12 hour days & 6 day work weeks are also normal in most full time office and a lot of blue collar jobs. Taking 2 weeks of vacation all together can mean there's someone else at your desk with your job when you come back. And you're expected to put on a mask and work sick. I literally had a boss tell me I needed to come in even though I had a fever and a hacking cough - I was an English teacher.
Many a weeb's anime paradise fantasies have been shattered and their spirits broken by Japan's work culture, I can tell you. Expat message boards are full of deeply bitter and cynical people.

OH MAN that sounds horrible! That kind of work culture sounds like torture! If I had a boss that yelled at me like that we'd have some serious issues ha. Shout outs to microsoft for keeping their section in the stores alive ha, hopefully they will invest in more japanese developed exclusives like Ninja Gaiden 4!

I think the thing with directness in Japan is that it's heavily mediated by social status. Because pretty brutal bullying is the norm in schools growing up, and (some) bosses have a really...pugilistic attitude toward their employees. Like, they'll straight up shout at people in front of others & shame them. It's like as soon as some people get high enough on the ladder it all comes out on their juniors.
So that might have been part of why your bounty wasn't well received, you were in the position where you should have been showing respect to the record-holder. But honestly, as foreigners go you sound fine. The 'ugly American' stereotype is very much alive & well over there, but it's really Europeans (particularly French) who I've seen emitting the most radioactive levels of dickishness. Just straight looking down on the whole country as not good enough for them. Some of the less appropriate Aussies too. To say nothing of some Chinese tourists. In your case it's clear you're not setting out to offend anyone.
As for the Xbox...nobody but the most hardcore gamers, Amerophiles and foreign English teachers own one, but Microsoft does spend a lot of money to keep it visible. If you walk into the games section of a Japanese equivalent to Best Buy you'll see an Xbox section which is far larger than it has any reason to be. It sure isn't because of sales volume, it's MS paying for floor space to plant a flag showing gamers they're still there.
