Office Hours Q&A 214 | Silent Acoustic Guitar?

New here? Wondering where to start? Click here for my Patreon start page, or here for my recommended lesson plan.

Hi Everyone,

You missed this one! Catch the next one every Thursday at 10AM Pacific Time

There was only one question this week and it was about silent guitar practice and wether that means electric guitar only.

Here's how it works: bring your questions to the comments below, the Office Hours community forum thread, or save them for the live chat! Questions can be about anything you want - guitar technique, music theory, gear, songwriting - your choice! Also, feel free to link a video of you playing if you have a technique question!

I'll do my best to answer your questions and give examples of how you develop skills related to your question.

Keep in mind, you can always watch later if you can't make it live! Check back a few hours after the stream for a numbered list of each question and a timestamped link to each answer.

*Please note: you may need a youtube/gmail account to ask questions in the live stream, but you can watch without one.

Office Hours Q&A 214 | Silent Acoustic Guitar?

Hey Weezley:-) Travel guitars, headphone amps, and like are the one area of gear I am really well acquainted with because I am a Flight attendant and I have had to know. Please feel free to reach out because I have some things to share that you might not think about until it’s too late. Also, if it all possible, I do suggest getting your baby used to sleeping with noise. I know this sounds crazy, but my dad was a professional drummer when I was little and I used to sleep on stage next to his drum set often. It’s amazing what kids can sleep through if they are acclimated to it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hi Scott, do you have any ideas for practicing _quietly_? My wife and I have just had our first baby and we are still adjusting to life as parents. We've made it through the first 6 weeks but I don't have time to play guitar like I used to. Of course the only time I can get is when the baby is sleeping. I only have an acoustic and almost always play without a pick because the pick is so loud. We are in a small house so quiet is the only option here. Is my only option to switch to electric and headphones? I can do some quiet fingerpicking but it's hard to find a consistent quiet strum. One heavy stroke and the baby is awake! What can you recommend?
