Strumming Patterns | 03: Playing to a Beat

Where to Start • Lesson Archive • Recommended Lesson PlanBook a Private Lesson

Hi Everyone,

In this lesson we take our previous strumming patterns and play them to a beat. From there we discover the difference between 8th note and 16th note strumming patterns and how to explore playing them over a variety of tempos.

Explore the 16th and 8th note play-along tracks while you practice strumming patterns. If you come up with a pattern you like or feel inspired to write a cool chord progression or something else, share it on the community forum post for this lesson!

Strumming Patterns | 03: Playing to a Beat

Ah yes exactly this has been my kryptonite for years already. I wil be spending many months on this page.

This was a fantastic lesson just for the background illustration and education about the drums--kick, snare, high hats! Scott, I like the way you share how you build the lessons.

One thing I do with my guitar to mute all the strings and just strum while binge-watching any Netflix show. It helps with consistent wrist movement and works up my dexterity, strength, and most importantly my stamina. I notice I would get really fatigued strumming for long periods, but now I can strum more comfortably. I can also hold my pick without it falling out of my fingers. I'm still working on strumming dynamics. This would be a cool topic to cover - strumming dynamics. I feel that my strumming is WAY TOO LOUD with a pick.

Peter Tran

160bpm kicked my butt.

Peter Tran

Yeah! I think this will be a great idea. I have difficulties on palm muting and making strumming more smoothly and dynamic.

Kevin_Z_Seattle

Nice that funk accent! Good practice!

Thanks for the awesome lesson. Saw a bunch of "you only need this one strumming pattern !" videos on YT, but never got the panoramic view. Would you consider talking more about palm muting and other ways to make strumming more dynamic in your next video?

Chris Zhang

Thanks Scott for this real good lesson on strumming. I did need to practice more strumming, and the way you did this lesson with all this drums and all theses patterns are really good to practice. Thks, i keep on learning a lot from your lessons!
