Blitzkrieg turned, raising his other arm to continue waving at the cheering crowd around him. Up here on the float, he could see the crowds easily, and the wolf's grin was broad under his mask at the way people shouted and cheered for him. He'd never imagined this when he'd first gained his powers and put a mask.

Karl Weber hadn’t put on a costume to be a hero, to be cheered and praised. He'd done it to join his new best friend at the time, the American hero Swiftwolf. He’d become a superhero because running like, going faster than the speed of sound in a world of his own, it was something only they two could share. It had felt so amazing to have a friend who could do something like that.

Thinking about Swiftwolf always made Karl feel hollow now that the wolf was gone. For a time, Karl had thought he and Swift might be more than just friends. They’d understood each other on a level Karl had never experienced with anyone else, and the wolf had begun developing confusing feelings for the other canine. Not even he and his ex-wife been truly in love had Karl been able to talk with someone like he did Swiftwolf. But now, the joy of the race was gone, because he no longer shared it with someone else.

But the feeling he felt now, standing on this silly parade float and thanking the crowd, his voice magnified over loud speakers... There was a fierce, joyful acceptance by the people of Germany that warmed Karl to the bone. The admiration of the crowd felt for him was real again, and the broad shouldered wolf stood tall as they cheered for him. Having so many men and women shouting their thanks and looking at him adoringly... it filled a part of Karl Weber's heart that had been empty since his wife had left him.

Every time he was involved in something big, Germany held a parade like this, and each time he was tempted a little more to vanish into the mask of Blitzkrieg completely and be the hero of Germany forever. Just never go back to his old life, the empty apartment, and his life as Karl Weber.

Then suddenly, the red and gold clad wolf’s smile broadened even wider, his face practically splitting in two. The parade was passing the corner where, sitting on someone’s shoulders so she could see above the crowd, his daughter Freda watched the parade. She was waving like mad at him, her shining face grinning widely. Freda was riding on some tiger Karl did not recognize, but the man was standing beside his ex, and the lean she wolf looked bored and unconcerned rather than worried about her daughter, who she normally protected so fiercely that no man would dare touch Freda without her permission. Karl ignored the two adults, and focused only to his daughter, waving back at her.

Freda didn't know it was him of course, didn't know that her favorite hero was really her father, but she was Karl's life now. She was the reason Karl didn't become Blitzkrieg full time, why he lived in a little one room apartment and sent his ex-wife money he didn't really have. Seeing her here, smiling so brightly as she cheered him, made the red and yellow clad wolf’s tail wag with excitement.

Blitzkrieg turned, and he was facing backwards for a last glance at his daughter when it happened. There was a gushing sound near his feet and his boots felt damp, and when he looked down he gasped. A cloud of white foam was expanding around his legs from a small box, and Blitzkrieg jerked his feet up as fast as he could. His lightning speed only allowed him to partially avoid the rapidly expanding foam, so he was half in, half out of the billowing white when it solidified into a hard substance like concrete. It was Containment Foam, one of Ms. Q's old inventions that Stratagem had improved upon a thousand fold.

"Ambush!" Blitzkrieg shouted, his voice magnified by the float’s speaker system. "Run all of you!" The wolf's fists blurred and he began to smash the hardened foam, which broke under his blows. The foam could immobilize, but it wasn't sturdy like real concrete would be. He had his arm and upper body nearly free, fists a blur of motion, when the second and third foam traps went off. The white engulfed him totally, that momentary delay from the first trap preventing him from avoiding the foam. It flowed around him, and he automatically lifted his head rather than having it cover his muzzle. It solidified around him in a solid block, and Blitzkrieg gasped. He was trapped.

Trapped with an uninviting view as the float in front the one he stood on made a horrifying transformation. There was a terrible screeching noise as metal twisted and the decorated outer shell of the float was thrown off, the people thrown off or diving for safety off as the float lifted up and changed. Like a behemoth rising from the deep, the float became a monstrous robotic horse. Enmeshed in the thing’s chest was a control pod with a forward facing window that let the crazed Dr. Smeltlinger see out as his robotic creation's chest.

"Hahaha! I have you now, you damned German mongrel!” The miniature horse’s mad laughter was broken by whinnies, the short doctor’s voice carrying over the crowd thanks to large speakers built into the robot, “You won't make a fool out of the great Doctor Smeltlinger ever again!" The robot's fist rose up, preparing to crush Blitzkrieg where he stood trapped.

The shadow of the robot's fist passed over the wolf, who shook his body with all the strength and speed he had, vibrating himself like mad, trying to escape. He felt the hardened foam breaking around him, cracking and crumbling as he banged himself into it at super speed, but he couldn't break the concrete like substance fast enough. It was still holding him in place as the fist descended, and behind Karl's mask, the wolf’s eyes widened. He was going to d-
