I know it's one you'll be thinking about for a long time.

2024-04-27 22:17:16 +0000 UTCI love the introduction to Skeleton island as a place of myth. It reminds me of Madi and John talking on the Walrus (?) in s3e8 where they were hiding on the horizon watching the beach from a position where the ship both 'exists and does not exist at the same time'.

It’s two women analyzing the show episode by episode, and they really open your eyes to how much rewatch value the show has in seeing just how much is there, hidden or not noticed or not realized on a first watch. They highlight so much of the sincere and amazing effort that went into creating this beautiful, magnificent show. You said “this show is about stories” and it absolutely is (so excited for you to hear the ending monologue) and to better understand a story, dissecting it and peeling back the layers is so helpful. As always love your reaction and your obvious love for the show!!

2024-04-26 21:52:35 +0000 UTCOh yeah, I think it’s very interesting how Black Sails intentionally challenges the kind of story that Treasure Island is. I mentioned it in a different comment on a previous episode, but a great indicator of that is how Woodes Rogers is written. In Black Sails he is a villain, but in Treasure Island he would undoubtedly have been the hero.

2024-04-26 11:45:19 +0000 UTCYou should definitely read Treasure Island, it won't even take much time because it's farely short. I won't sell it as one of the greatest books ever written, but it's a good story, the one responsible for how we see pirates today, like the stereotyped peg-legged pirate with a parrot on his shoulder or even the "bury the treasure" trope. I read the book after watching the show and I liked it very much, it was nice to see what happened to (some) of the characters way after the events in Black Sails and also to read about pirates, way of speaking, costumes etc. of that era in a way closer to the reality (the book was written about 150 years after the peek of piracy but it's still more reliable than modern era depictions).

He's the beginning of Nassau, the cause of Rackham's ambitions, the one all the oldheads like Blackbeard talk up....all for Avery himself to seem so small in comparison to this even more mythical and haunting island.

"That woman has been fighting the whole goddamn world since the day she was born." Max may not wield a sword like Anne, but she's a fighter too. She just uses different weapons.
