As someone pointed out on the House of R podcast, before the Empire, Saw was initially fighting against the CIS to re-establish the original monarchy of his home planet. Saw has never been incredibly politically-centered; I think the girls make a great point that he knows what he's against but not necessarily what he's for.

Joe Joe

where do you see the upload schedule, I never know what's coming out when. lol

Jonathan Guzman

Welp, with the schedule change there won't be a new Andor episode until tomorrow. Guess I've no other choice but to rewatch every episode up until this point...

Vidolin

I agree with you that the Republic is not the solution. Wich is my only criticism of Saw’s speech. While I do believe that some rebels would want the Republic to return, Saw would not be one of them.

BigJo H

Totally agree. I had an internal debate over if I should suggest my wife to see Rogue One just before the last episode ... but she hasen't seen the first episode yet :P

Alberto BS

You should 100% at least watch Rogue One! It has a different tone but still focuses on the struggles of ordinary people resisting. However, I agree that I think the end of the original trilogy will most likely not be satisfactory to you. That being said, I still think it would be worth watching; perhaps just try to tap into your inner child when you watch it.

Joe Joe

Why?

menofhorror

I would not go so far and say "fail". Their execution is clumsy but the general idea and general plot lines are well thought out. And no, the dialogue really isnt that bad as you say.

menofhorror

Man this discussion had me rolling on the floor and in awe over how much Milena and Lola can read from characters. After Andor Star Wars is a hard switch up especially the OG six movies and Rogue One are pure kitsch, but hearing them talk about the context made me so hyped and honestly thinking they might enjoy the sequels with the context just as the action packed breather they are. Also thinking back to Saws backstory and how well this Show encapsules it in this end scene was a great feeling. Imo he is THE rebel, fighting evil without regard for labels and loyalty. I wish Disney would make a new series paralleling the Clone Wars but with less focus on the Jedi and more on the political and social events like in the Padme+Tekla arc, highlighting Republic and Seperatist similarities like the dread through the water rationing on the lower levels of Corousant as a result of military investments.

PudelNudel

One thing that is not a spoiler and i believe you should keep in mind, is that although you are watching the story of Cassian Andor in it's correct narrative order (meaning first the show and then Rogue one), you should keep in mind that emotionally, the creator of the show made Andor work as an actual ending to the story. So some things will hit you differently than other fans who first watched the movie and then the show. Admittedly he did his best to make the ending of the show work as both an ending to the story emotionally, but also work as a middle point narratively , but it might feel a little strange to you.

AlexBoss

Here's what I'll say about the movies: in comparison to the original trilogy, the prequels have much more complex themes woven in. However, the movies completely fail in execution. Any interesting exploration of their ideas is ruined by flat acting, bad humor, TERRIBLE dialogue, poor plotting, and intolerable pacing. The original trilogy is very simple mythic storytelling. It's the literal prototypical hero's journey in every way, but it is executed to perfection. They're not as deep in their themes, but the original trilogy is a lot more fun and satisfying narrative experience.

kevin coleman

If you guys want to watch more Star Wars after Andor & Rogue One (the movie) - I would recommend The Mandalorian. The first 2 seasons are great - season 3 isn't as good but I think you'll still enjoy the show overall.

Yic17

Forest Whittaker… wow

harrison carter

I think it’d be so rewarding/cathartic for yall to see the original movies after rogue one and Andor, they hit so different after seeing Andor and how the rebellion was formed and all the sacrifice and hardship that went into fighting the empire.

Jesse S

You all need to watch the prequels. You would love episode 3.

Dan Badour

Syril: They're inexperienced, but very eager. Major Partagaz: How often those attributes align.

Clay F

last thing I will say is that you do not want to know what happens after this part of the story with the rebels and the empire concludes. Just don't bother lol

Mahni Alizadeh

also i have to tell yall the second star wars movie (Empire Strikes Back) is widely regarded as the best of all 6 movies lol. I would say rewatching the first Star Wars film after Andor and Rogue One is pretty cathartic. I'd suggest giving those movies a second chance

Mahni Alizadeh

Listening to the discussion really makes me wish the prequels were more palatable to people who aren't superfans of the Star Wars franchise because they do make an earnest attempt to analyze how a democracy slowly degrades into a fascist state. George Lucas made those movies before and during the Iraq war and a lot of stuff from those movies resonates today. Unfortunately the way the movies are written makes it very hard for these themes to resonate in a profound way, besides arguably Episode III.

Mahni Alizadeh

We’re never told this so it’s up to your interpretation, really.

SwampFox95

58:00 Lola you hit the nail on the head. Star Wars is about the cycle of oppression. Mon Mothma and the people working with her against the Empire are trying to restore the Republic. I love her character but she’s very much part of an establishment that exists in the galaxy that truly does not understand the issues plaguing the common folk. In the books and deleted scenes of the prequels she was advocating for trust in the administration and even in Palpatine until she was radicalized after she was detained over a mistake and that was her personal wake up call. It’s ultimately frustrating because the story of Star Wars technically never ends, one system of government just replaces the next and makes the same mistakes. The next bit is post-Andor spoiler territory if you are going to go ahead and watch the movies, but the summary is that’s what the sequels are about (they are bad movies and no one sane should be recommending them). The whole plot of the new trilogy immediately begins with the failure and corruption of the New Republic.

My Toasty Toast

For someone who knows all the Star Wars stuff pretty well, the whole tangent about it in the discussion is hilarious. Milena doesn't remember anything. It's fantastic that Andor works so well regardless of what you know about Star Wars. Saw's speech is one of my favourite moments in the show, so great! He was first introduced in an arc of the Clone Wars series and later appeared in other animated Star Wars series as well (Rebels and Bad Batch) as a side character. I'm not quite sure where we would have to put the time in the work camp he's telling Wil about? Strictly speaking it might not fit in the timeline the way he tells it, but who cares. As others have said you see his sister die in Clone Wars, but the enemy who kills her there is not the Empire which doesn't exist yet; Saw, his sister and their group are supported by the Jedi/Republic at that point.

Biberius Caldius Mero

"they tailored" I see what you did there :)

Michael M

I'm not a fan of setting expectations like this. Why is it so hard to not talk about the future?

Michael M

Yeah, because Rylanz learned just before that Syril was fired because of the ISB, so he makes it sound like the Ghorman front people think the ISB in particular are the bad guys to appeal to Syril.

Biberius Caldius Mero

The anger you're going to feel towards the Empire by the end of the show is going to be out of this world type anger.

Mate

I figured that Rylanz talking about the shadow government and “helping” the empire was an affectation. Trying to sound moderate and reasonable to this guy who (they think) is souring on the empire but still on the fence

Joshua Something

Funny enough Lola said she would love to see a little arc about Saw. They actually did that in the Clone Wars animated series. He appeared in season 5, Ep2-5.

Raphgod7

Nah they should not watch Rogue One before Andor finale

Raphgod7

Only an uncultured idiot would confuse a gigoran with a wampa.

Chris

I love Saw so much, and everything they've done with him since his first live action appearance. This might be my favorite monologue in all of Andor, and there's quite a few good ones.

Jah_Rule_95

I like to think the Ghorman ppl say that the emperor must not be involved in all of the horrible things happening to them because it provides them with a sense of comfort. The alternative would be the most terrifying thing ever. The most powerful person in the galaxy directly responsible for their planet’s slow undoing. Thats what makes the truth so scary, everything happening on this planet was planned in that meeting room and Palpatine for sure had a hand in all of it. Cant with this show’s writing its so good 😭

Daniel Molina

Saw is such an interesting contrast next to Luthen. Luthen is a shadow stalking the empire and people follow him because they believe in his careful, methodical vision. Saw is a hurricane of a man who grabs you by the shoulders to remind you there is no greater plan, no mythical victory. There is the fight, and nothing else. And honestly, that speech would recruit me too.

Berezant

After watching this episodes reaction, I'm convinced you two would love Clone Wars and Rebels. I don't love a lot of the first 4 seasons of Clone Wars, but the things I don't like are things you ladies would be able to talk through and still appreciate. I never considered recommending a Star Wars show that wasn't Andor, but here we are.

Eric

Make plans to watch episodes 7,8,9 and then 10, 11, and 12 in three-episode chunks...just watch them back to back to back in one sitting and then back to back to back in another sitting. You WILL be rewarded. Then before watching the last three episodes, take time to watch the Star Wars movie Rogue One (which features the co-main character Cassian Andor. The movie timeline is what happens after the last episode of this series. Oddly, watching Rogue One will NOT spoil or ruin the rest of the Andor series. The director was extremely clever how he produced this series. Despite the movie being made 7 years before the creation of this prequel series, nothing from the previous movie spoils ANYTHING. In fact, it makes season two much more impactful.

Diabetic Raider

Rhydo is short for Rhydonium. Its a HIGHLY VOLATILE fuel used to fuel starships. When they were all back in the hangar, Saw said "drinking our Rhydo in peace." In this context, "drinking" means stealing; thusly, stealing the Rhydonium fuel without rushing and unbothered because the Empire would be elsewhere in the galaxy expecting him at the false location based the lie he told Plootie. Also, Saw wanted to radicalize Wilmon by motivating him to breathe in the toxic gas. He saw the potential in Wilmon at the first meeting, but Wil was raw and inexperienced in that level of the rebellion fighting. He wanted to make Wil more of an extremist...like him.

Diabetic Raider

And ISB attendant Grymish isn't acting. He despises Syril and they really were sweeping for listening devices. Syril is the only one who is acting and playing along to use to his advantage.

Diabetic Raider

The liquid Bix was taking was Spice based. It's a drug that's part sedative, but mostly a narcotic. She's using it to sleep, but also to put her into a stupor and allow her to not think about Dr. Ghorst and the night terrors.

Diabetic Raider

That Obi-Wan Kenobi show is wasted potential for me. It's definitely not on the same level as Andor

Raphgod7

@joseph olsen - it's a rot13 cipher to protect spoilers

Yeah, I mean I am gonna mention what everyone else did, what a speech! I don't know if it's my favourite but it's definitely the most special in its excecution. I would like to point out that first and foremost this is a black speech. No wonder that it was delivered by a black actor. Its references to the work camps range to all colonial Africa, from the Belgian Congo jungle work camps to genocide in Namimbia to Angolan plantations and mines. The vibes in the end have a spiritual similarity to the semi legendary Bois Caiman voodoo ceremony at the start of the Haitian Revolution the successful slave revolt establishing the black republic in the Americas. Such a sad, but weirdly inspiring speech at that. In an episode were everyone in the rebellion is worn down and paranoid, Saw's statement is an answer on how to cope with that overwhelming burden. Acceptance and embracement, that you will burn fighting you will be an explosion one of the many that is gonna bring down your opressors, that's how you win by burning them down with you!

broken king

Here’s a sentence: the yeti on D’Qar is a Gigoran named Moroff. Not to be confused with a Hoth wampa!

Jamie

I wish people understood that saying "I don't know anything about what happens in the future" is not an invitation to tell them what happens in the future.

Michael M

Grand Moff Tarkin is a very high ranking officer in the power structure of the Empire. He's featured in the original Star Wars movie that came out about 50 years ago. Besides giving us an insight into Saw Gererra, the speech at the end of the episode also lets us know how Saw could inspire people to follow him. All through the series, my thoughts were along the lines of "Why would anyone follow this man? He's as likely to kill you as the Empire because of his paranoia." Not after this episode. If Saw had made that speech to me, I'd be ready to follow him everywhere. The year in this and the previous episode is BBY 3, or between 2-3 years before the Battle of Yavin. The entire first season took place during BBY 5, and the first three episodes of the second season took place during BBY 4. I like how they contrast the relationships of Syril and Dedra with Cassian and Bix. Bix's entire face drops with dread when Luthen shows up at the safehouse at the mere possibility that he's there to tell her that Cassian is dead. If Partagaz actually told Dedra that Syril was dead, I'd wonder if she'd have a stronger reaction than raising an eyebrow. Compare the scene in the previous episode when Cassian was about to be parted from Bix with the scene in this episode when Dedra and Syril meet after being parted (by distance, even though they were in occasional communication with each other). Warmth vs. coldness.

vinicius_rage_against_the_republica_of_bananas

"Grand Moff Tarkin" is another character in Star Wars. He is basically responsible for the massacre for which there is a monument on Ghorman. "Grand Moff" is a very high up title in the empire. You'll see a little more of him in Rogue One. I understand when they say the main Star Wars stuff won't be as interesting to them. It's honestly same for me. I enjoy some of the modern Star Wars stuff like Obi Wan and Andor more than the old movies.

JustAMeloPancake

No, they absolutely should not do that

ryany

Some context for Saw and his sister. In the series The Clone Wars we're introduced to a young Saw and his sister fighting alongside the republic in a different rebellion against a king who sided with the seperatist faction during the clone wars. During that fight his sister was killed and while Saw was already pretty unhinged and violent this was the point at which he started turning into the man you see in Andor. How he refers to the rhydo as his sister is an incredible callback to his origin for fans as it's a great reference but it also says so much about him as a person and the trauma that made him who he is.

Sverrir_Thor

No Spoilers but I can already tell ep 10 will be their favorite episode

Sam

Sincerely--you should watch Rogue One *before* you finish Andor S2. The added context will make the story much, much richer and more impactful (especially toward the end).

fox_e_crow

You’re only going to fall in with love the show more and more

BigJo H

Brother, you need to pay better attention. That's just Keef Girgo in disguise.

Mike

There are a million things to love about this show, but having Forest Whitaker on the bench to come in and give that speech is just a miracle. What a scene. Mike

The last half of this season will never leave your mind.

Michael Rashid

Best Star Wars anything since the original trilogy. One of the best shows ever.

Crawnch!

"We're the Rhydo kid. We're the fuel. We're the thing that explodes when there's too much friction in the air." The cannon fodder, the partisans, the people that get burned up and consumed in any rebellion or war or resistance. The writers had to make sure they give a character-defining speech for everyone.

JC

This show is too good and it’s crazy that it was the project that people were the least interested in when it was announced.

BigJo H

My suggestion for watch order (if you're really going down this hole). After Andor s2, watch Rogue One, then Episode 4, then 5, then go back and watch 1-3, then 6

Spilled Wine

"They're inexperienced but very eager," Syril says very eagerly without experience. This writing crew needs to be cloned and put in charge of every TV show and movie.

Michael M

Fun fact: After the show aired, the phrase "I have friends everywhere" became quite popular with protesters. People are bringing homemade protest-signs with the phrase to all kinds of anti-government protests mainly in the US but also in Europe. I also saw a video of people at an anti-ICE protest this weekend reading Nemik's entire manifesto out loud. Really cool to see the impact that Andor is having.

Jesse

So the essential element of Saw Guerra: as you said, he fights out of rage and revenge, not for an ideal to make a better govt. His methods are brutal and reckless and don’t really distinguish between military or civilian or even tangential ally from the majority of the Rebellion. The more formal Rebels try to steer clear of him because they don’t approve of his methods and think he’s a net bad for the cause by making it easy fodder for the Imperial propaganda machine

Dean

There's a phenomenon that has been described in the history of both Russian and German authoritarian politics. For Russians, it's Царь хороший, бояре плохие, or 'Good Tsar, Bad Boyars.' For Germans, it's Wenn das der Führer wüsste. 'If only the Führer knew!' The idea is the same. You're a loyal supporter of the dictator that is currently ruling your country. So what do you do when you look around you and see that dictator's government is rife with brutality, corruption and incompetence? The glorious leader can't be at fault, so all of the bad things going on must be the fault of lower ranking people in the government. The leader loves us, and if he knew what his underlings were up to, he would set everything right. I don't think the Ghorman Front is sincerely afflicted with this delusion. I think the Ghorman Front had Syril the ex-security officer pegged as a pretty conservative guy who was probably still loyal to the Empire, but who also probably holds a grudge against the ISB. In their thinking, he would respond badly to any openly seditious talk against the Emperor, but given how he was treated by the ISB in the aftermath of Ferrix he might be receptive to the idea that the ISB has gone rogue and everything bad that's happening is their fault. So they tailored their message to his perceived sensibilities. All for naught in Syril's case, since he's already in the ISB's pocket, but I still like the logic of their approach.

Nubile Reptile

Rylanz says what he does about the emperor not even knowing as part of his pitch to Syril--he's making it up to offer Syril a way to work with them without "betraying" the emperor.

Chris

So rhydo (rhydonium) is basically spaceship fuel, and saw gets a high from it as well as using it as a coping mechanism for his sister who he lost during a revolution when he was younger.

James Anthony

LET IT RUN WIIIILD

You’re here. You’re right here. And you’re ready to fight

Hugo Sinclair

"We're the fuel, kid. We're the thing that explodes when there's too much friction in the air." Yet another example of God-tier writing from this production crew.

Michael M

Welp so much for getting any work done in the next hour. :D

Hollow

I think it’s so weird for the show to introduce a brand new character Varian Skye so late into the series, I wonder if he’s going to be important later

What great timing! A new episode of Andor! I certainly haven't been reloading the page every five minutes for the last few hours. That'd be sad and desperate😅
