yeah, you're right, and I think Carmela would've given him good advice

Ben G

Carmela was open to it, Tony just wasn't comfortable sharing with her. She asked if he was okay and he lied.

Veya

It's fucked up how nobody but the kids, or only AJ really, tries to respect Janice taking on the name Pavarti...like yeah it's ridiculous to call re-name yourself after an Indian godess as a born n bred Italian American, but it is fucked how no one takes Janice seriously, ...toxic fucking family

Ben G

I heard the other day that 80 percent of communication is non-verbal. That look on Tony's face after walking out of the diner to me was a pretty clear indication that he has absolutley no idea who to turn to for help. Then the next scene is the person he first goes to, but Carmela's just not open to communicating or was busy herself :(

Ben G

I'm now realizing why I haven't rewatched this show. My subconscious knowing how much I can't stand Janice and Livia...

Paul Walker

You can never compliment Carmella too much.

I like the quick little double entendre in the opening montage. "We'd hide from the lights on the village green." Frank Sinatra is talking about making out with girls in the park. Tony Soprano is hiding from the authorities using peoples' stolen money aka, the village green.

I liked your comments on Junior in the intro. He is an old, cantankerous, ego-driven son of a bitch, but he does have his principles, twisted as they may be. the opening montage is one of my favourites in the show. Such a great tone-setter and catching us up to where everybody is during the interim between seasons. I like how Livias eyes dart towards the viewer as the camera pans across her, almost like a fourth-wall break. And so we meet Janice. Another fantastic character to add to our growing roster. I don’t have much to say that the girls didn’t pick up on right now, but I am excited to have her finally make her debut. I love the way the show blots out the sound of conversation as Tony watches Pussy at the barbecue. The distrust remains even if Tony is genuinely glad his friend is back. As Silvio quoted in this episode: “Our true enemy, has yet to reveal himself.” Always a line I held onto when watching for the first time, even if it is originally from Michael Corleone. Ahh Matthew Bevilaqua and Sean Gismonte. A bigger pair of goobers the world has never known. I love how Sean kinda looks like a giga-chad, just a perfect meathead archetype. The last scene is basically shot in real-time, as Tony awkwardly waits around the kitchen, and then eats his food served up to him like he’s a kid. Both the intro and outro songs have a reference to the passage of time. ‘It was a very good year’ by Sinatra, and ‘Time is on my side’ by Irma Thomas. The intro is from the perspective of looking back at the time that has passed almost mournfully, whilst the outro is more of being in the present, and time being “on my side”. The show never shys away from the banality and ordinary moments of life, happy to dedicate 3 minutes of the show to Carmela making Tony pasta and reading the mail. It’s one of many moments that make the characters feel all the more real for how normal and almost ‘boring’ they are allowed to be.

Sure, I actually studied psychology. But this show and the essay I’m referencing both came out in the early 2000s.

Darrach

Just for clarity, it's Jah-niss, not Juh-neese, and yes she was the second character on that list. Everyone's going to be on the list for different reasons though so I wouldn't make any assumptions about her based on that.

Mark M

I would do anything to be these two girls's footstool! Anything!!

In the real life mafia, the majority of the time the boss is who the previous boss selects. If not, it is who the captains support. Sometimes, like with the Gambinos in recent times, people related to the previous boss take over.

Benjamin Dodds

She has anti-social personality disorder which is a spectrum. Psychologists don't diagnose psychopathy anymore, just ASPD. I believe you can have BPD and ASPD at the same time. Both are cluster B personality disorders. I personally believe Livia has all the cluster B personality disorders (incl. narcissistic) except for histrionic personality disorder.

In the flashbacks to Tony’s childhood we heard Barabara crying, unattended in the background

about Adriana, she will have her moment to appear more and will play one of the most interesting roles in the show

Janice was definitely on that list. And Tony’s mom. And well you already know why Tony’s mom was on that list but I can’t wait for you girls to learn more about Janice. She is definitely a great addition to the story. Also.. another episode with The Godfather references lol I feel at this point is the universe telling you girls you should definitely watch that movie! And if you guys ever decide to record your reaction to it.. we wouldn’t mind that early Christmas present to us Patreons and me :)

Lol the "analyze this" reference. It was a film that also had a mobster going to a therapist but was generally campier and more lighthearted and came out around the same time as sopranos (i believe sopranos was january and analyze this was march) so it's not clear if they influenced each other not. The college episode put the comparisons to rest though.

My favorite opening montage

Michael M

The very first scene with the test showed Chris cheating to get his stockbroker's license (For that stock scam they're running). The person running the test called out his name, and it showed some other guy say "here" so we know that somebody else took the test for him. Chris and those two numbskulls is essentially the same relationship that Tony has with Chris: They're too eager to move up, too excited to be "real" gangsters, that they do stupid things and make everything harder than it has to be. Tony spent a lot of time trying to get Chris to wise up, and now we see whether or not the lessons sank in and if Chris can pass them on. The film "Analyze This" that the other psychiatrist mentioned came out in 1999, and had a very similar plot to this series. Robert De Niro plays a mob figure who starts having panic attacks, so he begins seeing a psychiatrist. It came out a few months after the show started, so a lot of people were pointing fingers that one or the other was a ripoff. To my knowledge it's only a coincidence, but the similarities are definitely weird. Janice is regarded as the one who "left" because she not only moved away physically, but changed her life in ways that Tony doesn't consider acceptable. She's changed religions and now uses the name "Parvati Wasatch". Tony doesn't view that as a person exploring their spirituality, but as something weird that loser hippies do. Last season he said that "Soprano wasn't good enough for her". So she LEFT the family, in addition to leaving the family.

Janeese 😂

I'm kind of surprised she didn't say narcissist which seems like it would apply just as much to all of the things she was spouting off to him at that moment. I don't think saying psychopath would have gone over well with Tony, she may have been trying to find a lighter way to break it to him and he still flipped out on her.

Veya

thanks!!!!

I love how in the final scene, Tony is desperate to be able to have that same connection with Carm that he has with Melfi, but there’s that distance. There’s also massive parent/child coding, with Carm taking a motherly role making his food while he bashfully stands around, she even remarks when he enters the house that she ‘thought he was AJ.’ Then when they’re sat at the dinner table Carm sits rifling through the bills like an adult while he sits quietly eating.

Ending scene is quietly bittersweet. It's clear Carmela provides a sort of stability and comfort for Tony when he gets home, especially considering all of the other shit he has to worry about, but he can't seem to really communicate or emotionally connect with her here. Ending song seems to indicate he has all the time in the world to try something? Even if she's not a therapist. Season 1 was great but the future seasons are generally considered better and the writing does become more sophisticated and ambitious. The show isn't really in the original framework of the first season with the original core meant to be a movie and it really starts to expand from here on out.

Veya

Oh yeah, Janice! 😄

Happy (almost) Birthday! 🎉

Darrach

Quick note from last episode: In his essay ‘The Psychology of The Sopranos’ Glen Gabbard makes the case that Melfi diagnosing Livia with BPD is verrrry charitable, and in fact, he believes she is more likely to be a case of a true psychopath. If so, her potential smile as Tony screams in fury and anguish is all the more terrifying.

Darrach

In 4 hours it will be my birthday, so I already consider this a gift 🥳
