Cowboy Bebop Episode 1 Reaction

Cowboy Bebop Episode 1 Reaction

Comments

while I disagree with his comment and think the Cowboy Bebop dubbed is S-tier, ofc he has the right to disagree with the choice. I find it more strange when people feel the need to complain about their complaint as if the point of a comments section isn't also to provide constructive criticism or opinion. people just cannot stand differing opinions so much they don't want to even see that they exist anywhere and would rather live in blissful ignorance.

rayman

Are you stupid? I'm paying, of course I have the right to complain.

Gabriel Toledo

some people have such a strong need to let others know they dislike something completely trivial, it's so strange. just don't watch and let them enjoy then

TheCrazyPriest

this and steins gate are the ones that i like dubbed for. i actually think deathnote dub is ok as well but mostly i can go either way

Joshua Miller

There are some I can do and some I can't. For example - Princess Mononoke is SO bad compared to the Japanese version - the actors so emotionless. But the really bad dubs make me appreciate the better ones - and Cowboy Bebop is famously good for an English dub which is why 90% of reactors are guided towards the dub when the anime audience usually always directs people to the sub.

Colin Poole

I will fully admit that I had joined because I couldn't wait for YouTube to get the rest of Arcane and was going to cancel (it's a budget thing not anything more) but then I scroll down and there is Cowboy Bebop - looks like I'm sticking around!

Colin Poole

Sorry, I can't stand english voices.

Gabriel Toledo

WATCH SAMURAI CHAMPLOO! IT HAS TO BE DONE!!!

3ternaL

@clay f, death note is such a great first anime too, I think its a lot of people's gate to the anime world, one of the strongest hooks and starts ever, if not the best.

sunshine

yeah, but those animes stand more chances in future polls; i. e Steins Gate will 100% win the next poll, but dororo or banana fish will probably never win unless you put them with other not so popular or mainstream series. Also, didnt Mob win against Steins Gate? but yeah they have done this with Violet Evergarden and Ranking of Kings I think

Lau

Sorry for replying late lol while that’s true I can also see the other anime’s that could probably win by voting been neglected over this lol but hey.. I think that has happened before I believe with Mob Psycho been picked over another anime that won the poll so they have done this in the past I think.

Jack SV

Such a classic show 🤍 Enjoy

RG MG

Hey mate, I'm just saying it's not for me. Also a heads up, America isn't the only place on earth, I did not watch it on Adult Swim.

Carni

for reactions, the dub is the only way to go. The point is for the viewers to re-experience the show as if for the first time. Most people saw it in dub since it's iconic and aired on adult swim. Just the way it is, you'll survive lol

Mahni Alizadeh

they'll figure it out eventually

Mahni Alizadeh

couldnt agree more, my top three dubs of all time are Cowboy bebop, steins gate, and deathnote. i have seen both the sub and dubs all the way through for both and they are some of the only ones where i dont believe the dub detracts anything

Joshua Miller

Honestly? You can do a lot worse than Cowboy Bebop, it’s very accessible and one of the best ever so can’t really go wrong! My first one was Death Note which is also a great pick, has a very broad appeal and hooks most people within a couple episodes. Nothing too long for your first one I’d say, something short and not a huge commitment. You can browse what people recommend, and if the premise strikes you as interesting, give it a few episodes and see if you like it!

Darrach

What is your recommendation of a first anime series for an older person who has not watched Japanese anime except for a couple of Studio Ghibli movies?

Clay F

Imagine being this offended. It's a bad accent and not how it was intended to be watched. How about you try watching it in a different dub and tell me how it goes?

Carni

Ohhh Bebop feels like one step closer to Samurai Champloo

KIMI

i just started this!

tanasia

this is mental illness

tanasia

Berserk's english VA is also amazing. And I don't know if they are necessarily better than the original, but Monster's and Death Note's English subs were also excellent, it actually made those shows feel like Western thrillers/crime dramas.

Gaboxxy

@KIMI Like I said, they were overworked EVEN by today's standards. If it's bad now, imagine back then when "crunch" culture wasn't even a topic of discussion and every frame had to be completely hand-drawn to the highest standards, with animator teams that were usually much smaller than they are now. The amount of hours those animators put in was inhuman.

Gaboxxy

I forgot how much I immediately liked Spike. What a coolguy Now it's time for me to go back and finish watching Frieren with you guys before this is over too LOL

Yarrow

Based

bondbond53

how? the aimm of this is for underrated and undervoted anime to have more chances, specially if the girls are interested in any of them; otherwise these animes would most probably never win

Lau

Can't lie. My heart sank when they chose the dub.

Marcus Cato

I support this too! And I'm hoping for Dororo. The fact that it made it into the poll and not Odd Taxi or Pluto indicates to me that they are interested in the story :D

Robert H.

My top 5 anime in no particular order are: Attack on Titan Hunter X Hunter Cowboy Bebop Vinland Saga Neon Genesis Evangelion I’m looking forward to seeing the reactions to this landmark show! Easily of the best there is, music, atmosphere, animation are all stellar throughout.

Darrach

Hmm this could backfire lol

Jack SV

so true, love them all so much

sunshine

as old as bebop is, it's one of the most timelessly beautiful and aesthetic anime there is, 90s anime direction generally can also be so evocative and soulful, evangelion, hxh 1999 and kare kano are also great examples, I'm really happy you're experiencing one of the greats of a beautiful era of animation, enjoy!

sunshine

lets gooo!! make sure to pose intelligently with a dr.pepper in hand

sunshine

same!! big love for the space cowboys

sunshine

heavy agree

John

one of the best decisions you could make

sunshine

I was sad too but as soon as I saw the bebop reaction I cheered up ngl, the day will come for steins;gate.

sunshine

hell yeah!! let's recommend it again a few days before bebop reactions ends.

sunshine

lol, good point, I guess people will consciously or unconsciously twist rumors to their liking

sunshine

it's a show that lets moments breathe, it's not strictly about the plot, like how a lot of shows just have to be advancing the plot in every moment, and that makes bebop special imo, maybe it's not your thing

sunshine

i appreciate it Lau🤝

sleepymiffi

i support this petition!

Lau

the nostalgia for me❤️ will watch this when i get home! also… petition for you guys to choose the next anime yourselves from the previous poll to replace cowboy bepop once it’s over😼 all the other anime in it were solid and i’m curious which one speaks to u guys personally the most, so the people who like underrated anime stand a chance… or in an ideal world i would love two episodes a week cuz it’s the perfect pace, i feel the same giddiness when u guys get to know different types of anime the same way frieren gets when she adds a new grimoire in her collection lmao

sleepymiffi

I am so damn happy the only direction these girls take from the majority is the poll numbers on what to watch. Because some of the takes I've read through these comments, they'd never end up enjoying or watching anything at all. I'm glad that they're getting to enjoy an older anime like Bebop, especially after a modern one like Frieren. Some of you just scream early to mid 20s, that are used to modern anime sensibilities. Which is to say, you have your dopamine receptors fried by modern anime speed.

Yami

"[...] more shows ditched the weekly episode approach." I really don't understand who thought it was a good idea to make anime like Naruto and One Piece weekly instead of in a yearly season format. The filler passages to slow down the anime so they don't catch up with the manga practically make these anime only enjoyable with filler lists/fan edit cuts. Naruto actually only has 427 episodes and even those are so bloated with filler that you could cut them down to 313 episodes (Ocean Cut / NaruCannon / Naruto Kai). Just crazy.

Robert H.

Cowboy Bebop is a show that only reveals its charm after a few episodes. In retrospect, I find it quite fitting, as every anime seems bad after Frieren. But Cowboy Bebop is so different that it could still work. I'm already thinking about what might fit after July. I think because Monster will replace Haikyuu in June, it would be the perfect time for a happy show like A Place Further Than The Universe or Run with the Wind or Buddy Daddies.

Robert H.

sooo glad you are doing dubbed. it’s like one of the only cases where I’m team dub. the english VAs are so good here

rayman

bro you’re insane Cowboy Bebop is like the best dub and almost the only anime I only watch dub. The VAs for this did an excellent job

rayman

Btw girls, if you need a site to download it in 1080p with english subtitles let me know

Lau

im excited to watch this for the first time!! Bebop is a style of Jazz that was developed in the United States! Also, the OP reminding you of Pink Panther most likely is bc of the Jazz!! haha

Lau

I can’t believe this is happening

Mahni Alizadeh

Animators are still getting worked to death today even w all the technological advances.

KIMI

"I've been killed before, by a woman" I understand you Spike

ashton

Girls, please give us your reaction to the ED next week😭

Tsunemori Kiriko

Black lagoon is another one

20 16

All time great show, not just animated or anime. Everything about it is inspired Jet is best boy

space colon

Well its my time to rewatch cowboy bebop now

Dimitris Spyropoulos

You've heard the voice actor for Spike before. He voices Amon in Season 1 of Korra.

James Long

Idk I just feel Cowboy Bebop is such a slow show

Michael Ballinger

Both are good. I think the western aesthetic fits well with the English VAs in particular but both are good.

cosmotron

There seems to be a misunderstanding, earth was not shown at all in this first episode. I think that first scene of Spike's past was Mars, and then most of the episode took place on an asteroid with a colony built on it.

J

WooooooOOOOOOO!!! I know this was winning the poll but I was still surprised to see this video today. I'm glad you both enjoyed the first episode. I actually consider it pretty mediocre by this show's standards, and I always worry that somebody will come in and not be WOW-ed since it doesn't put its best foot forward. I think it gets much better from here. To answer the question about the argument over the Original Language vs The Dub, and leaving aside my own personal preference, a lot of the argument stems from a misunderstanding. It is often touted that the English Dub is so good that Shinichirō Watanabe, the creator, has said it is better than the original. This is not correct. What did happen is that Watanabe, who is not fluent in English, gave a vague, generally positive review of the English dub that was along the lines of 'they certainly seem to be doing pretty well'. I forget his exact words, but it was the kind of neutral review that you give when you're not qualified to judge something and you want to say something nice. The normal process of rumor and people repeating it one to the next means it was transformed to "Shinichirō Watanabe says the dub is fantastic" and eventually became "Shinichirō Watanabe says the dub is even better than the original". I heard that myself back in the mid-'00s the first time I watched this show. Since I didn't know any better, I repeated it as well. I eventually stumbled on the original quote many years later, and now I know the truth. But the rumor is still circling, so there's a lot of people arguing about what Watanabe's preference is.

JBK405

If you girls like This show you should check neon genesis Evangelion another great anime from the 90s

Darlan Felix

Can't handle dub :( American VA's just hurt my hears

Carni

The animation of 90's Anime was amazing and completely hand-drawn, the problem is that animators were quite literally worked to death in those days, even compared to today. it's only in the mid 2010's that Anime started having great animation again, as digital technology improved and more shows ditched the weekly episode approach.

Gaboxxy

I very VERY rarely prefer dub over sub but Cowboy Bebop is one of the exceptions, both are good but I like the dub more.

Nina

Cowboy Bebop is one of the rare instances in which the English Dub is arguably superior to the original.

Gaboxxy

Ahhh I’m so drunk but I will watch anyways btw.. I’m sorry Steins gate bros.. I really wanted Steins gate to win.. I really did mostly for yall .

Jack SV

I've never watched Cowboy Bebop, I can't tune in for your reactions (yet), but I suppose this could help incentivize me to finally check it out.

Merfhew

Its FMAB and Cowboy Bebop that nearly every reactor reacts to with the English dub. If you think it is wooden, that is likely because you are used to the other version. Steve Blum, Spike's VA, voiced Amon in Season 1 of Korra and if you ever watched Star Wars Rebels, he also voices Zeb in that.

James Long

Interesting thing about this anime is that the scripts/storyboards of the episodes were generally developed alongside the music to a degree, with some episodes even being written after the music, inspired by it. The episodes are each called "sessions" because the creative philosophy of the show was basically that each episode is a jam session between the creatives.

Payam Sharifi

The dub is pretty wooden, to be honest.

Marcus Cato

I think at many points they will regret watching Evangelion lol but it is absolutely worth it

Payam Sharifi

Excited for a new series but I'll be wearing my lab coat for episode 1

Jason Parker

The intro slaps harder than my mother with a chancla but the outro song is also a vibe

My Toasty Toast

The best!

refo44

I'm guessing the reason why most people wanted the dub was because that's how they watched it (many watched it on Adult Swim), not because it's better. Looking at comparison videos on Youtube, the dub voice acting is harder to listen to IMO

Ron Choe

So happy for you guys to experience this show if only for hearing the music alone which is amazing

mundanelotus

Yoko Kanno is a name to remember.

Eric

This is one of the most influential animes out there, but more so from the Western exposure to anime angle. Even if you've never seen anime or dislike it, chances are you would vibe with Cowboy Bebop. It has significantly influenced Western creatives as well. Girls, please please please next time include even a more influential anime from that era which is FINISHED - Neon Genesis Evangelion. You won't regret it. That being said, let's enjoy the ride!

bondbond53

No they haven't watched Firefly yet. But It had been at previous polls for shows

refo44

Yes, the animation and direction are top-notch for an anime from that era, which is why it is such an acclaimed series to this day.

Wallas

Have they seen Firefly? Seems right up their alley being so character driven.

Marcus Cato

Yessss love Bebop! Hope they enjoy it

Mark M

This should be a fun watch. Been so long since I first went through, but I think it will be a great litmus test to see which parts they gravitate to for future recommendations.

Alex

Already the intro song is playing in my head, but it's honestly been long enough since I've watch this that I think I'm really gonna enjoy the journey again

Brogan

OMG I’m so nervous! lol. Bebop is my favorite thing ever. Keiko Nobumoto is my favorite writer of all time. She is amazing. Don’t worry about people saying it’s episodic. Thematically there is an ongoing narrative through every episode! Bebop is like a lightning in a bottle project where one of the best directors, writers, and composers in the history of anime all came together to make something truly special. I hope you all like it even half as much as I do!

YawnSong

See you, Space Cowboy

My Toasty Toast

oh, it's also about space? colour me interested. throw in a 'river tam' like character and i'm sold 🤣

sand_fl

Cowboy Bebop and Firefly belongs to the same scifi subgenre called Space Western

refo44

This is going to be one of the most interesting reactions on the channel, the first old and classic anime, a completely different vibe from anything you've ever seen here, I'm very excited. My recommendation is to always be ready to watch two or three episodes at a time if you feel like there's not much to say about a specific episode. Enjoy the journey SEE YOU SPACE COWBOYS

Wallas

I didn't know you were doing one of my favorites!!!

Marlon

Cowboy Bebop is such a masterpiece and one of my favourites, i hope you guys enjoy the show, see you space cowboy!!

edson_mo

Ahh the nostalgia :)

HenryM

Also Bebop is a subgenre of jazz. The main spaceship in Cowboy Bebop is also called The Bebop. The opening song "Tank!" by Seatbelts is piece of another subgenre of jazz called "Hard Bop" (derived from Bebop) but they add some latin-infused rythms. The composer was Yoko Kanno one of the most talent and worldwide reowned female japanese composers or our times. She created the band called Seatbelts for the Cowboy Bebop music but it was so succesfull they kept the band. This subgenre called "Hard Bop", is a subgenre of jazz that emerged in the mid-1950s and evolved from Bebop but incorporating influences from blues, soul and gospel. The most iconic Hard Bob jazz band is "Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers" The visuals for the opening are inspired by the typical opening sequences of classic James Bond movies. The ending song "The Real Folk Blues" by Mai Yamane is for me also one of the best ending anime songs from all times. "Folk Blues" is a real musical subgenre but this song is really more a mix of Jazz and Hard Rock Ballad.

refo44

well, yet another show with a weird name i'd probably would have never watched if it weren't for the reactions 😂 i don't even know what the plot is but the name reminds me of firefly so that's a good sign ps: watching this with my frieren t-shirt just to make a point https://youtu.be/KOaeDHeJ80I?si=BBR4NQcH94T5E3Ml

sand_fl

Cowboy Bebop is one of the best examples of the sci-fi subgenre known as Space Western. Other examples include scifi shows like The Mandalorian and Firefly. Additionally, Cowboy Bebop often contains numerous references to other works and popular cultural references. This episode pays homage to the modern Western film Desperado (1995), directed by Robert Rodríguez. Is not a mere casuality the aasteroid is called "Tijuana" The character Asimov Solensan appears to be inspired by Antonio Banderas' Mariachi character from Desperado, and his name is an obvious reference to the sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov. His wife, Katerina, seems to be heavily inspired by Salma Hayek's appearance in Desperado. The style of figthing of Spike Spiegel is a martial art and philosophy called Jeet Kune Do, it was created by Bruce Lee There are also some visual Star Wars influences

refo44

Bebop introduced a generation to anime. It's important to many of us in the West

Isaac

Even if I voted for SteinsGate, this will still be fun.
