Chapter 710 - The Party

After waiting for a minute in front of the doors, two burly guards step aside, allowing me to enter the balcony, if it can even be called that. It is far too huge, placed in likely the highest place in the Megacity. The size is like one or two football fields, reaching out far enough to offer a sweeping view of the city and the area beyond.

Dozens of trees grow from the marble floor, which is interwoven with crystal parts, giving a view through to below. I know there are glass bridges on Earth, but I doubt they can compare. These crystal sections of the balcony make up about one third of the space and truly look as if there is nothing at all. Only when you step on them do small ripples spread out like stepping on water, and if you stay still for a bit, they calm down.

Stepping onto one of them, I look down at the city below and stomp a few times, ignoring the condescending looks from the people around me. Then, paying them no mind, I squat and slap the transparent crystal floor several times, creating an audible noise as my palm meets the transparent crystal.

I start looking around for a drink, curious what would happen if I poured water onto the floor. When I look up, I see my Handler nearby in her fake form, with black hair streaked with red and brown eyes.

She gives me an interesting look, but just in case, I still ask, “Do you by chance have a glass of water?”

Not even taking my question into account, she asks instead, “What is with that crown over your head? The guards did not want to let you in, you know that? I had to pull some strings. Your eyes, too, why are they activated?”

Realizing I will not get to test the liquid’s effect on this crystal, I stand up and face her. “I have realized I do not have to hold back that much.”

People keep passing us, but knowing where to look, I can tell she has deployed a field that twists our words. It strips the original meaning and makes it sound like we are speaking about something else or about nothing at all.

So I talk without worry. “I saw S-ranks, the strongest of the attendees, and walked away with one clear thought.”

My Handler stays quiet, but I know what is likely going through her head, so I continue. “You might think that I am arrogant. Or that it is my pride, or the people in Primordial Lunatics might be influencing me. You might even say I cannot compare to people like Nyssa, and as annoying as it is, she thinks the same, and many others too. I will not lie, it annoys me a little too, but I can hold myself back. I did that even during the event.”

I feel the corner of my lips twist into a smile. “But I saw them fight and came to a simple conclusion. I can fight them. Winning is another matter, but damn, I’ll make sure the cost of challenging me is too high for anyone to consider it.”

As she opens her mouth, she is smiling back at me. “You might get angry at me for this, but there is one person you remind me of more than anyone else.”

“I will not get angry for that, but never forget that I am me. I follow no one’s path, I make my own. And in this entire universe, there’s only one person I have to beat.”

“And who might that be?”

“Me, obviously.” I smile this time, certain of every word. “Everyone else can be reached and beaten, which would leave me without a target or a goal, satisfied and stagnant. But I won’t let that happen. Every day, I’ll keep pushing to surpass the me from yesterday.”

She studies me for a moment before saying softly, “How pretty your pride is turning out to be.” With a wave of her hand, the field she created dissolves, and her tone shifts back to normal. “Do whatever you want. You never listen to me anyway.”

“Maybe I do listen to you, a little.”

“As if.” She steps closer, and I offer her my arm, noticing the pale red dress she’s wearing, her styled hair, and how different she seems with so many people around. “Have you noticed your guild master and her Handler yet?” she asks.

“I was busy.”

“Busy making a fool of yourself. Sure,” she moves to turn us toward the edge of the balcony where, in the distance, two figures stand.

Through all the people walking around, I recognize Nyssa. She sits on the railing, her legs swinging, with her face turned toward the inside of the balcony and the groups of people.

She is wearing a pale blue and white dress, the same colors as our guild and the only colors I have ever seen her in. With her albinish white eyebrows and pale eyes, and black flowing hair, she looks almost ethereal, like something that should not exist in this world and might crumble under a single touch.

Next to her stands a woman. The most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my life, and I know for sure I will not ever see anyone more beautiful as long as I live. It is hard to say what makes her so perfect because I cannot find anything that is not. Is it her long golden hair? Her violet eyes? The way she carries herself and her movements that seem so full of life and elegance, while making you feel like you are watching an old childhood friend?

I still recognize her, though the last time I saw her was beyond the barrier, lost in slumber. Everyone else in the room seems to know her identity as well, greeting her with respect that rightfully belongs to one of the oldest beings in the system and one of the fourteen Rulers.

“She is Nyssa's Handler?” I ask Greed at my side.

“Yes. Kindness noticed Nyssa’s talent right away and took her in. I won’t tell you more–that’s for them to share if they want to.”

“Got it.” I pause and look around the room as we start walking towards them.

I am currently getting a lot of attention too, most first glancing at the black crown over my head that I still keep up there. I feed it bits of my mana while stopping it from absorbing any other. Some people do seem to realize how difficult that is.

There are also, as expected, others doing something similar. People with crowns, mantles, and rings. Also, many people show off their items, traits, or powerful active skills.

Before I realize it, we have already walked through the groups of people and reached the balcony next to Nyssa and Kindness.

The beautiful Ruler smiles at me. “It is nice to see you here, Nathaniel, and doing so well. It is also exciting to see your mastery over your “black mana” grow.”

As she says it, the two words in her sentence don't come out with her voice, but “black mana” is said in my voice.

“I am doing my best. There is still more to come,” I answer.

“Oh?” She tilts her head playfully and smiles in a way that tightens my chest. “That is surprising. I expected you to react when I told you the true name of “black mana”” Once again, the words “black mana” are said in my voice.

Proudly, I straighten up and stick out my chest. “I came prepared.”

“You did?” She steps closer, curiosity in her eyes, and I finally notice the white dress she’s wearing. It moves with her, graceful and fluid, almost alive.

“Obviously. I figured before coming here that a few people would know the fake name of black mana. I call it fake because I have decided to call it black mana, and soon everyone else will as well.”

Nyssa, still swinging her legs, watches and listens curiously, while my Handler has that weird expression of disbelief or something similarly rude.

“So, there is a part of me I call Redacthaniel, and it does one thing. Every time it hears something that could be the ‘true’ name of black mana, that part of my mind censors it and replaces it with “black mana.”

“How amazing!” Kindness laughs.

“Are you fucking serious?” Greed mumbles from the side.

“Black mana, black mana, black mana, black mana.” The Ruler of Kindness continues to talk quickly, but all her words are replaced by my flat voice saying that as Redacthaniel goes into action.

“Did not hear a thing,” I say.

“This is the dumbest, the weirdest, the most pathetic, and the most petty thing I’ve witnessed in my entire fucking life. Kindness, let us go somewhere else because damn, I need a drink. And do not forget that my identity is secret,” Greed groans and gestures at Kindness, who then pretends it was her idea and pulls Greed away.

Being left alone with Nyssa, I look at her and praise myself since everyone seems to be busy, and then I ask her, “Morwag did not come?”

“They said MorMor is not allowed after the last time,” she answers.

I ignore that strangely cute nickname entirely and ask, “Are you happy with your Handler?”

Her legs stop swinging, and she gives me all of her attention. “She is someone who gave purpose to my life and someone I deeply love for that. And I will do anything to fulfill her wish.”

I give it a thought and try to estimate her chances and the sheer insanity of that goal. But seeing Nyssa’s eyes, maybe… maybe there is a chance for her to do it. Kindness surely seems to believe that.

“Good luck with that, I guess,” I say.

“Thank you, Nathaniel. You do not have to keep me company, I like to be alone. Go and meet the others.”

I open my mouth, ready to be insulted by being thrown into a bag with extroverts, but then I close it. I have already seen Victoria and Lyraen and some other people I could mess with, so I just wave at her and leave.

My Mana Wavelength Iris continues to pick up on shifts of mana in the area, and there are a few assholes trying to overwhelm my trait in the way so many people used to do in the past. Either to test me, or they are just dicks. It does not matter. My mind is much stronger now, and I endure that much easily.

Halfway toward Victoria, I notice someone else to the side and change direction, heading toward a small table where a Lumoran man stands.

Brich laughs loudly at something another lumoran says as the other walks away, leaving Brich alone. Noticing me coming closer, the lumoran sword thief smiles and waves at me. On his back, there is Calvorn, but only the handle of the sword sticks out, the rest is sealed in a bulky metal sheath seemingly built to seal in the weapon. It looks like a likely successful attempt to keep the weapon quiet, with no sign of life from it.

“You are that guy who used that Empyrean projectile to pierce my head,” he says, taking a step closer and happily shaking my hand with excitement.

“I thought your backups were older and you would not remember.”

“Oh, that? We fixed that long ago! There is a main backup done once every hour, but every minute, there are multiple smaller ones. Not full, but they contain enough data for me to know what happened before the restart,” he answers cheerily and points at my crown. “Damn, I did not know there is an attendee with "black mana."” Once again, those words come out in my flat voice.

“I bought it on the last page of the system shop. No one ever scrolls down there,” I answer.

That makes him bare his teeth in another big smile. “No ill will, man, yeah? You know, for all that stuff with the sword, it was nothing personal. And seeing your "black mana", I would like us to cooperate.”

“So Crimson Forge can try to take it apart, and maybe me as well?”

“If you want to. I know your Primordial Lunatics have the Doc, and his implants are fabulous. I myself have two of them, and he sometimes works with us, but there is much more than that we could do.”

I cannot even be surprised by the revelation about the Doc and just shake my head. “There could be some cooperation, but I am not that interested in all that mind-backup stuff.”

“Good! I knew I saw something in you! I will contact you soon. Damn, the old guys will be happy. By the way, is Lyraen still glaring at my back?”

I move my head to the side and look behind Brich, seeing Lyraen float near one of the tables, staring very intently in this direction.

“Yup.”

“Good. If we can see him, it means he is not invisible and preparing some nasty attack!”

You already know it : it's .... Black Mana.... :D

Malestan

Thank you for the chappie!

Kirin

I don’t think it’s black mana — has it ever actually been described as black? Considering how rare it is, it wouldn’t make sense for someone new to possess it.
If I remember correctly, Christoph overlapped with Nat’s memory of someone he somewhat knew on Earth.

Jostein 🇳🇴

Already, and the party isn't even over yet

Nemesis

So maybe what he realized and redacted about Christoph is that his mana arms thingy was made with [redacted]black mana[/redacted]? Would explain how it’s able to absorb shit

Josh Cothran

I think that master may be the 3rd tier of sub-class, the one before ruler

Nemesis

Black Mana. What else would it be called? Very obvious. Un

Terri Harris

Understandably we all want to know "Black Mana"'s "True Name", but story-wise it might actually help Nat to name it Black Mana as a way to dominate, control, and make it his own. In learning the name of a thing you also learn that it's not yours, others have named it and it was theirs as well. The mana being Black Mana means that it's Nats, and he -owns- it.

Manny

This is my favourite chapter Calling back the long standing joke where he references his past and future self either in admiration or in jest. Using it to develop his insane pride. The simple message of not caring about the path of others, being just a little better than the you of yesterday. Seriously lovely to read and something I'm trying to do myself.

Ralph

I knew it! Cerim has extended Nat's pettiness to keep us from learning Black Mana by any other name now, too! 😂

facetiousk

Is a Master to a Ruler, similar to a Champion to an Absolute?

Daniel Golding

I want to know the REAL name of Black Mana

Daniel Golding

I want the twins to start calling it 'Freedom Mana' though

Manther

The real name is definitely 'Black Mana' We already know that it goes by many other names (and it appears Kindness tried multiple different names to try and get past the censors) So you can't really say that any of them are the 'True' name of Black Mana

Manther

And in this entire universe, there’s only one person I have to beat.” “And who might that be?” “Me, obviously.” The final Boss about to be Mapthaniel with the skills [Map] and [Draw] able to Draw the Best Mana Maps and other stuff Up as well.

Max

Like. Yes. Ahah funny joke. But if we're serious for a moment, you still need to come up with the real name. And we still need to learn it someday.

Poutine Au Syrop d'érable

Even if nat is petty that way, we still need to learn it. You can't just not create a name for it, and use Nat's pettyness just so that you don't need to invent it. Plus the true name of black mana can be said from other's pov. And thr name is a clue about how to use it too.

Poutine Au Syrop d'érable

13 in the tutorial because that is how many the rulers had reached. Last time we saw lissandra, pride clear floor 13 and 14 of beyond and entered the 15th floor before leaving. We have no idea how many floors are in beyond. There's a ruler for each of the 7 virtues and sins, does not correlate to the number of floors in the first dungeon.

Whishkeyss

TFTC!!!!

Ronnel

At least twice before the end of the party.

Joe Woodhouse

Dammit!!!!Do not distract the author from the party, there could still be so much fun! MorMor lmao 🤣

M Schweibold

14 rulers? Aren’t there only 13 floors in beyond and the tutorial?

rapatel01

A damn fine chapter

Alex Reed

Whats going on with group four these days?

RnR_ RnR

Awesome so it was called black mana all this time who would have guessed 😉

Luis Guerrero

Well all the theorizing anout black mana has gone to waste because we cant even learn the original name now

TBONEMAN

To censor the word, Nat has to actually know it. If he ever needs the name he can justget it from Redacthaniel.

Ivan Jelenić

If Nat ever reaches the Ruler level he will legit censor the real name of Black Mana for everyone lol. Redacthaniel on a system scale

zoarian

Another thing, if that is the most petty thing (plus the other adjectives) that Ruby's has ever seen in her life, then she better hold onto her hat as i am sure Nat can top it at least twice before the end of the tutorial 😀

Nemesis

I assume the person Ruby believes Nat resembles is Lissandra. I think that they have a fair bit in common

Nemesis

Exactly lol fuck it, we don't care lol

Michel Kommers

I thought so too, know I’m thinking that everyone in S-rank knows it.

TYRELL GRAY

You know what’s funny, nat has a mana mantle- it’s his construct.- the mana sovereignty mantle, so I always wonder how different are they

TYRELL GRAY

Nat will totally try to analyse the Mana Ring and Mana Mantle if the S-rank archer lady shows up. I wonder how far he'll get?

zoarian

Bringing Morwag with his Leyline will do it.

Arnon Parenti

He just censors everything. Even if someone sais "black mana" redacthaniel censors it to Black Mana in my own voice

Arnon Parenti

This is a better party than the mindfuckers' party and that one was great.

Arnon Parenti

Thank you!

Andrew

Thanks for the chapter!

BlackRazaras

Is nathaniel petty or is Cerim? Come on, overshadowing be dawned. Name the damn thing. Also I agree with greed but apply it to both of you. Not knowing the name, and hence an important clue as to what he could do with it, is silly at this point. Plus I thought only the rulers and rare absolutes would know what it is, as its supposed to be that rare. Good chapter thankyou

TwistedVanity

Yes, she did

TYRELL GRAY

I love that Nat is just like me. Didn't want to share the name when he asked, no matter who or how many times he asked. Then we no longer care to know the answer.

J W

I mean, I myself thought it was going to be something like Fragment Of The First And Last Mana, or even the less-satisfying Primordial Mana, and hoped it wasn't going to end up being Grand Unified Mana. But nope, [redacted] "black mana" [/redacted] is far better than both, and I'm more than satisfied with it.

Joe Woodhouse

I have the same feeling. He will by given a new title by System itself 👍

Adrian Rake

Petty Nat is the best. It is black mana no matter what others know or say 😂 He is a living Legend 🙂👍

Adrian Rake

It’s called black mana

Borbino the great

I absolutely love that Nat has just decided his name is the only right name for black mana I can’t wait for him to meet someone else with it and beat the new name into them

Borbino the great

TFTC

Lance Beam

I don't know what you're all complaining about, we were clearly told that the true name of black mana is [redacted] "black mana" [/redacted] at least eight times.

Joe Woodhouse

Nat is fucking hilarious man redacthaniel is petty in all the right ways.

Death56

I do wonder how Redacthaniel knows what to censor...

Leyphelio

I want Nat to do something to not be invited back next time just to come back to crash the party anyway just to be petty

frankie doerr

its black mana

Florian

The longer this story goes the more im convinced that nats going to become the ruler of pettiness or spite.

Oaktree

Redacthaniel is the worst but so on brand. Can't believe I was so excited to finally know what the black mana is lol

Ava

I would really like to know what the black mana really is. How very Nathaniel of him, with the pettiness.

RadiantSpren

Wonder what the real name of *black mana* is.

ZOMBIEPUG

Cerim you troll. I had just been thinking before you posted this that I hope we'd find out the name of black mana soon

Liam Zay

My curiosity at what "black mana" is will be the end of me! Just tell us!!

CptJimmy42

Man, this was a fun one!

Infinate Fail

Petty Nat is a fun Nat but damn I wish this chapter didn’t go by so fast

frankie doerr

Finding yet more ways to keep us in the dark on what black mana is, you fiend! And of course, thank you for the chapter

RogueCorvidLover

“challenging me is too high for anyone to consider it.” Didn’t liss say something similar or am I remembering things wrong?

Oaktree

FINALLYYYY!

Nerø

How are you so fast,

Kroppertites
