shmup overall, but as far as actually feeling like a racing game, not so much XD

The Electric Underground

I actually did make a small game prototype that attempts some shooting racing hybrid, but a multidirectional twin stick with the driver and the defender pod that absorbs shot bullets. While it does put more on the circular lab racing emphasis, the varied basic bullet types would be enough to showcase what it could be. I played Kingdom Grand Prix multiple times and agree that some racing aspects do not translate well like the AI opponents passing through without attacking the bosses. I only learned that boosting is done by holding the shot button. Otherwise, Kingdom Grand Prix is its own beast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dnGkuzCFLM

Yeah it's one of those situations where it's not a matter of regret or anything like that, more like accepting some of the tougher aspects of life that are completely out of our control, which can be really difficult at times. Ha no need to feel guilty, I think the actual review of the game will be fun as there is a ton to talk about, but it is really hard for me to get a grasp on this one. I know there are a lot of players who love the game, but I do wonder if that's more for the novelty factor, rather than the racing aspect of the game being that successfully developed. About to play some more in a few min funny enough.

The Electric Underground

Odd ... why would that be? ;-)

The Electric Underground

That is some great insight!!! I'll keep this in mind for the review!

I suddenly feel the need to watch Evangelion again...

Hey Mark, I'm really sorry to hear you're going through some difficult times right now. I really feel for you. Life can be pretty rough. As men we tend to hold it all inside... I totally get why it doesn't feel right talking about it. Feel free to reach out to me if you just want to get it off your chest neondaggergames@gmail.com As for Kingdom Grandprix... man I actually feel somewhat responsible for this one lol. I put in a vote for it and there's a decent chance that decision allowed it to cross the threshold. Somewhat ironic because for me it was basically.... I don't know what to make of this game. I've booted it up a few times and thought "what is this bumper cars shmup shit?" and kind of quit on it. But over the years I've seen it pop up enough times to suspect there's a decent game underneath. But maybe it was just an example of a gimmick that took a a game a bit further in recognition than it deserves. In any case I do look forward to your take.

For KGP, if you don't like the racing I don't think anything will save the game for you. For me, it's that it's so unique while still being a coherent game that makes it work. If you take away the racing it's pretty mediocre imo. As far as it applies to gameplay I love how winning the race is required for making it to loop 2, at which point you can ignore it. That leads me to the next best thing about it imo in that loop 2 is going to be all new levels rather than the same thing over again. Being able to modulate the speed of scrolling is also a very nice built in difficulty slider as well, if you hang back the game is nice and slow which is perfect for a novice. As you learn the game and know what the dangers aee you can speed things up. Scoring is sadly busted and high level play requires exploiting the spin glitch to bump enemies to death. I can see how for someone focused purely on gameplay there's not too much to offer but as a whole package it's just so unique and full of flavor with amazing art and music that I can't help but love it

Chinopolis

cool!

RiffMason

Thank you for the hint! Gonna use that in my review!

The Electric Underground

Hey alright, I just thought I'd comment since people don't know this, Kingdom Grand Prix does have a cheat code that allows you to completely turn the racing mechanic off and play it as a regular shmup. I'm guessing maybe the devs didn't think they'd pulled off the racing mechanic that sucessfully either.
