Big topics are hard to catch with a written word, aren't they. That is why we use 24 minutes videos.. so many more words a minute! :-D

Asking "Why?" is actually part of a bigger collective secret that the Japanese people guard closely. Nobody must ever know, that underneath Japan is a massive construction site where they build their next generation fighting robots to protect their society against crime and disorder! If you ever ask Japanese people "why" something is the way it is, they always assume you are snooping around their little secret - hence they enter their protective mode!
To be slightly more serious, there is a time and place for everything - even in Japan. Once you get close to people, you can be a little more lax than usual. More often than not, it is as you say - learn to accept the reality in Japan.
You just gotta accept the ways of mass culture in all countries. Doesn't matter where you go. To people who just want to know why things are the way they are, it's a completely different story, however. Understanding new habits and customs (or new thing in general!) come naturally to us.
I could always discuss lots about this topic, but I think I'll pass on it this time. All of this is part of a bigger picture, which is way too much to discuss in a comment section. Culture is a very complicated concept, that is shaped and influenced by people and media constanly!
All of this is very interesting to me. Probably, because it's very related to what I do right now. Anyways, thanks for supplying me with information from a country that intrigues me forevermore!

Yes, it is common. That is why nothing changes. Good things and bad things don't change and the bad systems don't improve in companies and governements and organizations. Just the way it is! :-D

Do you happen to know how common this mindset is considering Toyota created a system where asking why was encouraged in order to improve factory production? Are there certain job sectors where the Why isn't so taboo?
