The Mary Celeste has attracted a lot of attention and speculation over the years, with dozens of people inventing extra details to make the story more mysterious, or even coming up with wild theories that they then publish as fact.
One of my favourite fabricated stories is a tale published in 1913. It purported to be the account of a survivor of the Mary Celeste, and explained that the abandonment had happened after the crew gathered on a floating platform for a swimming competition. When the platform gave way, the crew were dumped into the water, with all of them (apart from the author of the story) subsequently eaten by sharks.
Of course, the story turned out neither to be true, nor authored by a survivor from the ship… but it’s certainly inventive, at least!
