No. He just said she is stronger than him, and his words should be taken with grain of salt since he also said that he is on level of Knov and Morel earlier. He was speaking purely about amount of Nen aura, which is not everything in Nen fight. Also Netero was in Dark Continent, he had chances to use his full abilities, he basically just wanted a good fight and maybe not nuking the whole island. I think he truly hoped that he could beat Maruem with his "Zero Hand"

Revivizi

Nah...Netero was not as strong as he was back in his prime...He said that he cant even beat Pitou when he first saw her....He just wanted to fight an extraordinary opponet like the king before he died....

constantinos vasiliou

Netero: "I am not alone" Milena: Power of friendship? Netero: Uranium 235

I hope a poll with the sopranos as an option.

Amazing episode, and amazing reaction. so much emotion in short amount of time. Peak anime moment.

Alfredo andujar

sorry this is unrelated to this video but i was wondering since they finished black sails if they said what will be replacing it?

Mr Krabs

Togashi is back working on the manga

Really interesting to compare Youpi's explosions and his response to them to humanity's development of the Rose

space colon

And he literally used the Hiroshima as an example, even mentioned that the adversaries(USA) bombed a city and killed around 110,000 which falls in the currently estimated range of deaths in Hiroshima.

Aglio Olio

As some have pointed out already "humanity's infinite potential for evolution" and "humanity's infinite potential for malice" were written to be used interchangeably. This link i found explains how togashi wrote it in the japanese written language. This explains the brilliant writing of togashi. https://i-heart-hxh.tumblr.com/post/736110541163167744/hi-im-sorry-for-bothering-you-i-have-a-question

Aglio Olio

just read it, you won't regret it

Max__

i suppose that’s a subjective thing, i personally really like narrators in anime

Caleb Mackin

Ningen no sokosuranai shinka. The translation is correct. Ningen no = human's Sokosuranai (sokoshirenai) = bottomless Shinka = evolution

ODIS

you could be right but i also think that netero most likely believed he could handle the king and the guards and the nuke was just a last resort on the off chance that he was killed he was suprised when his first attack didnt kill the king so he was probably unaware that the king would be stronger than him

caleb

Ningen no sokosuranai shinka. The translation is correct. Ningen no = human's Sokosuranai (sokoshirenai) = bottomless Shinka = evolution I've seen versions with the other translation, and this one is the correct one, and it fits perfectly, Ron. The whole point of Meruem is that he's more evolved.

ODIS

Talk about photographic memory, Wow.

Salvatore

You're right! I now remember. Hahaha!

Kevin Inoj Perez

I believe it was the very start of Greed Island, when discussing what items could be taken out of the game, Lola wonders if a nuke could be one of the items.

Darrach

Did you know? Bungee Gum has the properties of rubber and gum.

Kevin Inoj Perez

Netero is misinterpreted as a good guy. The fact that in worst case scenario he was ready to use the nuke at the palace, taking with him Gon, Killua and everyone else for the sake of humanity Yes, but for his own selfish sake too. Hes been waiting his whole life for an extraordinary opponent to test the full potential of his powers. He tricked everyone his allies as well as his enemy's. What he did to meruem was cruel, hence his last words: Is there is a hell i see you there. He conditioned Meruem from the beginning, as to not kill him. He took advantage of whatever little good was on meruem, to use him for his own selfish reasons and then betray him. There is a huge possibility that nuking the nest since the beginning was an option. Ending the problem from its roots. But i have a feeling that netero delayed or manipulated the time for the king to be born. Also The manga translation of "Dont underestimate the infinite potential for evolution" is DONT UNDERESTIMATE THE INFINTE POTENTENTIAL OF MALICE OF HUMANS. Netero was A reckless somehow twisted individual as well.

EclipseDeluna

Yeah I was surprised to see Crunchyroll translated it as an evolution of the human race which didn't really fit

Ron Choe

appreciate some more context - as a narrator hater i was rolling my eyes at the weird expo dump after such a moment but this makes more sense (still dont fw the narrator tho)

Jackamo Bailey

"technological pinnacle and material manifestation of the insatiable human appetite for self destruction" PEAK

Jackamo Bailey

You only get to see the Bodhi’s real time speed in the movie. It’s done well, don’t undermine it. But same problem, it’s just too short. You are high on the wrong shit if you don’t wanna see more of that. That, and the 5 second cut of Netero and Meruem going ballistic in the zone. But not enough. Premature ejaculation.

SoClose

Man, these comments. Guys I love this shit and please keep em coming. Fantastic

Karabo

Oh, neat!

Karabo

Togashi is insane as a writer, how do you do that?

Karabo

Waking up on a Saturday morning to this is amazing.

Karabo

I literally laughed out loud when they said that

Karabo

If he finishes this current arc, I will finally relent and read the manga

Karabo

@21:26 Milena admitting that they couldn't predict this show is the highest compliment I can offer Togashi-sensei. He's a master of his craft who sits alone like Meruem at the top of storytelling. This stuff is just majestic and this arc is nowhere near its peak lol.

Karabo

Milena mentioning that with Nen there are no normal fights and it's true lol. That's what makes HxH so good.

Karabo

Nah you're not crazy. Both clips you guys showed looked much worse then the anime one

Jay

That's exactly what i watched before i commented, didn't pay attention to the sound design but if you showed me this clip i would've never thought that this was a movie, it looks good at best. https://youtu.be/23ewDTFmaMs?si=S-FdOpF1xr01PoWq this one makes your point stronger but still i think they did not do much improvement, they didn't even make another soundtrack it's just lazy work. I guess i'm crazy

Salvatore

"the good translation"

Salvatore

https://youtu.be/xZLwzxhU38M You're crazy. Watch that clip. Listen to the sound design, look at the 2D - 3D blend showcasing real-time speed.

SoClose

I mean the start of the next episode literally is about how humans used this bomb so idk how it didn't cross your mind my guy.

Salvatore

Except a few thankfully.

Salvatore

This comment section is just people repeating information.

Salvatore

Lola has mentioned something about a nuclear bomb even in the early arcs. Maybe it was York New or even the Hunter Exam arc. I giggled when I heard that from her and now here we are. The way Netero lost his limbs and the way he restrained himself by using one arm and one leg when he was playing with Gon and Killua in the Hunter Exam arc was *chef's kiss*. Also, the intro foreshadows the amputation of Netero's limbs.

Kevin Inoj Perez

peak x peak

Gabriel Toledo

You're right, It can be better but idk what movie you saw but that bodhisattva was not better in anyway.

Salvatore

togashi do this to tell us "malice" and "evolution" are basically the same when it is for other species. The evolution of human is equal to malice to all other species

RI RI

in the manga it is written as malice and read as evolution, it is typical Japanese language thing you can literally write some word and say,no it has another meaning

RI RI

I believe there's a translation where Netero says "Don't underestimate humanity's infinite potential for malice."

Riff Michaels

I wonder what kind of relationship Meruem would have with religion. The ability to conceptualize an afterlife or religion is (from what we know) an insanely human trait. To what extent did he understand Netero's last words? There's a good chance that's learning about hell and getting nuked in the same instant. Also, the squad is really lucky that Meruem didn't kill Netero during the palace invasion. That would have been bad.

Rare

"And for the first time in his life, the King felt fear" CHIIIILS

Wallas

Remember in the Hunter Exams when Killua said he had to "stop himself" from killing Netero? Our sweetest boy lol, isn't he cute?

Gaboxxy

This is one of my favorite episodes ever, the amount of hidden meaning in this fight, just peak tv

Wallas

I advice you to check the good translation of the last scene of Netero, it is "infinite malice of human race"

Dario Campos

The moment I started HxH, Togashi had me in checkmate...

Jay

It’s the single greatest fight in anime / manga. When it comes to the gravity of the social / philosophical commentary. But the animation / direction could be better. Wish we saw more of that part when they went ballistic. It was simply too short. Check out the last mission movie. That movie sucked because Togashi didn’t write it, but it shows you what the Bodhisattva animation looks like with a movie budget.

SoClose

I just bought all seasons of Twin Peaks and Fire Walk with Me on amazon and watched them for the first time a week ago. What a great show. Also, The Return, Part 8.

Rare

So so excited to sit down and watch this with my morning coffee!!

Amber

"What is the thing you fear most?" "The possibility that love is not enough."

Rare

I still laugh at Killua thinking he might "lose it" and hurt Netero while they're trying to get the ball from him in the Airship. This episode is an all timer and I love that they focused solely on the fight without cutaways to see what everyone else was doing.

Junkboy

something that really endeared me to this arc is the fact that, I just could not guess how things would develop at every step of the way. in other shows you could somewhat guess and maybe recognize some tropes, I remember just being floored by some twists and turns. Nothing really goes like what you think it would, its such an unique arc for me. I think i have read similar stories but none quite as this one.

Giancarlo Martinez

Remember when Hisoka told Netero he wanted to fight him during the Hunter Exams, and Netero basically just ignored him? Completely outclassed.

idoleyes

Damn I didn’t thought about the Japanese angle when it comes to the bomb lol

Jack SV

Also—the resonance of a Japanese author using the nuclear bomb as the ultimate symbol of human evil must not be overlooked.

AE

"If there is a Hell, I'll see you there" To this day one of the rawest lines I've ever heard

Kor of the Son

Im not sure how Lola took Netero's evolution statement to be positive when there's a picture of a skull behind him as he says it loll

ODIS

from I have gathered its not a mistranstalation, but a play of words of sort. He says both things in a way. i think. and there is no way to convey that in the anime, unlike the written template that is manga.

Giancarlo Martinez

I think I have said this before but Netero is my favorite character. He's enlightened. He encapsulates both the finest and darkest traits of humanity. Even his Nen ability reflects this multiple times: A goddess of mercy used as an instrument of death; Hand Zero embraces a person with unconditional love and compassion, yet blasts them with the power of a sun. And even that is oversimplifying--like Guanyin, he's a man of 1,000 faces and 1,000 hands. No one is truly simple. It's precisely that duality that makes us human, and it's exactly why his fight with Meruem is so thematically resonant. "I must make this fast, before my heart is swayed" and "When was it that I stopped being gracious, taking the hands of vanquished opponents when they bowed their heads in defeat. That cannot be the ultimate power I sought....It is fighting with all my soul against an opponent that can defeat me". These quotes really showcase the duality of Netero (humans)

David Salazar

The King fought Netero as an individual—his respect for Netero’s individual greatness was at the base of the strategy he used to defeat him (every individual has a rhythm, etc.). Yet it is that recognition of Netero’s individuality that also defeated him. The King thought he was fighting Netero; in reality he was fighting humanity. The King was mistaken to believe that he, and only he, could be an avatar of his species. He was mistaken, in other words, to believe that humanity only existed as a series of individuals rather than a collective. He was mistaken to believe that humanity wasn’t a species. Indeed, the King completely misunderstood both Netero and himself. Perhaps the King had forgotten that he was not fighting Netero for the sake of the Chimera Ants; he was fighting to learn his name. There could not be a more individual cause. It is fitting, then, that the King is defeated as Meruem.

AE

There was a mistranslation that really caught on in this series, when Netero tells Meruem about "humanitiy's infinite potential", in the manga it said something along the lines of "the bottomless malice within the human heart"

Adrian

I really loved your post episode discussion and how you came to the conclusion that “our capacity for evil exceeds yours” which is more along the lines of the original quote Netero says instead of “don’t underestimate humans potential for evolution”.

Deathonater5

Yeah you really said it all in the discussion. One of the best episodes of ANY anime, point blank period. Your interpretation of Neteros final warning to Meruem was beautifully put. Some people prefer the “bottomless malice within the human heart” translation and maybe it’s more accurate, but the girls take on it shows how the “evolution” line works great also. The depths humanity can and will go… I don’t think there’s many better visual metaphors for this than a weapon of mass destruction. One great detail you only realise after watching is the two limbs Netero loses here are the same two limbs he used in the game on the airship with Gon and Killua all the way back in episode 7!

Darrach

I’ve watched HxH for a long time and it's only recently that someone pointed out to me that Genthru more than likely named and modeled his power (Little Flower), after the Rose. It was right in front of us the whole time. Pretty neat and awesome way of worldbuilding/foreshadowing.

Atoc

A very important fact about Netero's line about the infinite potential of humans for evolution. You will see different subtitles for it depending on where you watch the episode. The other version of the line is ''You have no idea.. Of the bottomless malice within the human heart''. Both of these are mentioned in the original work and are correct. So Netero basically both says to the king the ants couldn't possibly imagine how human evolution, through it's individuality, has led to humans surpassing the power of the strongest organism on earth with a ''cheap mass produced'' bomb. While also saying that only humans could have such hate and malice within them that they would create a weapon as vile as a nuclear bomb, meant to be used on their own species so as to serve their individual purposes.

Aris

It's even worse than that, as they said they could have just nuked the island from the start if they wanted. This shows that the entire thing was not even a battle to begin with, the ants didn't stand a chance ; the moment they began to be born with human traits and caught the eye of humans, their species was doomed to fail. The only thing that let them (as a species, not individual ants) live so long was politics/casualties/frontiers/damage control etc. That's why this arc has always been a tragedy from the point of view of the chimera ants as a species for me, in the end they evolved too fast and were born in a world that was already ruled by another apex predator, humans, that would never let them live

Hugehornet

ecksdee

This is my favourite end to any fight in anime. The fact it ends with a literal nuke rather than any special power manages to make the story and conflict feel that much more real. It also recontextualises everything we've seen up until this point. We won the moment Netero slapped Pitou away and got into the palace, from that point on it was simply a case of how many extra casualties were there going to be. Phenomenal writing all around

Kya Colosseum

The heart symbol is on his tshirt and was written on his wall, and is in the intro. So him doing the heart/love sign toward the king is on point :). And also the fact that he defeats him by stopping his own... too perfect.

ODIS

I always love that this whole series revolves around people aura and power, in the end it is the human mind that creates a terrible bomb, responsible for defeating the king. It's like a message from Togashi which says that the human mind is unlimited (evolution) and can do terrible things.

CsrM40

Still the greatest battle in anime history even after 10 years. There might be better animation and more hype in other shows, but nothing has topped this writing.

Globalist

Can we make early hxh uploads a regular thing please, love getting to watch this right after getting off work 🙏

Miss Mewiththat

Came here to say this, I love the double meaning there and I love how L&M picked up on that theme so easily! Basically the author intended both, which just doesn't translate into English well but the artists do a great job of conveying it regardless

Brogan

I remember a discussion a few episodes ago about the king's power that went like "what can they do against him at this point, nuke him ?". I'm sure I'm not the only one that smiled at that

Hugehornet

Can't watch immediately, but I'm just so happy you girls finally reached this episode. In my opinion definitely one of the top 3 eps of the whole series!

Kizaru

Just in time when I’m getting off work lol

Jack SV

I was waiting for you two to get to this episode. Love to see the reaction youre so invested its great. Id love you teo to watch jujutsu kaisen if you get the chance. Love the reactions keep it up!👍

Casval

just to be clear, they referenced it was popular in small dictatorships because it shows that while nen is extremely powerful, humanity’s infinite potential for technological evolution can defeat it with a low-budget bomb

Caleb Mackin

The subtitles translated it as "infinite potential for evolution", but Netero's words could also be translated as "bottomless malice within the human heart" like it was done here in the manga. https://us-tuna-sounds-images.voicemod.net/1000cacb-0e42-4314-bf31-826c100a756a-1692229555223.png This scene and panel is genuinely haunting and the implications are pretty dark but that's what makes this arc so good. Loved the reaction btw

Blessèd

Komugi lives and breathes Gungi, which is why the king couldn't beat her, her dedication is her armor. Meruem, though super powerful, gets tripped up figuring out who he is. Netero’s all about power, and his big final move changes everything. Shows that when humans go all in, even Chimera Ants with their "nen" can’t keep up with "technology", Gon is dedicated to saving Kite, Pitu is dedicated to the king.

Sam

It is here
