Chapter 750 - Everyone knew it was coming

From the kids, I learn that it is possible to summon a personal screen to watch the event. It is even possible to filter out people to watch the person you want. So, of course, I now sit outside, resting against the side of Wolfy and surrounded by kids, Lily on one side and Biscuit, who, even this time, does not participate in the event.

Same as that black-haired bulldozer, the corgi stays in the common area, and even for the same reason, though he is not as forceful about it as she is. That damned, stubborn girl.

Now, Biscuit in his puppy form lies in my lap, and even though he tries to hide it, I notice him helping me. Just that tiny little bit as he gets rid of what I cannot contain fully, so it does not hurt the kids. And the kids include that enormous black wolf as well. Though annoyed, he lets us rest against him and watches the event with us.

Enan, Seneca, Deva, and quiet Irwys, Min-Jae’s disciple, are all here. We also finally meet a vyssari girl called Rye, Tess’s disciple.

She is just like that tiny vyssari child I met in the Megacity. Tiny, huge eyes, cute scaly legs, and a small, round face.

It makes me want to protect her with my life, feed her all my precious earth sweets that remain, and tease her just so I can watch her be angry at me, which would make her seem even more cute. Just like a little kitten trying to be dangerous.

She is blonde and has eyes that seem to be a trait. They are… weird. It is hard to guess their colors as it continues to shift according to the light and sometimes her mood. It is to the point I wonder if she does not have a bit of feylith blood, though she does not seem to change her hair color.

Rye is quiet, just like Min-Jae’s Irwys, but unlike him, she is more decisive. Once we sit down, she rests against my side in a way that seems like a cat finding a spot warmed up by the sun to rest on.

I realize my body is warmer than usual, even with my control, but it is not to the point of hurting anyone, so I let it be to not spook her away.

Even the system screen she watches the event on is smaller than the others.

Now only Lily’s Pallius is missing, once again making me realize how stubborn that girl is. Hah, I guess I will have to supply her with a few dozen of my left arms. After the body upgrade, they will be incredible sacrifices for her. Or maybe I could buy her flowers or something. I will have to ask Tess… no, not her. She would make fun of me. I will ask Izzy.

I hear Deva shout excitedly and turn to watch her screen. There we see Sophie and Izzy, just the two of them inside one of the dungeons. Like the others I have seen, this one is different as well. It is an old, breaking-apart stairway heading towards the sky in what almost looks like an old rocket silo.

They already walk for what I guess is over ten minutes, and no changes are apparent in the environment. But this time, Sophie seems to have detected something and disrupted it. The air near them flickers in the area, and the stairway disappears, revealing that the entire environment changes to a boneyard, with many skeletons as tall as buildings.

From behind one of them, a creature looks up. A lizard with a third vertical eye in the middle of its forehead and four protrusions looking like tentacles expanding from its head.

It hisses at the same time as Noodle drops from Izzy’s arm and grows in size to match the monsters.

Fragment of the Eternal Flame blazes around Izzy, and her veins become visible through her skin. Sophie waves her hand, and Blackie escapes from her shadow, throwing himself against a pile of bones from which a golem made out of them steps out.

Then, more monsters like the first one start appearing. Dozens, hundreds of them start climbing from under the bones and massive corpses around. Each of them is the same in looks, just maybe one-fifth of the size. The entire area starts flickering with the environment constantly changing as the fight starts, with Noodle coiling around both girls to protect them, and the golem rushes to the fight with loud stomping.

Deva continues to shout for Sophie to finally stop playing around, with all six arms in the air, and curses probably a bit more than a kid should.

I feel a tug on my clothes and look to my right at the tiny vyssari girl.

“What?” I ask.

She points at Biscuit.

“Go on. He doesn’t bite.”

The girl nods and starts reaching out her hand.

I cannot help myself but add, “I think.”

That causes her to stop and look back at me. That cute face furrows in an expression that reminds me of Tess so much. With a tiny sigh, she then reaches anyway and starts petting Biscuit’s back.

At this point, I wonder, with her being so tiny, she could probably ride Biscuit in his adult form, right? Or be really close to it. Honestly, wouldn’t even I be able to ride on Biscuit if he turned into his horse-sized form?

The corgi just turns around to look at her and yawns before turning back and lying his head on my leg.

“Deva,” I rest back lazily and call towards the thylarin who still cheers on her master.

Just for a moment, she glances at me, annoyed, “What?”

"I have met several replicas of the Last Elf, and I even spoke with that petty saboteur. I also met the Ruler of Greed and the Ruler of Diligence, or at least their vessels. I ran into the Ruler of Kindness as well, and she helped me throw some guy off a balcony. I think I have seen the vessel of the Ruler of Wrath, too. By the way, have you heard about the Ancient Monster, the Absolute, Lissandra Hawthorne? Yes? Good. I met her, too, and she is trying to become my master. What else… oh, the intent of the Ruler of Envy spoke to me at one point, and I met a demon with five hearts, a lunatic that nearly became the Ruler of Wrath. One more thing, if you shout at me again, I will lock your kinetic movements until Sophie comes out and I will let the others stuff grass into your mouth or bury you in dirt."

There is no shouting, but her eyes are beautiful to watch. All six of her hands look like they are squeezing someone’s neck.

Then I reach out and ruffle Enan’s hair too while flicking his cat ears a few times to his utter shock.

Tiny Rye does not escape either. I lift her and hold her in front of me and stare at her as she stares at me. It is as great a feeling as I had thought it would be. I almost want to hug her too, but I do not push it, and instead, I put her back and boop her tiny, tiny nose while saying, “Biscuit, one deer jerky if you brutally attack this tiny vyssari.”

It does not take even a second for Biscuit to twist around, shrink a bit, and jump against her, which finally forces her to make a tiny noise from her serious face. A cute squeak as Biscuit starts licking her face and rubbing himself against her, energetically, but very gently.

Looking to my left, Irwys meets my eyes, scared and worried of what might come, but I just shrug, “We introverts should stand together.”

He nods eagerly in relief.

My last target is Seneca, whose hair moves more wildly in a darker shade of blue. Even so, I reach towards the hair only to change direction at the last moment and poke her ribs a few times to tickle her.

In revenge, a flame ball crashes against my face, but I barely notice it, though it would likely kill someone from Easy difficulty.

Satisfied and feeling much better, I close my eyes and breathe deeply.

Life is too short to not rage bait kids.

The kids, as silly as they are, mostly forget what I have done half an hour later, and we watch the event together. Well, other than Deva, that girl sure can hold a grudge, though she does not shout anymore. She is suspecting–correctly–that I would do just what I threatened to do.

I am an asshole.

Rye rests against my right side, and Biscuit against her, while Seneca watches, lying with her head on my knee. Irwys is to my left, sometimes excitedly pointing out things on the screen and showing them to me. Enan, meanwhile, talks to Lily about lynthari.

There are so many people fighting in the dungeons, and the dungeons come in countless varieties. All of them contain monsters, though power levels differ greatly. There are a few Hard difficulty groups that get wiped out by Champion grade monsters, as well as Hard difficulty guys facing level 1 goblins.

I know the capabilities of Group 4, so I mostly watch the people from other rounds of Earth’s tutorial, especially the Kings.

At this point, I have confirmed that Jean is likely the strongest out of them, if I do not count Vic, obviously. I'm not absolutely sure, but I think his Physique now uses even primordial energies that hit him to speed up his healing and increase his durability, and it feels like he probably got an adaptive defense passive that makes him more durable the longer he faces a certain element, primordial energy, skill, and such.

That boy Maxim with his void wolves is also interesting. He is young, yet decisive, and he can now summon new shadow monsters so large that one even flies and carries him around.

Derick and his wife, Noelle, are still a good duo, and the slim man is faster, his attacks and the tattoos on his body disrupt mana more easily, and they seem to have gone through a huge upgrade.

I'm also curious about Baek, but most of the time, the laziest king just tags behind his group, and that girl Kang Jiwon, who seems to have gone for bulldozer sim gameplay, just like Lily.

Yet, over all of them and over everyone from the other planet, Vic shines the most, and I don’t say it because she is my sister. Her duplicates cooperate better and better and always move with clear intent, while her body is easily the most powerful out of Earth’s tutorial.

She isn’t as strong as Jean, as fast as Tacita, and doesn’t have regeneration as Lily. But damn, she is impressively durable, and her strength and speed in spikes almost match Jean and Tacita, though it destroys even her body. And that durability and other capabilities are shared with all of her duplicates as well.

But I still have a bit of a hard time thinking who would win if she and Tacita fought. And I swear it isn’t because I have an irrational fear of Tacita, who might be my natural-born predator.

Once the fights become more boring as people just walk through the dungeons, I turn my attention back to myself as I just notice something. The progress of the body upgrade is slowing down and alleviating some pressure put on me. It is nothing huge, only around a 20 percent drop in difficulty that will probably rise again soon, yet it still feels like having a horse sized corgi taken off my shoulders, letting me finally breathe.

Even then, I do not stop. I take it as a sign of weakness from my torturer and keep attacking the changes made to my body, working around them, working with them, and watching how far I can push them while learning from every change.

It is also when a few notifications sound.

Due to the individual enhancement part of your body upgrade, and based on your performance so far and the recalculated state of your body, additional adjustments have been applied to your traits to reflect individual enhancements more accurately.

And then another one.

Author note: Hey hey! First off, thanks for paying your taxes!

Secondly, I’m still not sure on a name for the new skill. I really like "Current," but I feel it could be even better - I’m terrible at naming things.

There are the names I’m currently considering, but don’t be shy to share your thoughts or even suggest completely new ideas.
The name should hint at the skill’s ability to channel large amounts of energies, hold, and store them. Metaphorical names work too - just look at "Eclipse." The name doesn’t describe the skill directly, but it fits and it’s cool as hell.
Something like "Ur Line" or "Ley Line" is another example of that.

Here are the ones I’m thinking about: Conduit, Current, Transference, Transfer, Channel, Torrent, Flow.

Surge, Course, Flux, Flume, Gush, Rush, Cascade, hmm... Perhaps Swell or Escalate. From the comments, I like Flux, Mana Vector (vector stuff is special I heard), Conductor. We have to remember Accumulation + Redistribution + Mana Manipulation = So perhaps I like Swell. "Current" worked for me when I read it, incidentally. It doesn't have the Accumulation part perhaps?

I like "flow" the most, for the simple reason that in current terminology, it's simply the most powerful; its name is the shortest (the ur line was much stronger than the ley line), while its meaning is the most general (meaning it will have the widest range of influence, affecting the greatest number of things). On the other hand, maybe it would be better to save "flow" for a future evolution of "current." And there's another terrible and cruel option: "manipulation," because it will allow Nat to do the same thing with primal energies and other stuff, the same thing it currently does with mana. And the cruelty lies in the fact that it does the same thing as "mana manipulation," so it effectively replaces it. Or, to take it back, I'd rather "mana manipulation" evolve into "mana." PS, am I seeing correctly that Nat's traits have a higher evolution cap?

Here are some that are more or less related to elements and others that I came up with after 10 minutes of searching. For water: deluge - a severe flood. For fire: fusillade - a series of shots fired or missiles thrown all at the same time or in quick succession For wind: Squall - a sudden violent gust of wind or a localized storm, especially one bringing rain, snow, or sleet. As for some other possible words if you need extra there are. Boutade - a sudden outburst or outbreak. Ebullition - the action of bubbling or boiling.

How about “Tempest”. I love the idea of his mana being a raging storm slowly accumulating power to annihilate anything in his path. I also think it gives the same vibe as eclipse but this new skill Tempest lets the storm of energy both inside and around him become his to accumulate and manipulate.

I kind of like [Accretion]. It has properties of accumulation, storage, and transference while also fitting with the astronomical theming of eclipse with a Blackhole Accretion disk. I like how it fits Nat's whole "suck in and take control of all mana", especially with regards to his black mana.

I thought about the name of the new power for a day and read through the comments again. I kinda would like it if we could incorporate Nat's tendency to simplify things to reducing the letters in the power's name as well as the name being a verb and a noun and having multiple meanings. For these reasons I favour a progression from a 5 to 4 then 3 letter names for Nat. I've suggested [Flux] and there are other 4 letter suggestions, and I saw [Dam] as a suggestion which I think is good too. What about [AON]? It is a financial acronym for All or None suggesting total commitment and harmonises with Nat's concept of [Pride] to break or break through. Probably overthinking it, but it's a fun way to pass the time :)

[Conductor] or [conduit] are the two that come to mind especially with the systems tendency to use words for powerful skills that have multiple interpretations. A conductor being something that easily absorbs and transfers energy and also, as someone who conducts trains or music, etc. Conduit is something that is used to control the flow of something somewhere else, holding that thing (energy, funds, electricity, etc.), until it can be moved elsewhere, in addition to being a person or being able to connect with or channel the “otherworldly” or psychic power. I also like conduit because it hints at Nat’s spatial/teleportation abilities.

[Conductor] - the material-physics based meaning gives you some of what you were going for with conduit/flow, playing into his self-control as an energy machine, going along with a material capable of handling large amounts of energy. but also has the 'alternate meaning' of a musical/orchestra conductor, someone controlling a lot of different kinds of energies simultaneously, the idea of merging different 'sounds' to create a single 'piece', which touches on his manipulation of multiple energy types. TBH I like the currently listed names less than the prior two big ones as Redistribution and Accumulation both felt like things with really high 'metaphysical ceilings' and while i get the idea of the skill none of the listed ones had that energy to me - you're always losing some of either the multiple energy types, storage, conversion, or 'large size/amplitude'. That's why i suggest [Conductor] which lets you do a little wordplay with multiple meanings.

Of the ideas given, Channel seems to thematically line up the most with the concepts of moving and storing. My thinking is, "channel" can be a noun or a verb. It can contain a river, which has a current, or it it can be the active directing of something. He deepens the channel to accumulate, or accelerates the river to transfer.

I really like "Current" as well, but for the sake of brainstorming here are some more ideas: Stream, Passage, Flux, Transmission, Conveyance, Conduction, Permeation Going off the idea that single word skills that are more definitionally inclusive are more powerful, I think Flux is pretty nice as well for what you're combining here. "Flux" has several meanings, including a state of constant change or flow, a substance used in metallurgy to aid melting, and a concept in physics and mathematics for the rate of flow through a surface or substance

I mean if it’s at the same level as eclipse where the end future of level 100 ECLIPSE is a physical reality of eclipsing everyone such that only Nat can use mana instead of a metaphorical one, call this one SINGULARITY. Idk but current is AMPERAGE also the process of moving energy or power through a GRID is TRANSMISSION. So my suggestions are MANA GRID keep it simple and describe the whole system of storage, transmission and interconnection(this works well with black mana. See interconnection is basically where a GRID meets another GRID and either gives it power or takes power. Current is fine, but feels like a step down. “Accretion” is a very good word, is a synonym of accumulation, has a connection with black holes, and could even be said to have more emphasis than accumulation, but it seems to miss the shades of meaning that could imply release or control to account for [Mana Manipulation] or [Redistribution]. I’m guessing it’s too early for the [Control] skill, but I was hoping at least for [Mana Control].

I’d suggest ‘Change’, but ‘Change’ is really high up there on the conceptual power-scale. If you think the skill is that strong, then I feel like ‘Change’ is near perfect. The only issue is that it doesn’t consolidate the accumulation part of the skill. ‘Torrent’ is mighty nice, because if its ‘Current’ that means the skill inherently has a dial for how much it pushes through at a time making fine control inherent, if it is ‘Torrent’ it probably allows an avenue to make ‘Focus’ level up some more to control it better. So I was searching for a good name that describes the outcome and the feeling of impending doom lol but my suggestions are Upheaval, Halcyon and or Leviathan Rising or just Leviathan these names come closest to representing "the calm before the storm" which is exactly what people feel when Nathaniel channels mana lol. After doing more research Leviathan is probably the best name I listed I'll post my reasoning why from the net, "Leviathan" stands for a large, powerful, and often chaotic sea monster from ancient mythology and the Old Testament, and it can also represent something of immense size or power. In a biblical context, it symbolizes evil or the untamable forces of nature that God has power over. In modern usage, the term is often used to describe anything huge, such as a ship, or in political philosophy, as in Thomas Hobbes' work Leviathan.

Of the provided suggestions I think Torrent works best. All the others only describe the movement of energy but are missing the accumulative/storage aspect. Torrent atleast implies a very large amount of energy being moved. Conduit could work too since Nat's body is becoming a conduit of mana, but I actually think this would work better for if he ever upgrades his trait again: mana circuit -> mana physique -> mana conduit

Tbh after reviewing all the comments Tide or Riptide sounds the best and what you are looking for. It is the massive flow of water from one place to another based on an outside force. It also stores water in a location holding it there for an extended period of time until a new force pulls it away. This coincides extremely well with what you are saying for it. You even get storage cause water will get stuck in pools as the force pulls part of it away. So I would pick Tide or even Riptide if you want a more violent connotation. Cool sounding would be like tidal engine or tidal drive or tidao conflux but these don't feel right for this story. So Tide or riptide work best I think

Honestly. Reservoir seems cooler than Current. Undertow also keeps that fluid flowy vibe with more power attached. Confluence also one ups the current theme. Nexus is also pretty damn cool and reminds me of my intro to reading manga (spectrumnexus.com) and fits damn well as the convergence point of mana and energy. Hell I’d love to recommend Loom too as it is kind of like the convergence point of all the threads (of mana/energies) but knowing how much Nat hated anything to do with knitting/weaving maybe that’s not the best. Then again, it would be hilarious if his best skill to date is something he loathes the name of 😂

Some people suggested "Tide" as a name idea and I think it fits perfect where Ebb and flood represent the processes of gathering and using the energies. At the same time the sea is great symbolic image to represent the storage of large quantities of energy. So I really like Tide.

My suggestion is "Convergence". the coming together of mana, thermal and kinetic energy forming a new combined pool for them all. Well that came out of nowhere. I shouldn't be surprised but damn! > should hint at the skill’s ability to channel large amounts of energies, hold, and store them. Current works quite well imo. I felt like it fit when I read it. Source is arguably really good - especially since it's combining 3 separate skills. However you could argue that Source is Too strong of a name i.e. maybe if it combined 4 or 5 skills. Tides/Tidal. Leans more towards channeling and storing energy but storing and holding go hand in hand with this name imo. It also does give the impression of being large/unstoppable/inevitable which could be good. Other names kind of don't gel that well or evokes too much of 1 thing e.g. Dam (more for storing) Spillway (more for channeling and even then kinda just sounds bad). Attenuator (more for fine control, small volume and changing others mana to your own)

From your options I like Conduit and Flow best. Other than that I also really like Flux, suggested by Daniel Playford, it also means flowing of the tide or continuous flow in large quantities. Torrent would be a good contender too. Honorable mention for Accretion as suggested by Aoth the Arcane, i like the feel of the name, but maybe not as fitting, would be good for a skill that slowly grows stronger over time, simply by existong, tho.

In regards to the skill name, Current fits quite well because large bodies of water hold vast amounts of liquid that are distributed through currents which involves temperature regulation and vast quantities of kinetic energy. I like the idea of using flow/current but without mentioning them explicitly. Referencing rivers gives an implication of movement without being too obtuse. My suggestions: - Conflux/Confluence -> a point at which rivers meet. Would work with the skill being a merger of Redistribution and Accumulation, i.e. Nat is a merger of his primordial energies and mana. -Delta/Estuary -> a point at which rivers meet oceans/seas and deposit sediment. Would work particularly well with Accumulation (Nat is the delta of those energies, the point at which they accumulate).

I really like Confluence as a higher tier name for the three concepts. Redistribution was energy transitioning from absorption/release to kinetic/thermal transmutation to thermal/mana conversion, accumulation is safely storing and using large amounts, and mana manipulation is the control aspect of the skill. Current would best if the skill is more about the flow of large amounts of power rather than controlling them in which case Confluence is a lot nicer to me

Tftc! I personally think that [Channel] is really cool as it would imply moving at the most basic level a bunch of "things" (kinetic, heat, mana) and being such a "simple" word as we have been hinted at, it probably is a pretty pretty powerful skill when leveled

I love when Nat bullies kids. I didn't expect the traits to he able to get an extra upgrade level. I wonder if the third one will also get that or if he'll need another body upgrade. I like mana conduit more than current personally.

I mean.. to accumulate and redistribute you need to have Control. But seeing as this is Mana.. i think you just change Mana Manipulation to Mana Control

So redistribution is change and accumulation is storage so in my mind i was thinking maybe potential idk when i was thinking of storage and change and energy I was thinking of nuclear power and thats just potential energy and since this seems like a big step it needs to be a one word that encompasses a lot so potential

Mana manipulation is down to 74 after re-acquisition. Presumably that means his Absolute quest is now down to 1/3 objectives completed. Also, wow, was that all Nats tampering, or was that not an uncommon result for a second stage body upgrade?

I like the idea of flow as well. Or maybe flux? Flux: an abnormal discharge of blood or other matter from within the body. But we all know Nat is the most normal. So maybe flux doesn't fit too well. I can't remember if you've used if for anything yet either

TFTC, love the name of the new skill. It may be a little dramatic, but I think I like conductor a lot, too. In my mind, it would be like a orchestra of different mana wavelength (which is cool, because waves of sound…) being directed by Nat all alone, no matter how enormous the amount of instruments or how overwhelming the sound.

Did you notice that, in typical Nat fashion, Nat did not distinguish that the Lissandra he met was a copy from the tutorial. I suppose, given that it is known she died a long time ago, that it goes without saying. It is also reflective of how Nat treats them as real people.
