Pill Pod 201 - German Idealism & Schelling's Freedom (ft. Christopher Satoor)

So, after decrying philosophy in Episode 200, we are back on it hard again in 201. The Pill Pod interviews Christopher Satoor on Schelling and his conception of freedom from "the freedom essay", also known as THE PHILOSOPHICAL INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE ESSENCE OF HUMAN FREEDOM (link).

Chris also does a bunch of interview and video content on YouTube, at https://www.youtube.com/@TheYoungIdealist

Loved this episode. “The reason Milton wrote in fetters when he wrote of Angels & God, and at liberty when of Devils & Hell, is because he was a true Poet and of the Devil's party without knowing it." - William Blake

To me, listening to Chris on Schelling resembles pschoanalysing the universe, particularly its death drive. Throw in some Pierce & Lacan imaginary/sign exchange and I'm starting to feel very Spinozan.

I think the schelling choice was a really good one in the general pod arc. Freedom as Pills has pointed out is a floating signifier… and an important signifier to track for any deeper analysis of the material and ideological happenings of now. The bait that seems to motivate us all: “freedom”—- whether economic freedom or personal freedom is at the center of the dominant phantasms. Of course it is hard to compete w Pills ability to speak more colloquially and less academically without compromising depth of understanding and also to bring clarifying analogies and examples to the discussion, but I am def diving into Schelling’s essay. So give da boyz a break.

Damn I remember Chris from like Pillpod 3, his voice really rolled back the years a bit. Hope Pills’ problems are sorted soon, his absence is palpable!

Is Schelling's VR set out? 🙏

I love you all!

Love that the wave and water analogy Chris uses at 45:00 is straight up a favorite used by Thich Nhat Hahn as well to explain Buddhist mind vs store consciousness as well as interbeing, non-self (which the discussion about the distinction between acting on behalf of a narrow self or the greater organism also rings a Buddhist bell). I've always liked when Schelling came up on the PillPod, this ep continues that trend, I guess it's time to crack his stuff open.

Schelling agrees, all my enemies are ontologically evil.

Apologies for my ignorance. Hey pills, it's not the same. Come, and take it back. Eric and victor suck at it 😋. When it boils down to faith, the body becomes the totem, a site of resurrection.

Oh thank God you're back. Things are getting too crazy here in the US and I actually listened to the Joe Rogan podcast today. Haaaalllp.
