I begged for methadone or suboxone when I first detoxed in jail. Apparently they don't do that in Montana unless you are already being treated outside of the jail from an actual licensed provider. They wouldn't even give me medicine for stomach acid, nausea and diarrhea. They also wouldn't give me ibuprofen or tylenol. Everything had to be "purchased" through commissary which of course I didn't have money for. That was the WORST experience of my life but thankfully I got sober after that. Been sober for almost 7 years now.

Oof. As a recovering addict with one year clean, I can't tell you how much withdrawal sucks. To this day, I would literally rather go to jail for a month than suffer one day of withdrawal. It's agonizing, and even before it starts, you do everything and anything in your power to stop it from happening. So it's not surprising to me that the police use it to their advantage when trying to get information. It's just sad because she asked for an attorney, and if her brain's survival instinct hadn't been hijacked by heroin, she would have been able to speak to an attorney and receive MAT. There's something offputting about police officers insisting they inform you of your rights just to take advantage of the fact that you're not aware of your other civil liberties.

It doesn't sound like he held a gun to your head and made you sell drugs. You even went above and beyond when you took his clientele. You saw what appeared to be an easy way to make a lot of money and you took it. Maybe if you were an adult and took responsibility for things you wouldn't be in jail.

yes, the detectives could have played a more sympathetic role to get more out of him but the result wouldn't change. Either way, it's a life sentence but the scolding he got from the detective will stay with him for his life. "she was an angel, her family's prize, that lays dead coved in your semen." those are powerful words that he needed to hear.

He started by immediately confessing to murdering her with a rock and that is basically all they ended up with. If anything, they inhibited him from incriminating himself further.

Yes. Nearly all of the content here was on YT at some point. Most of it was fully deleted... and I have a theory about the whole situation. It’s my opinion that the JCS team was FORCED to pull a good bit of the content because of YT community reports/flags. If true, they stood to lose not only their platform, but the income stream of potential new viewers. At that point, making the decision to pull some of other content was a way to make the Patreon more appealing. There are many of these videos that are STILL on YT, but unlisted. Those videos were probably a means of just making sure that the Patreon channel could survive. I feel pretty confident about this ... because the videos they left on YouTube, but categorised as “unlisted” were some of their more popular videos, but those videos aren’t featuring “graphically violent and disturbing content” that YouTube would force JCS to completely delete. I don’t know any of this to be the truth. It’s just my opinion and guess. I’ve followed the JCS content from their second video... I watched them create a second channel that included some of their existing content... and watched that content get flagged and disappear from the new channel. I saw the content on their primary channel continuously slow down and the videos start to disappear one and two at a time. I watched other content be marked as with the content warnings ... and later the (very) swift move to Patreon. Again, all opinion. But considering the level of the content and graphical nature of many of the videos being penalised and deleted by YouTube is probably what forced them to make the moves that they did. The content JCsS delivers is very time consuming and can be expensive to generate. YouTube penalising their work would easily cripple and fracture a small team that can only afford to do this part time with the motivation of a little compensation or hope for growth.

I'm just confused by the investigators... their strategy was a bit abrasive and they clearly couldn't hide their anger and disgust towards the situation. If the suspect wasn't so willing to confess his crimes they would've had a much harder time getting the information that they extracted.

I don't think socio-economic status matters when you are a murderer. You can try to chop it 40 ways to figure out why but you won't get an answer that is satisfying. Those impulses and feelings transcend how "stable" he looked on paper. IMO Though I will say, there are plenty of other videos on this dude on YT that may give you what you're looking for.

This one is so weird to me. He had a stable job and was married. Why did he do it? Why did he confess to his wife? Why did he go on a crime spree? There wasn't any information given on his history or what might have set him off. Super perplexing.

The detective who brought up "Having god in your heart" just made me cringe. Believing in a fictional deity doesn't make you a good person automatically. Most religious people aren't good people whatsoever. I understand he's using a tactic to elevate the suspect and put him in a state of comfort, but something tells me he really believes that. We need to stop treating religion like it's a free pass to morality. It isn't. No matter how religious you are, or what faith you fall in line with, that won't change how shitty of a person you are. Ever. All religion is evil at its core and no faith is worth your time. This kind of thinking is why we need religion LEGALLY SEPARATED from all governmental and official matters. Belief and faith shouldn't have anything to do with governing or the law.

Yeah I really don't think they are pros at serious interrogation this was probably the most serious interrogation they have done in their careers, and I think they did the best they could with what they had and their experience. If they were experienced interrogaters they for sure would have handled this better or differently. I dont really think they are to blame tho this for sure would have put this department on the spot and this was probably the best they had at the time.

Am I the only one to consider that the approach investigators took was at least « interesting »? I’m not sure the usual « Don’t worry, that’s just a rape and who would blame you she was so beautiful and you had to shut her up » would have worked better than what they tried here which was I think maybe the only way to extract a full confession.

he's definitely not an actual "psychopath". He is very impulsive, not calculated, and has a semblance of empathy. He has quite a unique brain pathology actually. you can see how in his wife's interview, she says that he was freaking out after finding out that the girl he murdered was on the news showing that he was not prepared to deal with the consequences of his actions, and from that point on he slowly starts to suffer from recidivism (kidnapping another girl with the possible intention of raping her, shooting a man for his car, and stealing a families car to flee the scene).

I have worked in emergency services, and while I cant say for sure, I think the dispatcher was trying to keep a even keel in order to get help quickly. The almost compassionate nature to that dirtbag was likely a ruse to get his cooperation - he has already killed and has kidnapped another individual and likely they didn't want to tip him into doing something to harm her.

I felt the dispatcher that spoke to Aundreah was not very compassionate. She was compassionate to the killer, but when Aundreah was on the phone she was very short and her tone was empty of emotion; did not express concern at all. "Do you need medical? Ok. Hand the phone back." I didn't like that.

There seems to be a new trend with Detectives (just some) caring too much about how they are going to be seen when the interrogation makes it on YouTube or even more, a sensational trial broadcast on T.V. The detective who's only seen by his hands turned into a Christian Warrior. I expected him to touch the criminal on the forehead, call him son and proclaim he has been healed. Things like this really seemed to escalate after the Jodi Arias trial.

It's like he knew to drive to where the worst detectives were.

Seems like he was pleading for forgiveness from God, if not because he actually felt guilty, to appear remorseful as a way to garner sympathy from the jury/Judge and avoid the death penalty.

Over here in Europe i cant picture a police officer going down that route of bringing in someones god or religion into matters (i may may be wrong but its pretty unimaginable to me). It's basically the right to have communication with a legal team from your home country when you commit a crime abroad, as far as I understand? I'm from the UK too - I don't think it's particularly an American thing, pretty sure it applies here too. But I'm no expert so maybe I've got things wrong, but that's what I understand it to mean.

After watching so many of these interrogation videos, and with my own experiences of connecting and talking with people, these detectives seem way off course with their approach. It seems they can't control their personal feelings towards the guy. He seems very ashamed about basic sexual urges, which probably goes hand in hand with his deeply religious beliefs, and he simply couldn't own up to having raped the girl, that seems so obvious and I would have started trying to diminish that shame, try and get him to feel he can be honest about how he felt and how one thing led to another. I may be naive but I think that interrogation could have been much better. This is such a sad sad story.

Very well done, and thought provoking. With that said, if you think he should spend the rest of his life in prison, instead of death, why? We can make the same appeal towards mitigation for a life sentence. The fact of the matter is, if you believe he isn't culpable due to mental defect, he should not be in prison. It's clear that guy was culpable, in my mind, it's only a question of whether his crime was heinous enough to illicit the death sentence, and I believe it was. I have PTSD, and two anxiety disorders, and was in the Army (PTSD did not come from the Army), so I am empathetic to the dudes plight, but ultimately he made a decision to shoot multiple times.

It’s very pleasant to have these videos as a nice treat. But you don’t eat cake everyday, or you lose appreciation for its taste. We are so used to binge watching on a constant basis that we have forgotten the joy of catching a favorite TV program or special. Oh and it’s only one fucking dollar, for a program of far higher quality that most true crime TV and documentaries. Yes he’s making bank but shouldn’t he be after all his hard work? And if you think it’s easy to create these videos in a months time I’d simply say you try to do it and see how you fare. Man what a dream to make $35000+ in one month and not release anything

I gonna throw myself in here because I can't fall asleep and have nothing else to do. If you complain about his schedule, as far that I can tell, there is none listed, so going in to pay 1$ a month is optional and carry the risk of not getting a video. Considering the quality of the videoes posted and the work behind them (research, compiling, recording, editing and probably something more I didn't think of) it's ridiculously cheep. He could easily make it #$ pr video instead, and we risk loosing to quantity > quality. Right now there is even more reasons for slow upload, half the world is on stand by, just because he creates videoes don't nesse cary makes life easier (as he pointed out) If you are dissatisfied, stop the subscription, wait a few months and then resub. Personally, I think this is ridiculously low already and will unsub from Netflix/HBO before Jim since I listen to these at least 3 times a week when I can't fall asleep (personal favorite: Lazarus)

Jim, I love you, but I have to say this: when I became a Patron you had under 10k Patrons- now you have over 35k. My problem is now you are posting less frequently than before. I want to support you but only posting once or twice a month I fell isn’t enough. I feel like if you are pulling in over 400k a year off patreon, an income stream that you didn’t have before, you should be posting more frequently, not less. I know it’s only $1, but a lot of content creators don’t ask for anything, and they post on a daily or weekly basis. I think for 400k a year in Patreon support you should be posting weekly. I don't know that it is one person that is producing the content of these videos. The narrator is separate and I suspect that to edit the videos and audio is a multi-person undertaking. Then you throw in the expertise and research that each case requires to get such an informed analysis and I think we have a team of people, probably with day jobs, producing some of the best content to be found. I love JCS videos and want more everyday but I want them at the quality that they have so far been produced at.

Has anyone else here followed JCS from 2017? This channel is made up of like 10 people, at least two are police and the rest are military. Check out the end of the Jussie Smollette video to see some of them. The voice is a random voice over actor.

Everyone at this point should expect a new video during the last days of each month. It has trended that way for awhile. I’m not defending it, it just seems to be the way it is. If you don’t like it cancel your subscription, if you don’t care then keep it. I honestly don’t think he cares. He makes the video and puts it out. I think we would all like more content and/or more communication. It just doesn’t seem like either are going to happen.

The case of Scott Nelson who murdered the Florida nanny and blamed it on his parole officer is a great example, he cites every excuse possible to claim his own victimhood while refusing to acknowledge his own victim's fate. Even apart from his case there are so many criminals who cannot accept any fault and blame everyone else for the way their lives turned out.... should be a very interesting psychological topic if it can be made head or tails of.

i actually met this guy. My husband had police training at the COCC in Bend OR. We stopped and talked to this security guard asking him where we should park i relation to where the training and tests were, he was very nice to us. Fast forward about 1/2 hour I was just going to sit in the car while my husband took a series of tests. This was in the summer so I decided to walk around the deserted campus and play pokemon GO. I got a bad feeling walking around alone like someone was stalking me. I ended up just dashing back to the car and driving into Bend and shopped and waited until my husband was done. My best friend who lives in Bend called me weeks later and told me about this guy and i connected the dots realizing we had met him!!! Still gives me chills to this day.

I listened to a podcast on this case and sadly, the motive was he wanted to know what it felt like. Also, the woman held hostage didn't have an STD but pretended to in order to keep herself safe. Very quick thinking. Lastly, the wife wasn't as forthcoming as some think. She failed to mention he had family in the area. If LE would have known that, they might have been able to apprehend him before he took a hostage. He took a family car if I believe before switching up with the woman.

I think it has nothing to do with success, it's more a problem of a limited source of material, and the time it takes to make the videos actually top quality. If they were to pump out one video a week they would become worst and worst and eventually they would run out of interesting material. I personally am fully satisfied with the amount of videos they are putting out because they put their time into each one of them.

I feel so sorry for the poor boyfriend man. They had a pretty standard couple's fight and she left to go to her friends. He was a good enough man to accept that she was upset and look for her to give her a ride so she wouldn't have to walk. Goes to show how much he loved her, looking out for her even after a fight and understood that she didn't want to be around him that night but would rather give her a ride to her friends where she'd be safe and sound and the last thing she said to him was "I'm sorry I wasn't good enough for you" and then she was gone forever. He'd never be able to see her again or make things right. I can't imagine the guilt that must haunt him every day of his life along with the grief of having lost the woman he loved.

I don't think for one second that he has an urge to kill. He has an urge to rape, and killing the victim is the only way to get away with it. It's undoubtedly the reason he forced the other girl into a hotel & to take sleeping pills.

These interrogators suck. They failed to convince me that his first confession, that he accidentally hit her and then panicked and killed her, was false. And what was with the cut part? And I can imagine the later holes in his story, about taking her purse when he already had her phone and such, were because he was making up as he went along, trying to tell the cops what they wanted to hear since they didn't believe him. Dude's clearly sick, but none of the evidence in this video convinced me that it was anything more sinister than a car accident that spiraled out of control.

The cut out footage could have been him talking about his cousin Vin helping him cover up the crime. The grandfather said in court that the defendant willingly admitted that he strangled, raped, sodomized and beat her with a rock. This interrogation footage/confession wasn't used in court, but thrown out because of some technicalities. Something about him not getting 3 phone calls within the first 3 hours of being held. So the the plea bargain was admission of guilt, but no death sentence. He said hes always battled with the urge to kill and the only thing keeping it at bay was his wife. Seems he tried to live a normal life, but this night it was the right scenario for him. He seems ashamed for what he is. A predator. Looks to me he tried to downplay and lie to the investigators to seem like he was less of a monster.

There was just something distictly off about his behaviour during all of this. He apparently cold bloodedly rapes and kills a girl on a whim, tells his wife about it (kind of), then leaves, just to kidnap another girl but doesn't harm her physically. Instead he has a change of heart and calls the cops on himself while driving with said girl in the car, during the call he behaves very strangely, not in the least remorseful as you would think when you're turning yourself in but just concerened about his own well being. He's completely self serving, why then turn yourself in? During the interogation he tries to wriggle out of any resposibility but also not really, being strangely calm the whole time. The praying for forgiveness and for the family at the end instead of adddressing the family directly is very odd and feels completely self agrandising, too. Maybe there's just a very broken moral/religious compass somewhere in the depths of his psyche that expresses itself starngely but all he does feels very odd and disjointed.

Loved this video (as usual), but i also kinda feel like there was no closure. Like, i dont feel like Mr Lara fits any real sterotypes of a killer/rapist and still, after having watched the video, i dont understand his motivation. He went to jail and all, which is a fitting ending for him, but he never really explains why he wanted to commit this crime and the officers never really enqurie as to why either. They focused too much on projecting their own story on to him as to get a killer confession. However, not only did he kill a woman, but he also kidnapped another, highjacked a at least two cars and, i beleve, shot someone? What made a "normal" guy flip out and do all that crazy shit? And then he is being, not fully, but kinda honest about it all. He did call the police on himself and was being fairly cooperative, not putting up too much of a struggle during interrigation. I may be very wrong but everything from commiting the crimes to getting caught feels kind pre planed in a way, like an attention stunt. Obviously he is not innocent of these crimes, but i also feel like it would be interesting to know how he came to that point in his life. :)

One of the most interesting parts (or lack of parts) for me in these videos is the bits they cut out. Especially as it is often followed by a swift change of narration by the suspect. JCS, do you have any insight on what kind of tactics are being deployed during those edited out sections? I imagine it's a bit too "harsh" for the public to see their police officers deploy what I imagine are very brutal tactics, but it seems very effective. Just to note I'm not implying it's physical in any way but I'm super curious for any insight.

See young college girls on a daily basis to a sexual deviant can only last so long before they act out. Those fantasies felt like they fell all into place when he happened upon the victim. Killing her was a mere act of trying to get away with it. When you are an opportunistic murderer it is sloppy. The risk of being caught is high. Covering your tracks as much as possible is key. That is why the mental breakdown with his wife and the kidnapping of another girl (which would have been another rape but not a murder if she had not told him he had a STD) was his downfall per say. Make it sound more like it would be better for him to pull over. You could tell Edwin had the intention of surrendering but was super concerned for his safety. how do they not have a map of his city already printed out? takes two seconds to do on any computer. Detectives need to step up procedures that speed up the process. also presenting a map and a pen to a suspect and leaving the room, they will often ghost trace the whereabouts

Watching this and hearing how the kidnapped girl told Edwin she had an std before passing out got me thinking. First off- that was brilliant quick thinking on her part. She is a very street smart girl. What I was thinking is women should carry around fake prescription bottles for medication to treat HIV in their purse. So if the absolute worst thing happens and a woman is kidnapped and about to be raped she can tell the guy she is HIV positive and tell him he can look in her purse if he doesn’t believe her. The fake prescription bottles could be completely real and have the label just like the real bottle. Maybe this could be done with the approval and oversight of law enforcement (to a very limited degree. Wouldn’t want too many people to know. Just enough so she wouldn’t get in trouble for having the fake pills)and a real doctor. Just a thought. Edit: The people commenting saying maybe men should just not rape- I could try explaining this in one syllable words for you so you can understand but let me try again a little slower for you. Ok- now stay with me here- I said if a woman got in the absolute worst case scenario. These scenarios happen all the time . There are sick men out there that don’t give a shit about you little speech. They will rape and kill you without a second thought. So instead of trying to prepare and do something to save yourself from a horrific ordeal you guys would just say “hey mr rapist with gun. I know you just raped and killed someone...but how about you... no wait for it... not rape me.” Good luck with that. One of the more bizarre accounts of sexually motivated murder on the surface. Meaning, I didn’t initially get the impression that Lara was your typical sexually driven, opportunistic killer because in having a job as a security guard, being sober at the time, and apparently not having an escalating record of antisocial conduct would mean that this act had a very random component to it. Then, during the interrogation, the police mention some previous attempted carjackings the subject admitted to. Which leads me to believe that this was the end result of escalating behaviors. Perhaps, in a split second, Lara impulsively acts on his desire to rape a woman in this situation because it was just far too convenient to pass up. He’d had ideations and practice runs up to this point, and now things had unfolded in such a way that the circumstances necessitated he execute at the nadir of his spiral. The abduction, and subsequent attempt to sexually assault was his last “Hail Mary” (forgive the expression) to complete a fantasy. Normally, a hostage type situation is the result of a subject’s coping mechanisms being wholly overwhelmed by unresolved emotions. Lara did not display the kind of emotional distress correlated with a breakdown. It was calculated, and only fell apart due to the quick thinking of the woman he chose. It destroyed the fantasy for him, and he then acknowledged the futility of his last ditch effort. Lara will probably always have some adept excuse shirking total responsibility for his depraved and murderous nature. To stare fully into the abyss would be to accept his nature, and prevent him from the enjoyment he derives from the fantasy and power.

You can definitely tell the detectives took it super personally and felt angry about the crime, which is completely understandable (of course,) but you’ve shown just how big of a difference that interrogation can make in a court room. Analysis is fantastic as always.
