Always a great topic to talk about. if you play shmups you’ve been there before. I myself just got out of a slump and a much needed break. For me just banging your head against a wall and feeling like you’re making no progress is crushing after finding such enjoyment in a specific game. Its essential to know when to take a breather. In my opinion I feel like the length of the break doesn’t really matter, whether a month or a year. When you drill the routing required for these games into your memory its not easily forgotten. might take a minute to remember but it always comes back. The important thing is that you’re ready to come back and are having fun again. Was a very nice surprise to see new podcast episodes after being gone for so long. Thank you hope they keep coming

To answer your question, I mainly play shmups for fun. I'll never be a super player in any one particular game, I don't think. I have a health issue that leaves me very fatigued at times and I really can't play shmups well during those times. Shmups require a good amount of alertness and concentration which will always be a barrier for some people. But when I feel well, I really enjoy challenging myself with either 1CC'ing or getting a personal best score. I do really admire the shmup community's effort to post legitimate scores. I'm able to compare my scores to the leaderboards as a gauge to how well I'm doing relativity. There's something about shmups though that's embedded in my DNA and why I like them so much compared to other genres and why I keep playing them. Probably has to do with the first games I ever played were single screen shmups like Space Invaders on the Atari 2600 when I was 4 or 5 years old. Also, I think I have a pretty good reaction time and hand eye coordination so shmups allow me to exercise it. I just hope I don't get too old and slow to enjoy them now that I've reached my 40's. Mark, maybe there's a topic to discuss sometime. Getting older or losing some physical ability that decreases your ability to play shmups at a high level or at least the fear of that happening.
