absolutely! It's a real shame we didn't see more development in this direction

Gradius 5 and Border Down 3d games that stood out on their consoles maybe Einhander. They're old.... but I like the level of design/ and detail.

Lost Ark

Yeah the big question with the r-type finals of the future is if they can bite that apple twice. That I'm not so sure if (though I'm not saying it's not possible). I just wonder how much of the movement factor for that game was the whole RETURN OF R-TYPE factor and how much was general interest. I'm actually really curious to see how the follow up for it goes, if they make one. I think that will be a really interesting case to study.

RTF 2 is done with Unreal 4. I know it's not your cup of tea but I really like the visual style. But tastes side: According to Wikipedia they collected around 1 mil on Kickstarter to create the game, and sold around 20-30.000 copies on Steam (if Steamdb is any indication), and probably the same number again on the consoles. So say 50.000 total at 30$ a piece, if you subtract the backers then it's probably still a nice ROI. So it may very well be that a bigger studio is looking at this and starts thinking about dusting off some old IP...

No Problem!! :-D

OH HOT DAMN of course I knew I forgot about Qute or something ha. Their games are awesome, but I don't think they have the visual power to really crossover unfortunately

Thanks for the shout in the episode 🙂

Qute's Natsuki Chronicles is another recent and non-indie JP release.

Oh wow that's interesting! I for some reason thought that it was made by a japanese dev, so you can add that to the western shmup count now

Hydorah was made by Spanish developer Loco Malito and then Abylight Studios for the Super Hydorah console and PC upgrades. There was an Exa Arcadia version in development called Super Hydorah AC, which the notable changes on the build was increased enemy difficulty and instant respawns. No other additions like new stages, weapons, or other difficulty modes from the CAX 2018 build. However, that arcade version is canceled due to difficulty moving forward. Got that from asking about that through email with Abylight Studios. It seems that the game styles will be more even level playing field worldwide.
