@Heather U-K I don't know about other cases, but I can explain this one. He was arrested and nobody denied his guilt. Even he admitted to the crimes. His defense argued that he was unfit to stand trial due to reasons of insanity. If true, his incarceration would be carried out in a mental hospital rather than prison. The next 8 years were spent trying to evaluate him, with defense appointed psychologists ruling him insane and prosecution appointed psychologists declaring the opposite. So it was actually his defense postponing the trial, in the hopes that it would never happen at all, and they got what they wanted for 5 of those 8 years. The case was eventually taken to federal court, where after more psychological evaluations he was finally declared fit to stand for trial. He was then found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. Because he was given a life sentence, the 8 years already incarcerated did not make a difference. However in other cases, time served awaiting trial is counted as part of your sentence. For example, if he had been given a sentence of 30 years instead of life, he would only have to serve 22 more years.

For the Brian David Mitchell case, it said that he waited (I assume in prison/jail) for 8 YEARS before even going to trial. Can anyone familiar with the legal system, can they explain how that is even legal? I mean, if someone isn't yet found guilty and punished with a sentence (innocent until proven guilty and all that in a court of law), then wouldn't 8 years waiting for that trial be illegal? And then, once in trial and sentenced, are those 8 years counted towards the sentence, or are those 8 years on top of the then given sentence? I've seen this a lot in these videos, 2 years, 9 months, etc, and I think 8 years has been the longest. Any clarity on this would be awesome, thanks!!

the whole situation was hell. Biannela, the mother, gave birth to her first child (Cristian, the 12 year old murderer) when she herself was 12 years old... the boy's father was 20 yeas old. Biannela's mom, Cristian's grandma, was a drug addict. society failed this family. when Cristian says he lashed out violently at his baby brother because he felt angry over "what his stepdad did", i can't help but wonder if there was sexual abuse involved. i feel there's probably more to it than just the slap on the head that JCS mentions. // yup, just checked: the stepdad was physically and sexually abusive towards Cristian, and he killed himself by shooting himself in the head in front of Cristian to avoid being arrested for the abuse, just a few months before Cristian killed his baby brother. I feel the video would have benefitted from that context

Regarding the Becky Watts case, she went to my school and although I never spoke to her, lots of my friends knew her. It's crazy seeing the entire police investigation, as I remember the search parties and facebook posts at the time and not believing for one second that she could be dead. I think it was a few weeks after she went missing that it came into the news about her step-brother, and how he had cut up her body into pieces and stuffed it into a shed. It still haunts me now.

That's a big part of what makes Switzerland so different though. Everyone is educated about guns formally so they take safety seriously. Americans are really different in our handling of guns and you don't have to know jack shit to get one, even a particularly deadly one. I know a ton of Americans who will wave around loaded guns and point them at people. My dad never locked his gun cabinet and we totally could have played with them if we'd been dumb enough to (my brother's friends all were). Teenagers carry handguns around and what would have been a fist fight (normal adolescent aggression) turns into a shooting. I only know a dozen Swiss people through an ex, but like a third of them expressed shock/dismay to me about how Americans handle their guns. A policy that works for a country of a certain size and culture might not work for one with different circumstances.

I feel horrible for Na Truong. If she was 16 when her son was 13 months old, that means she probably got pregnant when she was around 14. I can understand the detective's skepticism because of her brother's death but sudden infant death syndrome is very much real. The detective is right about one thing: her childhood was stolen from her, between becoming a mother at 14/15, and spending the last years of her adolescence in jail.

We are now facing an issue with juvenile crimes (the murder of a firefighter and their captain in California due to an arson caused by two 13 year old boys) in Tulare County of Northern California. No idea what the motive was, if any, but interested in seeing how the state's laws will impact their punishment.

Masterful work by the female detective in "The Interrogation of George the 5th". She played it perfectly. Some of the best interrogation work I've seen. Up there with the likes of Jim Smyth (the detective who garnered a confession out of Col Russel Williams). You're spot on when you said the male detective disrupted that perfectly timed grand reveal of her death. If only the video was of a higher resolution...we would have almost certainly seen the look of anger and pure disdain on her face when she turned to him. He was absolutely useless that entire interrogation. He even seals his fate as the worst detective ever to sit in a an interrogation room by stating near the end "We're not here for any reason, George...". This made absolutely no sense. I'm assuming he meant to say "We're not all here for no reason, George", but I guess he doesn't really think too much before he talks.
