Typhoon Alerts in Japan

Interesting page report.... a beautiful place and culture and dangerous weather and geography. Cheers Jerry

We had lots of effects from nearby typhoons, and 2 pretty memorable ones. One of them, "Karen" (kind of predictive, I guess!) was a 100-year storm that actually killed 11 people. The pilots stationed at the airbase (including my dad) had to fly all the planes off to a safer island, and he said that as he flew back, when he neared the island, having been totally out of radio contact since the storm hit, his heart dropped because the lush green island he'd left was now just a brown rock. He had no idea whether his family was even alive.

When we lived on Guam (my dad was a career Navy pilot), the Agana base had a 4-stage typhoon warning system: 4 meant to be prepared for a typhoon to hit the island within 72 hours; 3 within 48 hours; 2 within 24 hours; and 1 meant, "YOU ARE NOW IN A TYPHOON!" I don't recall ever seeing a "4" on the warning board--"normal" was 3.
