Pill Pod 197 - Never were we freer than under occupation... (exclusive)

Here we are yapping about the facticity of freedom and just a dip into existentialism. If freedom is the totem spirit of the age, we thought we should devote some mental energy to discovering its outlines.

Sounds like the worst kind of therapy

Alyn

Yeah I figured, and it makes sense given how even modern existential therapy falls under the humanistic paradigm. But I feel like this view all too easily conforms to (neo)liberal ideology, because it’s like “yeah climate change is gonna kill us but you can choose to see life as being even more precious than you would have if you know you have a good chance of retiring at 60” and this promotes accepting the political status quo and being content with just changing your perspective.

He did write "existentialism is a humanism" so he wouldn't take it as a criticism

Anyone else feel this is too humanistic and non deterministic for their tastes? I feel like Sartre ignores a lot of psychoanalytic principles with all this emphasis on choice.

People don’t want freedom, there’s too much responsibility involved

1:05:00 I'm pretty sure it was in Revolutionary Suicide that Fred Hampton recounts how he was free, essentially experienced satori while in solitary confinement. Thich Nhat Hanh speaks pretty eloquently on freedom.

Robert Solomon’s summary: You’re responsible for what you make of what’s been made of you.

Why do we value "freedom" so much?

Have ya’ll ever read “ Practical Necessity” by Bernard Williams? I think it actually is a nice counter balance and is a little bit more livable…

The ending 😂
