At the risk of drawing ire again, this is what we mean when we say this show is written through the lens of liberal optimism. Racial commentary is “not the point of Mad Men.” I get it by now. But THEY chose to center the episode around MLK and still say nothing. And yeah, the only quasi-realistic racist reaction (tepid as it was) falls on the character no one likes anyway. At least it gave Pete a great scene. If we take the expectations out of it and judge it purely on a standard Mad Men entertainment level, I like this episode. It has a lot of great character moments. Did they use MLK’s death as a plot device to set up these character moments while more or less ignoring the implications of the event itself? Well, yes.

Mad Men hugely chickened out with this episode. Much of white America *despised* MLK, and even in New York, the executives of a conservative Madison Ave firm (all of them Republicans) would not have reacted with consternation. Instead of handling this reality with honesty, they threw it all on Harry. I prefer Mad Men to the Sopranos (a frequent comparison and topic of convos) but in the handling of race, the Sopranos is infinitely superior and more unflinchingly honest. There has really never been anything like it.

There were downpours in Memphis the entire week, as well as the night before MLK's murder, that almost flooded the city. He delivered his last speech, "Ive Been to the Mountaintop" that night.

His line delivery makes me unable to truly stay angry at him for long he’s just too iconic

I don't think Henry doesn't understand the context, he says "they're gonna burn down the city" after the news breaks so he certainly doesn't think people are rioting for no reason. Also remember the two parties used to be a lot more similar (despite what a lot of Americans say currently about the two parties being the same and both serving corporate interests or whatever; politics has become increasingly divided to the point of living in two distinct realities).

- I feel like everyone always misreads the Peggy and Abe scene and thinks it's showing a disconnect between them. There are obviously many signs of their disagreements, but that was not the reason for her reaction. Peggy is clearly smiling the entire scene from the moment that Abe mentions kids. It's when she thought he was proposing all over again, yes Peggy cares about her career and being independent but at the end of the day she was raised to want certain things and she is insecure when it comes to her love life, so a man expressing in any way that he wants a future with her is going to have her smitten. - Abe wasn't dismissing Peggy's talk of the apartment, he feels awkward talking about it or giving his input because she's the one paying for it due to making more money than him. - Milena saying she shipped Peggy with Stan since Season 3? Well, at the very least it's impressive considering Stan wasn't a character until S4... - I forgot how much I love the moment of Bobby saying he's scared for Henry. What a well-deserved gut punch to Don's self-esteem. - Also I love Betty's melodramatic "Why are you destroying this house!?". Still rocking the black hair. - The fact that you just know Don was considering going to D.C. because he was worried about Sylvia is so funny to me - Peggy's secretary wanting a hug and Peggy being like "um ok..." contrasted with Joan thinking Dawn wants a hug and Dawn being like "um ok..." lol! That Joan scene is in my top 5 Mad Men cringe/awkward scenes for sure, I have to look away nearly every time I watch it.

One thing to point out about Henry in context of the 60s vs current times is he's a Republican / Conservative in the truest sense of the word, and maybe there is a disconnect because they're talking about American politics but if you actually listen to what Henry is saying about the protestors / rioters after MLK's death Henry also fails to understand the moment, calling them hoodlums and that sort of thing. I at least appreciate that Don can see the way Bobby tries to console the worker at the movie theatre and feel proud, and Don and Pete both have at least shown a more progressive POV regarding things compared to the rest of the cast. I think its important to keep in mind that we're watching a period piece and sort of judging things by modern standards. Don is far from a perfect person but this is a show full of complex characters, especially from a moral standpoint. The cheating is almost a cultural issue in this show since almost everyone does it. But I think the one thing thats important, especially with this show, is how one bad character trait or even a moment doesn't really define that character in general.

I think it's true that Don does go to movies as a distraction from how he's feeling but I think he's also goes there as a part of his job - he needs to keep up with the current state of the culture so the ads he writes stay present, relevant. But I think Bobby's point was more about that particular moment after the MLK assassination. That a lot of people welcome a distraction from horrific events. The fact that he says that to the black usher and we see his reaction let's us know what he's referring to. It was a very grown-up moment of self-awareness that really shocks Don which he admits to Megan later.

"They're canceling the Stanley Cup playoffs." Harry in a nutshell............who cares.

Vincent Kartheiser's portrayal of Pete is so fucking funny I don't understand how people can truly hate him. Did you know we were in the presence of a bona fide racist?!
