My girlfriend is Brazilian and I went to Brazil with her. I would say the popular food is fried food, so basically exactly what Nigel said about pastel and cochinia. Beef and cheese are huge. I had so much cheese it was insane. Most things I tried had some cheese. Showers are terrifying. The showerhead has a heater plugged in a regular outlet and it heats water as it runs through. That shit was scary. I was hoping not to die. We went to Rio so it was really hot and humid. Humidity is so insane you can see water vapor when the AC kicks in. Places open really late so it was nice to be out late at night. That's something I never experience here in Toronto, but Vancouver has those places, so Nigel probably didn't notice the difference. Generally it's really fun and cheap when you bring your North American money. I wouldn't say it's very safe so I definitely recommend having a local to show you around because English speaking people are rare to find. I actually left my wallet at the Airbnb and just took one credit card. Man I miss fresh coconut water every morning. If you guys plan on going there I can give you a list of places to go. The sugar loaf was cool. The massive Christ statue was the highest point in Rio. But I mostly enjoyed the Portuguese royal palace in Metropolis. It's definitely worth dedicating a day for.
