For sure, and really, the former is pretty well preferable in most cases, just because it offers a lot more leeway for making unrealistic proportions, expressions or otherwise. It's a big part of why the 3D movies that tend to hold up over time are ones that stylize themselves in their looks rather than pursuing true photorealism.

But when it comes to human faces, either the stylization needs to be on point, or realism needs to be on point, there's much less forgiving space on that front

2022-02-11 21:41:47 +0000 UTCAh, 3D modeling, a very risky proposition for those getting into it. Years of seeing various 3D model comics on various porn sites and always finding them to be at least a little disquieting has kind of primed me to always be a bit prepared for the uncanny. Because that's the thing about 3D modeling. If you can get good at it then you can get it nice, but there's always the risk of running into the Uncanny Valley and staying there. Admittedly, I'm coming at this with a bias toward 2D art and animation and I can readily admit that. There's obvious benefits to it too but it always seems to me that people get their best work out of 3D models they make themselves. Your talents as 2D artist might allow you to crack out some really nice ones in time, as most animation/art studios that work with 3D tend to do, but it can still be a pretty risky venture. Good luck in the endeavor, though!
