just a fun collection of lines that makes me want to walk into the ocean
“I'm committed to Flint. I'm committed to Madi.”
“Don't ask me to choose between a war and a wife.”
“It is some kind of hell to be forced to choose one irreplaceable thing over another.”
“How exactly is one supposed to watch two points in space at the same time?” “Practice”
anyway i love that on a more superficial and meta-narrative level, silver (long john silver of “treasure island”) can’t tell his backstory because we are currently watching his backstory happen (in “black sails”, prequel to “treasure island”)

Forgot to mention this before, but I love that Roger's ship is called The Eurydice. For those unfamiliar, Eurydice is a character from Greek myth. In that tale, Eurydice dies, and her husband Orpheus travels into the underworld to bring her soul back to the world of the living. Orpheus is a talented musician and singer, and uses his song to move Hades and Persephone (the king and queen of the underworld) to allow him a chance to rescue her. He is told he has to lead her out of the underworld without looking back, not even once, not the tiniest glance, until they have reached the top and gotten out. He has to trust that she will be there behind him the whole time, even in the dark and confusing path. It varies a little depending on the teller, but basically once he reaches the top, sometimes out of nervousness or doubt, sometimes because he thinks they are safe, he looks back. But she hasn't crosssed into the living world yet, and he watches as she is dragged back to the underworld again.
I think there's a lot to chew on there, both in terms of it being Roger's ship, and Roger's having Madi captured on it while Silver tries to save her.

If you don’t know where you know an actor from, check IMDb. They are not the same person. And to me they sound nothing alike. The man who plays Walder Frey is David Bradley and I love him. He also very famously plays Mr Filch in all the Harry Pottrr films, and he’s the recast for The First Doctor in Doctor Who.

I wonder, is the actor who plays the old pirate who sailed with Every the same who played Walder Frey in GoT? I just realized now their voices sounds exactly the same.
Unfortunately it was the Walrus, that ship survived the unimaginable but her time is sadly come :(
R.I.P. Mr. De Groot, you were the best navigator, didn't deserve to die like that T_T
R.I.P. Joji, he never spoke a single word in the entire show and didn't need to, that's a great loss too :( The only negative thing I have to say about the character is that they made him lean a bit too much into the japanese samurai stereotype, with the "mystical sound" added to his sword and he holding it backword while fighting, which is in 99% of the cases a really bad thing to do, but that's just me nit picking, it's not so important.
The writing in this show was always excelent but these final episodes are the top of the top, Flint and Silver dialogues with each other and not are perfection. Those two have the bromance we want < 3
Props to Rogers and Madi scene too, great dialogues and Eleanor presence there was the cherry on top. We see her doing crochet which is something very out of her character, she only did it in the fort because she had to play a role and her suddenly stop after Madi accusation is like a silent stab into Rogers.

Great reaction and review. The writing in this show is phenomenal. I never expected when i started this show, to find such wonderful writing, that is layered, poetic and appropriate to the time, all at once.
Since you have already seen the finale (i imagine), i can safely say that the best scene of the series is definitely in the finale. Especially in terms of writing and acting. I'm sure you agree. However this scene with Madi is also among the best of the show.
Also since you've already finished, if you read this, the ending can be taken in two different versions. One is literal, which is what the show, presents to you as the truth, while the other is more reading between the lines and layers of the show, that is based on what you also discussed here, about stories and their power. This is my favorite interpretation of the ending, despite it being more pessimistic. I believe it suits all the characters better.

This is by far my FAVORITE episode of the ENTIRE series!!!! From start to finish it is perfection. John Silver and Flint will always be my favorite relationship in the whole show and this episode is a perfect representation of why. Their relationship is so rich and layered and complex, that I could talk about them for 12 hours and still wouldn't say or convey ALL the many aspects to their relationship. I could never accurately describe them and I have watched and re-watched this show many times. One thing I will say is that I truly believe that John and Flint reached a point in their relationship where they truly became the most influential or most important person to each other, and I know that's crazy to say because of the characters like Madi, Miranda and Thomas, who were so influential in John and Flint's stories, but I do truly believe their relationship reached a level that neither character shared with another person. From the moment John said "We might be friends by then", in episode 3 and Flints smile afterward, I KNEW they were going to destroy me. The chemistry, the story, the dialogue throughout the show, ALL unmatched for me. The way BOTH men clearly love each other but feels betrayed by the other, the way Billy knew the only way to win is to separate them, the way even though Flint was disappointed in John for bringing the gold, and knew John just sent people to kill him but he STILL couldn't kill John and ended up killing the guy who was on his side just because he was about to hurt John, the look of pleading he gave John right before John started attacking, us seeing them train again and again in the flashbacks and how gentle Flint was in the flashback when he confronted John about lying to him, the fear in John when he told Flint he did not want Flint to know his history, because he felt Flint might think less of him. Just amazing!!!! I could write essays about their relationship (and I kind of did lol) but John and Flint rank right up there along with Jesse/Walt from Breaking Bad as one of my all time favorite relationships. I didn't even get to the Jack and Madi and Woodes of it all which was masterpieces in their own right as well.

LM, I have a suggestion. Do you think by the end of each show you finish you can revisit you TIER LIST and add each finished show to it (during the last review)? That way that list will always stay up to date (though you might have to retroactively add the shows since you last did the list), and we'll always get a definitive rating for how much you liked something. It might even help us with our future recommendations to you! Hope you consider it. Thanks!

Madi's speech was one of the best in the whole show, and that's saying a lot considering this is full of great speeches. Finally she says out loud what we are all thinking about the Rodgers, there's no one to blame for Eleanor's death but him. One thing that also stands out in that scene is the sound design, with the sound of Eleanor's knitting working as a ticking time bomb inside Rodgers' head, and each tick intensifying with every word spoken by Madi.
Speaking of sound design, I also loved how intense and lethal Ozai's sword sounded, that thing felt like it could cut through metal

They way they cut back and forth between John and Flint's scenes was amazing, every line spoken in the past gives so much weight and meaning to their actions in the present, the last one with John and Madi talking about having Flint's friendship being the most powerful one to me. I love how their flashback ended with a stealmate, they are truly each others' match, even tho they're in different places both physically and mentally

I think what Silver says about his past is far more revealing than he means it to be. For all his claims that it doesn’t have relevance…whatever happened impacted him to the point of making him feel this way about it. He describes it in a way that implies hearing it would confirm how cruel the world is, that it is full of “unending horror”.
When we look at him in the beginning, so resistant to being part of the crew or being attached to others, or them to him…to me it’s very clear that Silver had never truly experienced love or community before in his life. So when he gets it, when he finally has love and community and it makes him feel things he never has before, he realizes how desperately he needs it. And it’s why he clings so hard to it now.

Though he clearly misunderstands what drives Madi
Isaac
2024-04-29 00:33:04 +0000 UTC

That whole scene with Madi and Rogers and the ghost of Eleanor between them is so amazing, one of the best dialogue scenes in the show (and that's really saying something). Gives me chills every time, and reinforces what a great character Madi is. As you both have discussed at length, she is not someone who would make the choice that Silver is now. Silver is so ready to dismiss this as "Flint's war" but Madi makes it clear here. This is *her* war, for all of those multitudes of voices in the past. And she is not willing to bargain it away.
There's a few other layers to the scene as well. The ghostly figure of Eleanor haunting Rogers (good!) and the clicking of the knitting needles is so well done, like each one punctuates Madi's words. As if, despite Rogers talking about hearing her voice, those sounds communicate her agreement with Madi. It also called to mind the ticking of a clock, which is a sound this show has used before. It's incredibly haunting and effective, but there's another aspect of it that I find quite interesting.
I've mentioned more than once that there's a lot of evidence pointing toward Rogers not really knowing Eleanor like he (or she) thought, and having this false perception of who she was/would be as his wife. And while this scene obviously has her using knitting needles because of the sound and how effective it is at painting the scene, I think it also speaks to that aspect. Because it's very telling that Roger's mental image of Eleanor is her quietly knitting in a corner. Does that sound like Eleanor to anyone else? Hell, we even saw her doing embroidery and that was certainly not quiet. So, why is that how he sees her anyway? Why is that the image of her that comes to his mind, when it doesn't actually fit with Eleanor at all?
Because he never truly saw her. He never has.
