Volume 1 Chapter 31: Gambling is All About Luck

"...Impossible, why would you think that I'd give up everything in this game with you!?" Even though Kokoro had already accepted her defeat, she still refused to admit that Mary's gambling skills were superior to hers.

"Even if you get the target hand, it doesn't mean I'll necessarily accept the challenge. The bet only stands when I believe my hand can beat yours!" She spoke with the fierceness of a departing villain, saying with resentment, "You're just lucky, a bit of good luck is all. Don't think too highly of yourself, you damn commoner!"

Mary burst into laughter, as if she had heard a hilarious joke. Kokoro felt belittled and was about to get angry, but she saw Mary looking at her with pity.

"Huh? Do I really need to explain this to you?" Mary said casually, "Isn't gambling all about that? Only those with good luck can be winners. I won against you in this gamble simply because my luck was better. This kind of thing shouldn't need an explanation even for a beginner like me."

"You, Mary...!" Kokoro was left speechless, wanting to refute but not knowing what to say.

Mary's words had no issues; that's precisely what irritated her the most. Even if she wanted to argue, there was nothing to say.

Mary extended her hand and eagerly said, "Enough of this, just give me the money already. Besides the difference, you owe me another 500,000 yen."

This gambling match took place in front of everyone's eyes, so even if she wanted to deny it, she couldn't.

Kokoro glared at Mary with hatred but reluctantly placed one million yen on the gambling table and said, "Here you go!"

Within that one million yen, 500,000 yen was the amount Mary had lost previously.

Mary didn't care about Kokoro's attitude and happily started counting the money on the table. "I never thought I could earn so much just by winning one game..."

It was the first time she had seen this much money!

"Hmph, you're just a poor girl, getting so excited over only 250,000 yen. You really have no experience," Kokoro sneered even though she lost, feeling annoyed at Mary's elation.

"Don't get too happy just yet; it's only one million yen. You'll lose it all soon! You'll end up losing to others in gambling and become a beggar who can't even afford the entry fee!"

One million yen might have been a significant sum for Mary Mary, but for Kokoro Aikawa, a wealthy second-generation individual, it was just pocket money. She was angry mainly because she lost to someone she looked down upon, and that's what bothered her.

Mary stopped counting the money, lifted her head, and suddenly wore a radiant smile. "Actually, I'm really thankful to you, Kokoro."

"You've taught me a lot from this gambling match; I've gotten used to gambling and understood how terrifying it can be. Moreover, you've helped me earn the capital I need for future gambling endeavors."

Saying that, she walked up to Kokoro and patted her shoulder, showing a proud smile. "By the way, you can rest assured, I won't lose to a fool like you ever again."

"Mary, you bastard!" Kokoro gritted her teeth, rolled up her sleeves, and seemed ready to fight Mary fiercely, but the dealer, the girl who had been dealing the cards, stepped in to stop her.

"Who are you calling a fool? Who's the fool...?" Kokoro took a deep breath, seething with anger, "Who are you calling a fool!?"

Mary paid no mind to her and simply smiled. "So, Miss 'I don't consider myself a fool,' would you like to gamble again?"

As soon as gambling was mentioned, Kokoro visibly flinched. Even though she disliked Mary, she had to admit that she couldn't win against her in gambling alone.

Kokoro gave Mary Mary a fierce glare. "Don't think it'll end so easily. I will definitely win it back!"

She left behind harsh words and stormed out of the classroom, seething with anger. After Kokoro left, Mary didn't linger in the classroom either.

"All right, the excitement is over. Goodbye, everyone." She tidied up the money, smiled, and bid farewell to the stupefied classmates around her. She then left the gambling scene with Kiyohei and Tsuzura.

In a quiet corner of the corridor, she counted out 250,000 yen for herself and stuffed the rest back into her wallet, which she handed to Kiyohei. "Kiyohei-san, thank you so much for being willing to lend me the gambling capital."

Mary sincerely thanked Kiyohei. If he hadn't offered to lend her the money, no matter how many ideas she had, they would have been futile without the gambling funds.

The 500,000 yen was the money she borrowed from Kiyohei, and the additional 250,000 yen was the agreed-upon interest she was giving him.

Initially, Kiyohei didn't want to accept the interest, as he wasn't short of that amount of money. But knowing that Mary would insist on giving it to him, he didn't refuse and accepted it outright.

"It's nothing," Kiyohei smiled and shook his head, "I also earned interest, didn't I?"

Aside from the borrowed sum, Mary also won 250,000 yen in the gambling match, and all this money now belonged to her.

Excitement still hadn't left Mary as she held the 250,000 yen in her hands. "250,000 yen! If I were to work part-time, I'd have to give my all for a month to earn this much... I never thought I could win so much with just one gambling match."

Converting 250,000 yen into Chinese yuan would be close to 14,000 yuan, a considerable sum for Mary.

Suddenly, an idea crossed her mind. Perhaps, in this school, she could earn a lot of money through gambling...

"Mary, it's really great that you won!" Tsuzura, who had been silently following them, suddenly stepped forward with a slightly forced smile. "I'm sorry; if it weren't for me, you wouldn't have gotten into this trouble..."

Looking at her former friend offering a forced smile, Mary wanted to say something, but she sighed instead and reminded her, "Forget it, I earned money anyway. By the way, if you have money now, try to get out of the 'livestock' status as soon as possible. I'm worried that, after losing to me, Kokoro will make you do even more unpleasant tasks."

It seemed that because Mary won against Kokoro, Tsuzura now looked at her with admiration, as if she were an idol. She quickly nodded. "Yes, I will!"

It was now lunchtime, and Kiyohei suggested, "Mary-san, want to celebrate your victory?"

Mary had spent the entire morning playing cards, expending a lot of brainpower, and she was feeling hungry. Excitedly, she grabbed Kiyohei's arm and eagerly said, "Sure, let's go together!"

Just as they were about to head to the restaurant, Tsuzura stopped Mary and said, "Wait a moment. I know it may sound strange that I'm saying this all of a sudden, but Mary... please be friends with me!"

"Huh?" Mary was dumbfounded and turned her head, showing a clueless expression, "What are you talking about?"
