7th Day Electric EP 8, Psikyocast!

Psikyo made another horizontal shmup, Sol Divide. But it's their worst game, so I don't fault you for leaving it out 😉

Josh Dieckmann

Yeah that could be! There is something going on there for sure.

I wonder if it might have to do with that the Saturn was designed with 2D sprite games in mind while the Dreamcast had 3D polygons in mind.

Oh that's awesome! Now I want to try out the saturn version! Yes, Saturn always seems to have solid 3 frames of lag, all the games I test come back at that ha. Dreamcast is much more sus it seems when it comes to lag.

You got me curious so I tried out the Sengoku Blade on the Switch, Shmup Arch 6, and original Saturn hardware on a CRT. I'm not a lag expert but I could tell the Switch was the worst and Shmup Arch was the best. The Saturn version is in the middle. Noticeable but playable. You can also unlock Marion from Gunbird in the Saturn version. You have to beat the game (very easy mode works) with every other character first.

Consider me hyped for Shmup Slam. I'm not playing but I'll bring the hype like Flavor Flav for Public Enemy or Joe C. for Kid Rock.

I'm glad to hear it!!! Ha that's really cool you had an Aero Fighters machine, Dragon Blaze is really awesome! Yeah ha, these various themes of the Psikyo games are pretty wild, Sol Divide is a pretty nifty game, just needed a little more adjustment to be a solid game.

Re-release idea sounds awesome, there were a lot of great discussions in the older episodes! Even just seeing good clear HD footage of various games being talked about is a cool bonus to the audio Personally I like Psikyo, their games have a pretty wide variety of themes (Psychic powers? Dragons? Ancient samurai?) and it feels like they put a lot of love & polish into their games and try to squeeze a lot out of their themes even if they’re simpler than other shmups. I lean more towards oldschool fast bullets over bullet hell and Psikyo scratches that itch for me Dragon Blaze was one of the games that drew me back into shmups because it looked like a more polished action packed version of Dragon Spirit on the PCEngine (a childhood fav). But then it’s also got launching the dragon to attack & collect and lots of polished animations and all the interface & story art looks like classic Capcom quality visuals I remember we had Aero Fighters at a convenience store my friends and I used to hang out in as teens and I didn’t even realize till getting back into things that it was a Psikyo game we had been playing all those afternoons of skipping school to go get slurpees and hope none of our parents drove past lol
