Hozier Analysis- "It Will Come Back"

I discuss Hozier's use of metaphor, imagery, theme, motif and more throughout this track.

It's interesting to me that you hear this song as sounding "sexy". It sounded strange to me... almost unsettling. I'm not sure what it was in the music, but I reacted very differently. I do agree about the low self-worth the speaker feels throughout most of the album. It definitely manifests in this bizarre sort of de-humanization of himself. And the wolf bit at the end is my favorite. I feel like there is so much to unpack there.

this song is one of my favorites from the album. there's this theme of low self-value throughout the album, but i think this is the lowest he sees himself, where he literally doesn't refer to himself as a person. i mean he refers to himself as the serpent in from eden and a corpse in like real people do, but there's enough metaphor there to make it sound fantastical to me. this one is just straight up "i'm a stray animal starved of affection" and it makes me feel complicated because the song sounds so groovy and sexy lmao. also the speaker tricked me into thinking that "it" is probably a stray cat, until he revealed in the end that it's actually a wolf 💀
