Song breakdown?

Hi everyone. Even if you don't want to be a songwriter, I think its incredibly important to be able to write something - a chord progression, a melody, a cool lead guitar part, an interesting rhythm part, etc.

I have an idea. Why don't I take some songs and break them down to their basic elements - chord progressions - guitar parts - bass lines - rhythms - drum parts - vocal melody - lyrics and discuss how they all fit together in music theory and composition terms and maybe go into a little on lyric writing as well. I probably won't do it unless enough people are interested, but I think it would be a pretty fun way to learn how music theory applies to actually making music.

This is a song I wrote, and I thought it might be fun to break this one down because I could also talk about the songwriting process - how weird it is and how everything comes together over time. AND the recording process - how I tracked everything and mixed it. This track in particular was one that I wrote, recorded and mixed entirely by myself, so I have access to every aspect of the process. I have a few more I'm working on and would love to include you in the process if that sounds interesting.

What do you think?

Good idea. Perhaps you could put jour tips in the lyrics!! That would be fun!

thea van Geleuken

it's a great idea

please please do

Scott, that was really cool. Eventually yes this would be great, maybe seeing the breakdown would help in making specific goals during my learning process.

Joe Fodor

I agree; sounds like fun.

Didier Garcia

Do it!

Brainjo

Yep, sounds like a great idea. Do it

Yes great idea. I purchased the PUSH 2 just to try and understand this very thing. We are on the same wave length here in the PNW.

The sooner the better!!!

Yea man.. a major goal of mine is to be able to breakdown a song and be able to jam along.. I have been learning songs for a long time and can regurgitate fairly well but anytime I am with musicians playing tunes I am not familiar with.. I just kinda sit there like a bump on the log.. I can already see the music theory course are going to really help on this endeavor but having specific tunes as an example will take it to the next level.. rock on sir!

I'm hooked

benjamin schermutzki

Yes! please do it!

I sometimes get stuck in the songwriting process. I use Logic Pro X as well. I'll start with drums, get some guitars recorded, lay down a bass line, and then I stop there because the rest of the process is more complicated. Seeing you break this one down would be super useful. Nice tune!

Love this idea!!

Davin

That definitely sounds interesting!

Ryan Arana

Great idea. I have been struggling with pro tools.

Joe Zeigenfus

Definitely! Especially the melody/chords/guitar parts relationship

Josh Firlotte

I'm very interested in the process from the idea to the completed song. Also, I'm a singer first but I'm trying to become a better guitar player and atm I can't sing and play at the same time. Is that a skill one learns as they become more proficient on the guitar? Is there a process to help with it?

Joe

I think it would be fantastic!!!!!!! Great sound!

Love the idea for learning music theory. Suggestion; Break out the parts to focus on different subjects so we may chose the parts we want to watch. For example, I would want to learn theory, chord combinations, soloing, melody, but I have no interest at all in Logic pro x and mixing and tracking. Sounds like a good method though to offer something for everyone's varied interests.

this! this is brilliant! I'd really love to have this type of videos! I'm super interested and excited! The entire process of writing, recording different instruments and then mixing everything would be amazing! this is exactly what I'm going through right now and having all this on one resource is priceless. Thanks a million!

Alexander

Would love to see this as well. pure gold!

Stuart Gilmour

Yes!

Ken Schroeder

Looking forward to it.

Cool, I would like to see what was going on in your mind while the songs playing. How technic and theory is used in your song. Great fun tune BTW! Really dig it. Even with basic jamming over a jam track. Curious what goes through your mind while improvising. The shapes the scales. Would be cool to get ideas. Similar to the ending to the YouTube "how to use the CAGED system to play solo" or "minor pentatonic scales in the CAGED system" video. Digged that!

Great idea! I think that would help me out alot...been trying to structure songs with whole whole half stuff.

I’m super interested. I’ve got a song I’m struggling to write a chorus for.
