Hi Everyone,

Here are the questions from this week, timestamped in order:

Question 1: Ray asked about how to get into alternate tunings and if they fit with the CAGED System

Question 2: Harsh asked how to tell if you're getting better. how to tell if you need outside help, and how to get back into it after a break.

Question 3: David showed a specific fingerpicking technique and asked if it was ok or bad. I voted "bad" and gave suggestions, including methods of muting.

Question 4: Jeffrey asked if bass and ukulele are similar to guitar. We went over similarities and differences.

Question 5: Vicenco has problems playing with a pick. I gave some tips for how to hold the thing, and some exercises to practice getting comfortable with the mechanics.

Question 6: Mateus talked about a new music nerd ability to listen to music with an ear for whats going on instead of just absorbing how it feels. We talked about ways to deliberately hang out in either camp.

Question 7: Jeff had a question about bass muting. I gave some tips

I played classical guitar for 3 years and only using fingers. I stopped for few years and bought my electrical guitar wanting to get into some blues music. I got problems with my pick, because my right hand cant keep up with left. Any exercises or tips for my right hand? New here, have a awesome day coach

Hi Scot, so besides Base do play any other string instruments? I resently bought a ukulele. There some similarities - if you look at shapes. But in my head they are totally wrong. Is there any theory or crossover ideas behind these instruments?

So, I believe I have developed a bad habit when playing my melodies. I tend to use a single finger to pick them. My rhythm parts I typically use p-ima, but for melodies I've noticed I stick to my index. On acoustic, this was less of a problem for me, but with electric, it results in difficulties with string muting. I have a hard time muting when switching strings. I have also noticed strings ringing out when I change positions (like I am pressing too hard and it rings when I release [more acoustic carryover]). a) Can you confirm this a bad habit b) Any recommendations for breaking it c) Any recommendations on muting (I tend to use my pinky as an anchor and I know that may also need to change) Willing to use the online tool to show you just how poor my form is ;)

I am getting back into practice after three weeks of having to stop practicing due to personal issues, any mindset advice for the same to keep going ?

While learning a new concept for example, d shape in CAGED basics, I often hit a wall where I dont know if I am getting better or if I need help. How to identify if : - I am getting better , because sometimes you are on a right track but it could take days before you see results for a beginner like me. - I need help, there is no way to know whether I should be looking at myself and try to figure out my next move vs taking the wrong approach.

Hi Scott, I tend to stick with standard tuning. What would be your recommendation to experiment with a different tuning and would this cause confusion within the CAGED system? Thanks, Ray
