Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End 1x16 Reaction

and now it’s officially friday

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End 1x16 Reaction

Comments

Appreciate the correction.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

I'm sure she has a spell specifically for removing salt from pasta sauce.

Caradoc Elmet

It's too long for the Short Anime Slot after Frieren.

Robert H.

What’s sad to me was Himmel was alive in the beginning of the series and was an old man just like this old man and Frieren didn’t tell him then how she felt and touched her life. She didn’t know at that time until he passed away. Damn it! She had her chance! 😥

Ken Drummer

What about "To your eternity"? that anime gave me almost the same emotions that Frieren gave me. About love, life and death.

Arcturus

Appreciate Lola saying at the start that she couldn't cry this episode, as it gave me a good laugh before my tears started. No way to make it through this episode with dry eyes by the end. Adore the way this show speaks to the human condition <3

Kya Colosseum

I'm with James on this. Apothecary Diaries all the way.

JagdWehrwolf

Funny hearing you compare this show to Violet Evergarden in the discussion. Evan Call's score is a good connecting point between Frieren and Violet. Your discussion about Frieren had me hoping you'd check out the Violet Evergarden gaiden movie at some point.

James Long

I recently watched Apothecary Diaries, so that recency bias has me pulling for that. Even though I want Cowboy Bebop and Steins;Gate at some point.

James Long

Your Lie in April, Ping Pong the Animation, Odd Taxi, Banana Fish and Psycho Pass would fit. They are a mix of emotions.

Robert H.

I'll always prefer something that is a mix of emotions rather than just unbearable pain and sadness. Even Frieren is more of a mix of emotions rather than just cheerful. I thought it was interesting how one of my friends described the show as having this consistent feeling of melancholy.

James Long

I'm thinking of at least two more child-depicted sexualization scenes which come later in Made in Abyss, although that's without ever having seen the movies.

Pelamis

Funnily enough, I've seen fans who don't like Himmel because he didn't confess his love for her, thus denying her that love. :D

Robert H.

@Pelamis Just one scene from episode 1: An 8 year old girl who is hung naked on a rope by her teacher to punish her... Made in Abyss is just too much, and still unfinished.

Robert H.

@yamada Short Anime. Demon Slayer is way too long for this.

Robert H.

As long as it's not Made in Abyss, which I've seen suggested and was excellent, but even HxH was almost ruined for these girls with the uncomfortable Hisoka moments (the rest of the story was powerful enough to keep these two invested) and there's some unfortunate scenes in abyss that would cause these two to never trust us again.

Pelamis

I apologize if I have missed something, but I am surprised that so few people are recommending Demon Slayer.

yamada

That is a really cool theory honestly and would be a great story idea. I only don't think it would be the case because there's so many scenes without Frieren, especially upcoming, where she wouldn't know or probably ever hear of parts of the story that we're witnessing. Still awesome though, this show is a theory goldmine.

Pelamis

Re:Zero would be a long anime. The anime after Frieren has to be 25 episodes or less.

Robert H.

Small Correction: Kraft is a monk, not a priest. He does not use magic.

Robert H.

Season 3 so far has been peak!

refo44

But if you haven't watched yet Clanad give it chance. The first part is great but the second part "Clanad After Story", it changes your life and mark you forever.

refo44

Speaking of heartbreaking and traumatizing, I'm still hoping for a Re:Zero reaction one of these days, but it'll fall into the long anime category, so probably won't be for years.

Kor of the Son

Frieren comparing how she feels about Himmel and him motivating her to learn more about humans, to Voll and his feelings towards his wife and the promise he made to her was so shocking when I first watched it, you ladies were dead on when you mentioned it was the first time we see her get this defensive toward someone that brings up Himmel and what he means to her, she basically just called him her husband (lol), to me it seems like ever since she almost lost his ring, there was a shift and even though she claimed Himmel probably didn't know what it meant, I think her knowing what it means is also allowing her to accept what Himmel actually meant to her. It's beautiful to see. Voll always manages to get me emotional because his story is simply beautiful, and I loved the callback to Kraft and realizing he used to be a hero who saved the world, but it was so long ago, no one really remembers him. It's also sad because Frieren will probably end up in a very similar situation many years from now. I also love that Kraft is now a priest like his friend was.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

Lola was right when she said Himmel didn’t want to burden Frieren, he also knew Frieren wasn’t ready for romance and accepted it. This is why He didn’t pursue it during or after their journey. He knew friendship was the most he can get out of her. Atleast he died happy when Frieren visited him in his final days. Also Old man voll and his story made this episode my personal favorite.

Jay

Dororo, yes that is an awesome recommendation. To be honest my respect to Ozamu Tezuka. Dororo and Metrópolis are just masterpiece. For me was a total surprise the creator of Astro Boy was so genius and dense. It deserves to be called the God of Manga. The other one I haven't watched or heard about it

refo44

I think Lola is the only other person I've seen openly share my opinion about Himmel not burdening Frieren. I got the exact same read

Isaac

Rainbow Nisha or Dororo was in my head :D

Robert H.

Happy Birthday 🎉🎂

refo44

Clannad After Story? Hahaha or is there any more tragic than that?

refo44

We have about 5 months between the end of Frieren and Haikyuu. In that time, could we watch the most heartbreaking, traumatizing, tragic anime there is? After that you can watch something cheerful again next to Monster :D

Robert H.

This is just a theory, but I waited until this episode to bring it up. I believe the story of Frieren is being told to us several millennia in the future by Frieren or someone who knew of our characters’ journey. One reason why I think this are the names of everything in the show, whether they are characters, locations, spells, etc, are named directly after a prominent characteristic. Himmel = Heaven, Fern = Distant, Sein = Present, etc. This type of naming is very fairy much like a fairy tale, especially German ones. Also, this episode features two heroes (Kraft and goatee priest) who were long forgotten, because so much time has passed, and earlier we saw Frieren with Old Man Voll, who, due to age and the passage of time, is having difficulty remembering his wife. Thematically, I feel like it’s subtly setting up to this story being told far in the future when Frieren’s memories of the people she adventured with are very fuzzy, and she’s using these names to both help her remember and so that these people will be remembered far after she’s gone
