That's a great topic! I'm working on a topic video for that right now!

I'd like to know more about the scoring aspect and ways for new shmup players, like myself, can get into understanding scoring, where to post, how to record, etc. I am sure you have some vids explaining but I have not gotten to those yet.

Sky_Katchr_Gaming

I had no idea you were into Mariah, I do love Idaho though

These are some great ideas! Oh that would be a really cool video where I compare the player experience of some AAA game to the player experience in a shmup or arcade style game, that could be a great hook too! Man, I really need to make a video like this happen. Maybe I'll do this for something like Cyberpunk and contrast it with Esprade or something (since they are both cyberpunk aestetic). My dude that's a really cool idea! Remind me about this so I don't forget ha, I'm putting it on my vids to do list.

Thanks for tuning in! Can't go wrong with a little "Fantasy" ha. I'm glad to hear you appreciate my personal touches and the places where I expand outside the genre from time to time. There's a certain vibe that I want to create where even if I do look at a game or even non-game on my channel (there will be a vid like this soon ha), the audience can still connect with what I am doing because there is a foundation that I have built up. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed my little talk about how important the patrons are to me, that really is something I try my best to communicate because the patreon and having fans that support the channel are the lifeblood of what I do and it does bring me pride to pay off my powerbill with my patreon money ha. And yes, I am going to try really hard this year to improve my sleeping habits!

I actually think that's completely legit to do! There's a fine line between being too elitist where we don't listen to anyone who is not a super player (which was a bit of a thing two years ago), but at the same time, I think skill in the genre and a healthy library of clears can really only accumulate from a ton of time investment and passion, which doesn't happen overnight. So I do think that is a very valid way to sort of check a person's credentials and I'd be lying if I said I didn't do the same thing. And it can be a fun surprise where a new superplayer just appears out of nowhere, like Daringspino, Moglar, or Kiwi. :-D

I believe that you might make a good opportunity to do a compare and contrast with a popular game on the mainstream versus a more niche game that refines from the mainstream, such as some hardcore platformer that ups the ante that Super Mario Bros games cannot do, or some super dynamic beat em up that TMNT / Double Dragon / Battle Toads cannot even reach. That might be a good way to mix up some mainstream content with your niche. I can sense that you want Electric Underground to represent niche arcade-style video games that go beyond shmups. I remember your AAA vs Indie game video and your obsession on wanting to review Fight n Rage as it aims to be the game that covers the more technical aspects towards beat-em-up mastery. I welcome more types of those videos. Who knows, maybe cover more of smash bros but accompany them with a another multi-player fighter that does something far different.

Happy New(ish) year Mark – been looking forward to a new 7DE episode for a while and this didn't disappoint! Opening up with Mariah was a fun surprise, and like TRM said I appreciate your 1st date anecdote. What I've observed in your work thus far is a real desire to spread your wings and explore other areas aside from shmups, which as a viewer of yours has paid off. I'm thinking of your Eva / Ninja Scroll / Star Wars vids. But I've also appreciated you mentioning painters and musicians you like, or the anecdote of you confronting the creepy guy at the pool. You're absolutely right to avoid topics like politics, coronavirus, and the like. Social media is a ticking time bomb that's always going off, and people unfortunately don't lead with good faith anymore. I also really appreciate your including other game genres you like, such as character action games, run & gun, retro, etc. I see what you mean with top 10 videos, but honestly given your place in the community I believe it's worth doing them. Feel free to create a top X video of shmups for PS4, since I finally got one. : ) Finally, it's really nice to hear that our Patronage here really makes a difference. That was really validating for me to hear, and for you to get into the nitty-gritty in terms of being able to pay rent with youtube, etc. It's very informative for viewers to get a peek behind the curtain in terms of how YT operates and how we can best support you and other creators we like. Finally – dude, you have got to get more sleep!!!! I used to skate by on 6 hours a night, and try to catch up over the weekend. But at a certain age (I'm 35) you'll likely hit a wall. And not to be doom-monger, but there's lots of health risks that come with sleep deprivation. Sleep hygiene is hard to fix, but in the mean time consider the 10-20 min power nap while at work to smooth the edges as you sort that out. Cheers!

It think adding personal touches really keeps things interesting and adds some relatability to your videos which is one of the problems shmups has as far as outreach. Just because someone can 2-ALL a cave game doesn't mean they are an unapproachable machine. I also totally get your need to improve as a player to set yourself apart from the "Big Brand" youtubers. I know it's wrong of me but when I see someone talking about shmups I will check to see what kind of clears they have, or if they have a lot of time in them. This is probably gatekeeping of the highest order but I feel like more than most other genres you really have to spend a lot of times with shmups to really get them. Maybe this mindset that you have to do the time to be "authentic" is a bad one though, I really don't know.

Chinopolis

I'm glad to hear it :-) Yeah I think amusing little asides like that can work, just to add a touch more personality to things :-)

The Electric Underground

I’m gonna go on record and say I loved the Mariah first date story and you should not hold back on adding in a little bit of personal funny story anecdotes in the mix of the hardcore shmupage. Most people probably couldn’t pull that off but you 100% can and should. YouTube is gonna push you to obsess over growth and numbers, but don't lose sight of the fact that quality and sincerity is everything. Do what feels true to yourself and you know is the right thing to do in your heart and there is no doubt - good things will come. Cheers!

TRM

Yeah it's a very fine balance with mixing personality with professionalism, like the salt in the cream of wheat example :-) I think a little dash of personality is healthy, but not too much to where it becomes self absorbed (which can be hard at times ha). I think new approach of mixing my usual hardcore content with more niche content will be a great direction to try in 2021. I'm glad to hear my content has helped you get into the genre, that is the goal of the channel, to grow the health of the genre while putting out fun vibes :-)

The Electric Underground

Maybe covering other arcade genres will help you to increase your audience. Beat em ups, fighting games, etc. Still focusing on shmups, but use them as a bait. Making your videos too personal could backfire, you have to careful with that. I think what you need to ask yourself is what is your focus and end goal. The day has a limited amount of hours and we cannot do everything we wanna do. As you said, sleeping 5hs a day is not healthy. Do you wanna become a superplayer? Playing around 20hs a week is a part-time job just playing games. If that’s what you wanna do, go for it, but those are hours that you could had used in improving your youtube channel, getting a bigger audience and possibly making a living out of being a youtuber. I like the content you produce, and finding your channel brought me back to play shmups again, but maybe the content is targeted to people that are already in the genre or played shmups before. Get those top 10 videos for every console/platform/genre, nobody will blame you for doing that. You are already doing so much for the community, shmup slam is awesome.
