Arrested in Japan

Yes, that outcome was OK in the end. Just a $13,000 lesson.

I must say, it is a very tragic story. This man made some critical mistakes when he decided to take the money, not report it anywhere for 4 months and then losing the original envelope too. He got baited pretty harshly by this Japanese person, however. Very slimy behavior from her! This story is a practical example of how scamming and fraud occurs in Japan. Even though crime is rare, when it happens, you as a foreigner do NOT want to be a participant in any way, shape or form. The legal system is entirely rigged against foreigners and I am very disheartened and saddened by that fact. Justice gets served overwhelmingly to Japanese people, which is ripe for exploitation by the hands of scammers, extortioners and grifters. This was a very good and informative video for all people who are thinking about living in Japan. Many great lessons in this one, that would've benefitted our troubled friend in question, had he been more aware beforehand. That said, in hindsight it's always easier to recognize your shortcomings and mistakes. I was very relieved to hear this person got a redemption, even if it cost him a lot of money and time from his life. One especially important lesson I gathered from this video, which I'm not sure got mentioned, is how important it is to realize how different countries operate. Whenever you go abroad, you should never expect things to work the same way they work back in your home country. I cannot emphasize how important it is to find information about your destination country's systems and culture. The more you learn beforehand, the smoother your experience will be, and the more likely you are to dodge possibly even more dangerous situations than the one described here. This man is very courageous for telling his story, in which he ended up making the right decision in the end. Worst case scenario, he could've been deported from the country for his entire lifetime! Let his tumultuous experience pave the path to the rest of us.

Wow, what a story. Scary stuff. I've never gotten close to any of those sorts of incidents while in Japan but I'll be thinking of this video if anything does get iffy.
