With this episode Billy's train left for me too. As many others wrote, I understand his hate for Flint, but that was just a dumb move and his motivations are not as "pure" as they were before. - "I gave you both of you a place to stand here, I gave you a life and you repaid me by conspiring with my enemies." I WOULD agree with that, if it wasn't for the fact that she has to thank Flint, Silver, Rackam, Anne and many others for everything she has right now, and yet now she sided with their enemies. Survival instinct, I can understand that, greed too, fair enough. But don't go around lecture them about loyalty and act all spited when you did the same.

So much has happened, his hatred of Flint has been boiling up for three seasons now, that it was inevitable that it would boil over at an inopportune moment and yet it was still the most inopportune of all inopportune moments for it to happen. It's not just the death of the individual fighters who are shot, it's the death of all of their disparate hopes and dreams. All of it, dead in one moment. "We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately."

It’s just like when Dufresne started his mutiny against Flint at the most critical point of the Urca operation. A lot of people died because Billy couldn’t see the mission through

I understand where Billy is coming from, he has every reason to hate Flint, retreating from an operation he probably spent months planning wasn't easy for him, and Flint undermining him was probably the last straw. He acted on pure emotion and made a very dumb decision, still I don't hate him

Also, I love this echo through so many of the characters of…loving in spite of betrayal. Anne about Max, Vane about Eleanor, and even Teach about Vane. Vane betrayed him (twice!!!) yet here Teach is all the same. Love is a hell of a thing.

2024-04-05 01:02:37 +0000 UTCOn the Fathom’s Deep podcast, there’s an episode where the hosts interview Jon Steinberg, one of the main writers and show runners. And one of the things they talked about was Max’s character, and he said a very interesting thing about her. Roughly paraphrasing, but basically he said that out of all the characters on the show she is one of the only people who “doesn’t jump to violence as a solution to a seemingly unsolvable problem” and that it’s something that makes her character unique and interesting. We see that here with her intention to capture Silver and not kill him, but also in the way she generally operates. She is all about trying to smooth things over, give people what they want. I think it’s also kind of an interesting tie in to her being a former sex worker. As she once said early on, “pleasure should be shared equally”, and she brings that kind of mindset into much of her tactical moves. It doesn’t mean she’s above underhanded methods or anything, but in a show full of literal murderers (who we all love) I do truly admire how she tries to find the least violent/awful outcome as much as possible. Another good scene with her this episode is when she talks to Idelle and Featherstone, further demonstrating that she is unwilling to jump to violence, despite them going behind her back. She makes it very clear that it was a deliberate choice on her part to not reveal what they did, because she did not want them to be hung for it. And that she further secured a promise of security for any of her informants. Despite her anger at what they did, she still made moves to protect them.

2024-04-05 01:01:21 +0000 UTCIsrael Hands was indeed a real pirate, and actually was Blackbeard’s right hand man until they had some kind of dispute. This resulted in Blackbeard shooting him, just as Silver said in this episode, though we don’t know the actual reasons behind why this happened.
