HFK Analysis- " Sorry"

I discuss Halsey's use of diction, imagery and more in this track from Hopeless Fountain Kingdom. I also discuss some of the relationship motifs I'm noticing so far in this album.

I’m SO late but also trying to catch up. This song hits hard every time. The way I see it, it’s like every detail and problem comes from them not believing they are worthy of love and it spreads in such a way that they can’t believe they could break someone’s heart. I mean, for you to break someone’s heart you would have to really mean something really important to that person. If you don’t believe they love you, you can’t grasp the possibility of hurting them. Also I love that “couldn’t see it from the start and tore you open til the end” kinda describes the the relationship. The first sentence has the “start” and the second the “end” and it’s like all of the relationship is somehow contained within these two sentences.

I'm late, but catching up! This song just makes me wistful. Kind of like my "I'm the problem, it's me" parts connects to it in way I can't really verbalize, but really feel, deeply. KP, love how you tried to find the joy in the english-y stuff even though the song and message slowly stripped your happy away. The things you do for us. Thanks for reacting, happy you traveled safe!

Halsey said on Twitter that this song isn’t about anyone in specific because she had abandoned multiple people due to her own insecurities and fears. Also said on Twitter about their unknown lover: “it was easy to write them off and think ‘oh, they must say that to everybody.’ And ‘oh they don’t really love me.’ And to create problems in them because of my own insecurities to think that they didn’t like me that much.” And while it may not be about someone in particular, fans think that the chorus could be a response to a line in a song from The 1975 (halsey dated Matty Healy from that band and wrote multiple songs about him on her first album in particular. The song Colors that you reacted to on YouTube forever ago is about him) a fan mentioned that “the 1975 song suggests Matty’s lover was conceited to not believe that he was truly in love with her.“ she also mentioned matty’s mother in the song Colors and here they mention still remembering your mothers favorite song. Could just be a coincidence or another lover of course.

Ooh good ear about the reference in 3 am. I remember when I first heard the necklace reference in 3 am how it reminded me of the jewelry line in this song and I totally forgot, thank-you!

Ahh so the line “i can sometimes treat the people that I love like jewelry. Cause I can change my mind each day. I didn’t mean to try you on” and references this in the song 3 AM from Manic when the bridge says “im reckless, treat it like a necklace. Take a different version and I try it on for size with everybody that I know”.

this song is so sad but i really like how they are slowly opening up more and more as we go through the album, also the next song "good mourning" is another interlude like "the prologue" so you might want to do the next 2 songs together. p.s i love your headband its sooo cute
