I can't believe he didn't win every acting award ever for his performance here, because he deserved it.

cosmotron

Agree on both counts. Toby Stephens is so incredible in this role, but the writing is just as strong. And while s1 is still good TV, it just can't compare to how good everything else that follows is.

cosmotron

ONE OF US, ONE OF US

cosmotron

Toby Stephens' performance of Captain Flint is no joke my favorite live action performance of all time. Every rewatch of the show solidfies it. Flint/McGraw is already such a captivating character, but his acting really catapults it over the top. He sells the sadness and anger inside him so well. He IS Flint

DalyDose

It's great to see you guys give so much deserved love for Flint. He is among my top five all time favorite characters in any medium. Of course much of this is because Toby Stephens and his amazing performance, but he is also wonderfully written. One of the more complex characters of pop culture in my opinion. Season 2 is definitely a step up from Season 1, and it just keeps building and building to a ridiculous crescendo.

AlexBoss

It's funny watching her fight the stan inside her to try and deliver normal commentary. And she usually loses lol

Ninaly

Watching the Black Sails brain rot taking over them in real-time has been great fun

Ninaly

Like I said, I don’t think that automatically constitutes a betrayal.

cosmotron

She went behind his back without asking him= betrayal

I love how much Milena loves Flint. I get it. I felt the same way. #Team Flint for LIFE

Tyler Jackson

Even if I don't like the character, I really need to give credit to Jessica Parker Kennedy in this episode, her facial expressions and deliveries during all the scenes at the brother with Silver to me are among the best of her in the show. I especially loved how she conveyed the fear Max felt. Jack's line "No women" always cracks me up XD Being stuck in the brother for all that time must have drove him crazy :D Very good episode for him overall, his speech about the captaincy was very touching and I'm happy he had the chance to show his skill as both sailor and captain worth following. I love Milena's love for Flint. It's how I feel too haha so I completely get it.

I guess I wouldn't call what Anne did in S1 a betrayal to Jack. She betrayed the rest of the crew yes, but not Jack. That doesn't mean her actions didn't cause bad things for him, but I don't consider it a betrayal. A few episodes back she also said something about how she's basically always done whatever Jack asked, even if she didn't agree. Jack didn't agree with her choice to betray their crew, but he went along with it anyway as she has done for him in the past. That being said, I don't think you said anything that I disagree with either. I don't think Jack did this trying to betray Anne, and that he was trying to just do the logical thing and the thing that would help them in the long run. But that doesn't change how it feels to Anne, and that's the important part.

cosmotron

I have a more unpopular opinion here on Anne I think. Yes Jack betraying her when he had to chose between love and business really was sad and unfortunate. However Jack only got into this position because Anne went behind his back and betrayed him knowing he still would chooser Anne over his former crew. So with that in hindsight and how he’s been stuck for so long now in a brothel and had a very difficult dilemma where he had to choose between two differently important woman and he chose the pragmatic option it all makes sense I do feel bad for Anne and she definitely doesn’t deserve this but there are many prior cases where I could say the same about Jack. At the end of the day he said in this episode how he might have lost the one person he loves for this opportunity to get back out on the sea and how he cannot lose it. So it’s not an easy choice for him obviously but at the end of the day he’s a realist and he even said this would only be temporary to Anne because he would eventually be able to persuade the crew to accept her as well. Any grammar fuckups will be dealt with later today or tomorrow because I’m writing this way too late.

Melkor

Hey the flag is important we need to be scared of Jack and to be scared him he needs a scary flag.

Melkor

Cmon give Hornigold some slack he just wants his damn fort back lol.

Melkor

Best quote of the episode imo as he’s probably frustrated with woman after having been reliant and stuck with them more than all other male characters in the show for the last 5-7 episodes lol. Again this shouldn’t be needed to be clarified but I’ve got no problem with woman lol I just feel like it’s easy to put us in his mind in this situation as a guy haha.

As Lola said, Miranda is the only thing keeping Flint grounded (even if it's by a thread), and only her and the memory of Thomas could make Flint even consider going on with this plan. "What? It isn't just your words, is it? The promise of a thing hard to define and impossible to deliver..." well put by Vane, and even Flint thinks this plan has little chances to succeed, as he demonstrated last episode. But the conversation with Miranda soft him up, so to honor Thomas he is gonna try.

Gustavo

"The banner?... what's wrong with the banner?" I find it really funny how self conscious he is about his flag

HenryM

"No women" fucking Jack lmao, I thought he was gonna say "the freeing sound of the sea unveiling endless possibilities" or something like that. Also the way he speaks about his newly gained captaincy and how it might have cost him Anne... his expression in that scene is heartbreaking, I adore them

HenryM

Good episode but on rewatch it's probably the weakest one of the season. Apart from the stuff with Jack everything that happens is basically just a setup for the next episode.

Corncobtv

BTW you should probably watch 8,9 and 10 together... well 9 and 10 definitely . I mean you don't have to , but you will want to 😀

Good conversation between Billy and Dufresene. Highlighting what we have seen in this show, and what Billy himself experienced as far as how England will treat them. “We aren’t criminals. We aren’t even men! We’re animals.” Or monsters, you could say. Really great to see how that has been a consistent thread, and it contrasts with Vane’s absolute belief that England won’t come for Nassau. Though of course we also learn the circumstances of how he got free, and that adds another complication on top of all of this: they could trade Flint in return for nine pardons. “You seem unconcerned. If I understand correctly, the stakes of the upcoming vote are significant. What exactly are you doing?” “I’m seeming unconcerned.” Hahaha I love that. The rest of the conversation Flint and Silver have…I think the fact that Flint says the gold is “a priority” rather than “the priority” makes a difference to him., at least going by the look on John’s face. Haha, I forgot Silver didn’t know Max is the new brothel madam. But it’s a lot of fun having these two interact again. This whole thing started with Max and Silver plotting together over the schedule page, so any time they interact it feels quite interesting. And it’s no surprise he can take Max’s basic outline of a plan - that Logan and Charlotte ran away together - and add on more compelling details to help sell it. It’s not unlike what he has been doing for Flint already. “Any of the men? Aren’t you one of the men on his crew?” I love that Max noticed that, because she is one of the only characters who probably would have. Just a good way to highlight how perceptive she is. And we end on Eleanor, enacting her plan. Stealing keys from Vane and sneaking into Abigail’s cell to free her, though we cut to black before we actually see anything else from there. Another great episode! Really can’t wait for us to get through the rest of season two, it’s quite the ride.

cosmotron

The scene with Eleanor and Vane where she tries to convince him. She admits that they are alike in some ways, that he was right about that, but this moment again also highlights their differences. She wants legitimacy, and the stability that will bring to Nassau, but that’s just not something Vane wants. It’s something he can’t really even wrap his mind around - not because he’s incapable, but because it just isn’t what he seeks or can imagine seeking. And Vane’s idea that England will not want to try and take back Nassau…well, we have our own historical knowledge to say that isn’t true. But it’s also just wishful thinking. The idea that the English Empire would give up on getting Nassau back is laughable. I do feel for him when he holds Eleanor’s face in his hand though. She’s already made her choice. And nothing he’s said will change her mind. That’s why she kisses him when she does. It is an answer to his question, just not the one he thinks it is. Back on the ship with Jack. Shoutout to Toby Schmitz, he’s always great but I think his work this episode has shown a lot we haven’t seen from his character before. Not just the physical side of it, but the desperation to not lose what he has gained. Anyway, love the fight between him and the other captain. It’s desperate and a big gamble on Jack’s part. He knew he just had to get one good slash in the right place, and it was pretty touch and go for a moment there, but he pulled through in the end. And he managed to turn the tide in his favor as well. We also see Jack use storytelling to his advantage, lying about what the other captain had been planning to do in order to sway the men from the prize crew to his side. Seeing Jack with blood all over his face feels weird, it’s a much less natural sight than it is with Flint haha.

cosmotron

Back at the brothel, Idelle discreetly gets Max’s attention to show her what happened upstairs. Upstairs, where Anne still is. Curled up in a corner like a frightened animal. I love this whole next scene so much. The slow way Max approaches Anne. The lighting in this scene is phenomenal too, from the way it almost halos Max, to the small sliver of it on Anne’s face…it’s gorgeous. “I don’t think it had anything to do with her or him or gold. I think it had to do with something entirely different. And I understand. So I will not let those consequences touch you. I will stand in between you and them, and I will protect you.” I think there’s something particularly meaningful in these words for Anne. Everything we have seen of her tells us that she has long been the ‘protector’. Jack’s protector specifically, then briefly Max’s. Point being, that is who she was and what she did. So for Max to say that this time she is the one being protected, that Max will do that for her…it gives me a lot of feelings. And kudos to both actresses, but particularly Jessica Parker Kennedy. There’s just this slight tremor in her voice toward the end that really sells how much she means this. Love it, great stuff. Man, Hornigold seriously has a one track mind. Guy can’t think about anything else but his fort. So much so that he’s willing to challenge Flint over all of this.

cosmotron

Oh, Anne. She’s really spiraling. Adrift out at sea like Max said, feeling completely lost. And of course getting drunk doesn’t help matters either. But things get rapidly out of control very fast here, as she charges into the room that Charlotte has just left to try and get Logan to tell her where the Urca gold is. “All men betray when it suits them.” I think this says more about Anne’s overall life experience than it really does about this situation with Jack. And boy does that imply a lot. “Who the fuck are you? Some skinny little cunt without a crew?” Thing is, I think Anne has been asking herself that same thing. Doesn’t make it any easier when Anne kills him though. Logan really wasn’t the smartest, taunting the person holding a sword to his throat. It’s Anne killing Charlotte afterward that hurts more though. That one Anne seems to do on instinct when Charlotte touches her. It’s like her body moves on its own but her face stays blank. Woof. Poor Charlotte, she really deserved better. On another note, back with Jack and the other captain (Linus, I think?). The bit about how he realized that Jack is new to this is great, both because of the practical aspects, and the funny bit about how Jack is still unsatisfied with his flag haha. (Though I guess he’ll have to find someone else to design it now…) “I can see your numbers and I can see you.” Hmmm. Well, Jack’s about to prove part of that wrong. The Billy stuff is very interesting. The show once more doesn’t directly tell us the truth. Billy claims to the others that Flint tried to save him. And when he and Flint hug I do actually think that Flint is relieved to see him, though the whole thing is certainly meant to be political theater as it were.

cosmotron

Oh, and I love this tiny scene with Flint and Miranda as well. Where he thanks her for getting Eleanor to break up the fight between him and Vane. You can tell he feels bad about the way their last interaction ended. I hate when Eleanor’s dad makes a good point. I do like what Eleanor says when she comes back though. She tries to claim that Vane agreed, but then makes it clear that she is simply making this deal happen no matter what. “He agreed, he didn’t agree, what does it matter? I guarantee I will bring the girl down the hill to you.” I do think Eleanor is making this plan in part to try and keep both Flint and Vane alive. She knows Vane’s men will turn against him, but also likely thinks he is still more probable to survive that than Flint’s assault on the fort. Jack sits down with another pirate captain, who apparently came up on the same prize. From what I understand this was a real thing that would happen sometimes, and captains would try to hash out a deal so the crews would work together. It makes sense, really, more than trying to kill each other and losing a prize anyway. Also, Jack’s exchange with the other captain is very fun. “Your ship is named after the greatest wartime defeat in history?” “I like how it sounds.” Fair enough lol And I love love love the next Flint and Miranda scene too! She reminds both him and us that she was there at those salons with Thomas and James and Ashe. She wanted this for Nassau too, even if she was more ready to abandon it in the face of the danger closing in on them. She’s also completely right about it being more likely to work if she is there to talk to Abigail. All of this is happening very much because of Miranda, her making these active choices, and I love it. “If we are to be partners, we should be partners.” I love this too. And how readily Flint agrees.

cosmotron

The meeting with Flint, Miranda, Vane, Eleanor, and Richard Guthrie is really great. Miranda’s face during it makes me rather emotional, because she is so emotional seeing Flint do this. And Flint is surprisingly honest here as well, not about Thomas or anything of course, but that he was friends with Peter Ashe and once worked to get these pardons to happen himself. There’s something about the way Toby Stephens takes in a deep breath before saying each of these things that really adds a kind of weight to it, like it’s genuinely taking so much strength for him to admit to these things, and yet it’s also like a release of that weight in a way? Ugh, he’s such an incredible actor. Vane’s reaction to this shows one of the ways he is fundamentally different from both Flint and Eleanor. “Hand me my future here in this room.” While he certainly makes points about how this is far from a sure thing, it’s also part of a pattern he has shown in not planning for the long term. Not exactly unusual considering the life he’s led, but it’s what’s consistently led to problems between him and Eleanor. She said once that she “wants a future not measured in months” and that’s just not something Vane really cares to try and do. He just doesn’t think of it in the same way. “That man starts talking and you’ll believe anything.” I mean…but have you heard Flint speak though? Can you blame us??? I love this scene between Max and Idelle. Their friendship has been a consistent background thing that I like a lot. Idelle comes in basically demanding to know why Max isn’t trying to protect herself from Anne. Anne is seemingly on the warpath, volatile and more violent than ever, but Max is unconcerned. More than that, she wants to make it absolutely clear *to* Anne that she isn’t her enemy. But what I really love here is how much Max outlines that she *understands* what Anne is feeling. That’s always been something that gives Max an advantage: she understands what other people are thinking and feeling. Not only that, but she tries to explain to Idelle what Anne is feeling, to get her to understand as well. “How would you feel if the one man you thought would never betray you did? If he purchased for himself a future through that betrayal? If you were told by a world full of men that that betrayal confirmed for them that they were right to see you as a monster to be shunned?” There’s that monster word again. This on top of the way Anne/Max/Jack was parallel with James/Thomas/Miranda, and there’s quite a few ways in which Anne and Flint are very similar. I mean, hell, despite having Miranda, I could argue Max’s next words often applying to Flint as well. “She’s not mad. She’s adrift. Alone in the most terrifying way.” Also, another great Max dress. And I love how she soothes Charlotte, getting her more comfortable. It again demonstrates how good Max is at what she does.

cosmotron

I really like how we start, emphasizing the empty bar with us just barely hearing the sounds of Vane and Flint fighting, before we actually see them. I also love Eleanor interrupting them with a gun lmao. “Had I two rounds left I would shoot the both of you and be done with all of this!” Hilarious. We also see here just how much Miranda’s words (and Thomas’s words from the past) actually hit home for Flint. He’s listening to her. He’s going to do what she has suggested. I’d kind of forgotten that it isn’t confirmed in the previous episode what he is going to do, and that’s only made clear here. Captain Jack Rackham! It’s nice to see him finally on his ship. His “no women” bit and Featherstone’s reaction is funny. Though I do have to point out that in his high spirits Jack doesn’t seem to have realized exactly how much his actions have shaken Anne. For all that he knows her well, there are many parts of her he seems to fundamentally not understand, such as back in s1 when he didn’t realize how much the situation with Max would bother Anne. Still, it’s satisfying to see him knowing what he is doing. He was left scrambling caring for the brothel by himself, unsure of how to secure a crew, but actually out on the ship he seems to know a lot more of what he is doing. Billy returns! I really like the slow walk, and how all of the crew rushes up to him. It’s been made clear many times that they genuinely care about Billy, so seeing him basically return from the dead is like a miracle to them.

cosmotron

While not as ‘big’ as the previous episode in terms of reveals, this is still another excellent one with lots to talk about. In particular, while last episode was very Flint focused, this one feels like it is for Jack, Anne, and Max. And I really love all three characters and what this episode does for them!
