Black Sails 2x05 Full Reaction

The discussion cannot come soon enough

My Toasty Toast

I feel the exact same way, on all counts.

to declare war on one of the most destructive empires in human history on behalf of your lover because that government wrongfully deemed your love as shameful is such a tragically compelling premise. such a great character and episode! excited for the review later

The face acting from Toby at 32:00 is PHENOMENAL!! It’s just micro-expressions but you can literally see his face change from James to Flint in those couple seconds.

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

One more thing: I love the lighting that is used during the scenes of James and Thomas being intimate. Laughing and reading together, being in bed. It’s made so lovely, and feels like such a deliberate contrast to how Hennessey described what they were doing. This beautiful thing was what they considered to be so “loathsome”.

Also, shoutout to the score this episode. Just so haunting and lovely at the same time. Bear Mcreary is amazing.

Yep, that was basically the amount of tears I was expecting (I cry every time too). Can't wait to listen to the discussion tomorrow.

Miranda makes me so sad in this episode. She tried to warn Thomas and James so many times, and they didn't listen to her (not that I blame them either). That's why Flint's words to her at the end hurt so much.

"No one is gonna die here, it's fine" 😂😂

this was THE episode i was waiting for you guys to react to once you guys announced you were doing black sails. so excited. i love when shows reveal something and it makes everything that comes before it even more meaningful in context.

Having now watched the reaction at 3 am, can I just say re-watching this show alongside you both has been an absolute joy. Black Sails is my favourite tv show and to see you both pay such close attention to the details and to go so far even that you picked up on the James/Thomas of it all. Every new Black Sails reaction fills me with so much joy. I cannot wait to watch the edited version tomorrow to hear your thoughts.

3:53 here and i work tomorrow. my eyes are all red from crying lol i may not exactly remember everything but damn if i can forget that scene. i was surprised you realised more or less what the relationship was about so soon. i don't remember when i started suspecting it when i watched for the first time tbh, but i remember i was also sure they had something going on by the time this episode happened. i do appreciate miranda way more now i must say. i don't know why but i think i di not like her character very much when i watched it years ago. can't wait for the edited and tbh if i had more free time i'd probably rewatch the rest of the show again so i could know what's coming with certainty but i barely have time as it is.

Currently stayed up to watch this and now it’s 2:30 am and I’m sobbing my lil gay heart out. What a masterpiece of a show ❤️

Sure is 🥹

I also want to take a second to also highlight Flint and Miranda’s relationship. Lola and Milena mentioned already how much they love it, and I agree. It’s fascinating. This interesting blend of love and grief and understanding, but also resentment and regret. The thing which broke them is also what forever binds them together. They are the only ones who can completely understand what the other is going through and what they have lost, and as much as it hurts to be with each other…being without the other would be unbearable.

"Three months... feels like twice as long" Subtle way of saying "I missed you so much my love"

HenryM

Oh thank god! I've been waiting for this one.

funny cliffhanger right?

A little historical context. Under England’s colonial rule at the time, there was this thing called “The Buggery Act” which made sexual acts between men punishable by death. It wasn’t always. Sometimes they were simply imprisoned in a pillory for months and subjected to countless abuse, for example. Oh, and this act wasn’t officially repealed until *1967*. Secondly, Bethlam Royal Hospital was a real place, and rather infamous for how cruel it was toward its patients. It literally was nicknamed “Bedlam” (a term which refers to pure chaos if you’re unfamiliar). It was well known for barbaric practices and those under its “care” suffered horribly. People held there were often beaten, starved, forcibly fed laxatives, and often kept chained to their beds or to the wall. And that’s only scratching the surface of it.

You girls picked up on the Thomas and Flint subtext much better than anyone else I’ve seen watch this show. Most of them don’t even know about it until this episode and it takes them by surprise, but they’re left thinking “oh, that makes sense!” You both picked up on the intentional choices that were being made by the writers and actors. Toby Stephens (Flint) and Louise Barnes (Miranda) were told by the writers the truth about their relationship with Thomas. They knew from the very beginning of the show, and made specific acting choices as a result. Their conversation in 1x07 is a great example of this, and again you both picked up on the hidden meaning extremely well. Even though you got what they were talking about in that scene, I highly recommend re-watching it with your current understanding (though doing so hurts haha). Anyway, at the time this first aired, there were more than a fair number of people who were upset at this reveal. If you dig deep enough you can find reddit threads from those complaining that the show “made Flint gay” or trying to say it came out of nowhere. Every once in a while you still see people being weird about it. When the truth is, of course, that Flint loving Thomas has been baked into the show’s story and themes from the very start. Not to mention that he’s not exactly the only non-straight character: Anne, Max, and Eleanor have all had pretty significant parts of their storylines involving their sexuality. This show has always been, in large part, about those marginalized by civilization, and all this reveal does is further emphasize that fact. I remember at one point there was this viral tweet that said something along the lines of “Black Sails tricked some people into thinking it was some macho action show when really it was about gay anger all along”, and even actors from the show retweeted it. I used to have a screenshot of it saved, but can’t find it for the life of me. And while I think the show has demonstrated that it was far more than it appeared at first glance well before this point, this is the episode that truly shows how much it is committing to these themes.
