The Sopranos 5x01 Reaction

The Sopranos 5x01 Reaction

Comments

This is the first I'm hearing of a discord for this community. Do you know if it's a public one or a friends only type thing?

tom

Stop hating on Tony! lol

Alex Martin

Delayed only a day is excellent. I am sure you are happy. I appreciate being anxious for content, but I am sure you are not sitting their twiddling your thumbs waiting so impatiently.

Clay F

shhh.. the adults are talking

Zach D

Cowboy Bebop gets delayed every week by a day I guess

bondbond53

I'm also quietly rallying for Mad Men. Though Isaac with all due respect, I hope they haven't and don't watch that trailer. Seems unnecessary to share content of a show with them, especially if they are likely to react to it in the future. I understand people getting carried away by their own excitement but it is a little confusing considering the point of a reaction is to witness them seeing everything for the first time.

tom

I get what you mean, but the high highs outweigh the lows imo. I use to feel the same way. But after multiple re-watches, I'd consider S5 to be one of my favs. Don't want to get into details due to spoilers, but I feel this one had the best blend of dark and hilarious themes.

JG

Not unpopular to me. Every re-watch my favorite seasons change. After the last one, I put Season 5 ahead of most. Season 1 is my least favorite as it feels so dated compared to the rest of the series.

JG

no bebop :'(

YawnSong

I love that you had the same reaction of physical cringe with the Tony and Melfi's scenes as I did lmao

Axel

"Two Tonys" title reference is a good one — in the mafia context, "The two Tonys" refers to a famous killing in the 1950s in which two mob guys both named Tony were gunned down together in Hollywood. Then in the episode, there are multiple uses: -The news report introduces us to Tony B. -Tony tells Melfi about the other side to him that she doesn't know. -As picked up on by Lola, the black bear is like another Tony showing up at the house.

Abacus

also, will never forget when steve buscemi once said he never realised he was ugly until he became an actor lol i love the guy, he's hilarious but for some reason i though christopher walken was the one that appeared in the sopranos i mixed the up 🙃 i was waiting to see if they recognised him from severance 😂 my bad

sand_fl

you know you're a person of interest fan when you see the actor of simmons playing a random role of a security guy and you're still thinking 'fuck simmons' 😂 this was a funny episode but ngl, seeing tony try to flirt with melfi gives me second hand embarrassment

sand_fl

That’s Bobby! The fuck is this?

Darrach

You know, not so long ago I remember Varus used to wait in the car. And as far as I'm concerned HE SHOULD STILL BE THERE

Abacus

I thought it was Larry David

Abacus

I recall it being mine, as well, but I've only had the one watch. Tony B makes me think it still will

Isaac

Don’t they have medicine they’re supposed to take, these assholes?

Darrach

@IanJ Don’t they have a medicine they’re supposed to take, these assholes?

I'm generally not a fan of some plots and characters introduced or how already existing plot threads progressed. The way they were executed broke my immersion a lot. Again, very high highs but overall very clunky for me personally

bondbond53

I DO NOT WANNA FUCK MY MUDDER!!!

snaps

Come on, to whack a boss? Centuries of tradition here!

Gaboxxy

“Healthy as a f’n rhino this guy”-Johnny Sack

Knot

Two old fucks with glasses.

IanJ

@a. Tree I do understand what you mean. Earlier seasons almost felt like a documentary at times, it made you forget these guys were actors in a show. In season 5 and 6, not only because of the writing but also the cinematography, even though it’s still great, at times it does remind you: “oh, yeah, these guys are acting, this is a t.v show”. It’s hard to explain.

Gaboxxy

@Zach D I want to sanction a hit on Varus.

Gaboxxy

I always took it as dark humor lol. Obviously it portrays how sociopathic they are, but it’s kinda hilarious how Paulie and Chrissy were so at odds with each other and ended up bonding and making peace over killing a random dude of all things.

Gaboxxy

There is a very good chance Furio went back to being a captain in Italy, and they just told Tony on the phone “we’ll keep an eye out” while laughing at the ignorant American they vaguely remember from years ago.

Darrach

“Don’t they have medicine they’re supposed to take, these assholes?” He must have forgotten to take his brick-to-the-head pills that day.

Darrach

It is a constant theme of the series, when they fight, innocents get hurt

Mitchell

Oh man, love the sopranos from beginning to end but, possibly unpopular opinion alert, season 5 is my favorite. So excited to watch with all of you.

Mitchell

I kind of know what you mean! It’s definitely a fascinating and exciting season, but it feels more “written” at least compared to Seasons 3 and 4, where it feels more like you’re literally watching these people’s lives. This means it does perhaps go deeper and hit harder at times, but it loses a bit of the immersion factor.

a. tree

Take it easy. I was here... it's a joke.

Abacus

And S5 is my personal favorite lol but I’ve noticed with Sopranos, there doesn’t seem to be one season that’s the most favored. At least from what I’ve seen. Whereas most shows there always seem to be a clear favorite.

Tyler Jackson

Still going this asshole

IanJ

bald is beautiful

Zach D

....yes? And? Anything to add?

JBK405

Still going, this asshole

Abacus

OBVIOUSLY

Isaac

Good point. Let this season be our ad for Mad Men(shoutouts to Kara) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMkPu-NTkJI

Isaac

I'm not that big on season 5 too at first tbh, although for a more superficial reason (the colour grading for the whole series got darker starting here and I prefer the more colourful early seasons). It does have one of my favorite Sopranos episodes of all time so I can't get too hard on it.

IanJ

I love Melfi's visceral reaction when Tony crosses a boundary to kiss her: "Don't do that." Her trauma from her assault left a bruise that fades but never fully goes away, and the show does a great job at portraying that. Can't help but to wonder if clipping Carmine last season would've been the right action. Now Johnny is poised to have more power, whether Carmine survives or not, and Tony is in an awkward position. Matthew Weiner, who came on as a writer this season and would go on to become the creator of Mad Men, makes an appearance as the author being interviewed at the beginning of this episode. He and Terrence Winters wrote some of my favourite episodes of Sopranos and I can't wait until we get into those.

IanJ

Regarding Lola's question about the bear: "If it's black, fight back. If it's brown, hit the ground. If it's white, say goodnight."

Skate Eight

No ur weird wtf ur problem dude bald loser

Varus

weirdo

Zach D

Believe it or not, New Jersey does have a rather large black bear population despite being (As Carmela noted) the most densely populated state in the USA. Attacks on humans are very rare, but it is one of those things that people are irrationally worried about. When you do come face-to-face with a bear, the proper action is to slowly and calmly back away. That's it. Don't run, and don't try to frighten the bear off (Unless it is already acting aggressive). Humans aren't natural prey for bears, so unless the bear thinks YOU are threatening IT, it won't harm you. Feech La Manna, the old mafioso who was released from prison this episode and told the story at Junior's house, has been mentioned several times before. He was the one who ran the card game that Tony robbed when he was younger with Jackie Aprile and Silvio. We know he was Made in Italy before emigrating to the USA, which got him a lot of respect back before he went to jail. The man who you thought was Carmine at the dinner was Ray Curto, a capo in the Soprano family. He's appeared in the show all along, but very infrequently. He was revealed to be an FBI informant a while back, and I always point to him as the perfect rebuttal to people who talk about the "old school" mobsters who maintained The Code. Ray not only informs to the FBI, he does it enthusiastically and without the guilt or pain that we saw with Pussy or Adriana. He informs so well that nobody else ever suspects him. I love the portrayal of Dr. Melfi's attraction towards Tony. As you both noted, nobody can control their dreams, or how they feel. You can only control what you do in response to those feelings. And when it finally came the point of a direct confrontation, where Tony put her on the spot and demanded an answer, she stood her ground and said he is an immoral man who she could never be in a relationship with. It doesn't matter what deep fantasies she has, she refuses to let herself act on them. She has still acted improperly from the perspective of a practicing psychiatrist in their earlier sessions and relationshop, but here she saw the line and refused to cross it.

JBK405

The way they nonchalantly talk about it afterward is sickening.

Carlos Hurtado

The dynamic between both of you during the awkward Tony/Melfi scenes always kills me. Reminded me of the early seasons

cheech

The murder of the waiter is one of the most disturbing ones of the series in my opinion. It reminds you of how backwards and psycopathic they all are.

Robert

👀"it was Melfie's dream" -Milena

season 4

bondbond53

Controversial! What’s your favourite?

Darrach

It’s a shame Raymond Curto, long-time New Jersey captain and FBI informant, had a stroke. At least Carmine Lupertazzi, boss of the Lupertazzi Crime Family, thoroughly enjoyed his dinner!

Darrach

AJ yelling for "mommy" was the funniest thing ever! 😂

BNJ

I didn't even realize it while watching the show, but apparently the guy (or rather the actor) at the restaurant just looks very similar to Carmine. His name is Raymond Curto in the show

forces

When he spazzed out at Melfie WTF HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH LOL

Varus

Yes I agree that waiter part was really messed up they lack basic morality and empathy. The only character I like is Tony because he actually has love for innocent animals. Evil world.

Varus

Ayo real quick, can someone pass me the link to the discord? I made a new account but I can’t remember the name of the discord server.

Jack SV

Girl on right did you change your hair you look like time passed also with the sopranos world season 5 looks nice btw. And Ralphie ex looks like girl on left. Are you Mororccan?

Varus

Ngl season 5 is lowkey my least favourite and I know that's an unpopular opinion. It has very high highs but overall some of the writing seemed clunky to me. Again, it might be just my personal view of it so I'll see how the girls like it

bondbond53

Fun Fact: The guy you see on the TV at the beginning of the episode giving his take as a mafia expert and book author is is played by Matthew Weiner. He's a writer on The Sopranos and will eventually create the show Mad Med. You know, the show you'll watch next obviously

bondbond53

Lol opening shots of the backyard covered in leaves and the newspaper not brought in.....AJ YOU HAVENT BEEN DOING YOUR CHORES!!!
