The Apothecary Diaries is completely underrated. You hear a lot about Frieren, especially simply because it dethroned Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, but TAD is so good. The only thing that makes me sad is that only the first two books of the light novel are being adapted and the other 11 books will probably take another 6 seasons. 🥺

What a lovely comment! Just so you know I'm after making a discord for us Patrons to discuss shows further with spoiler/no spoiler channels, and give recommendations to each other too. Prolly not as relevant to Violet now that the girls have the series finished, but if you plan on watching more shows with us tsune then it'd be cool to see you there 😊 https://discord.com/invite/ekRgKgwY

Recently, I read that the OST composer for "Frieren" is the same as that for "Violet Evergarden." That makes sense because, in some ways, they have similar vibes, but "Frieren" is not as sad; it's more mellow. "Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End." , was one of the most beautiful, profound, and emotive anime from this year, a real masterpiece. Perhaps it is the best non-isekai anime in the high fantasy genre. High fantasy typically refers to a world inspired by Tolkien and Norse Mythology, featuring elements like elves, magic, dragons, and dwarves (like the usual Dungeons and Dragon adventure ). I think the key concept of this story is nostalgia for a past that has gone by and will never return (and in that way is similar to "Cowboy Bebop"), but also the realization that time passes much faster than we believe. All this is portrayed from the perspective of one of the best and adorable non-human characters I've seen, the long-lived elf Frieren. This is not your typical adventure story; here, the hero's party has already defeated the Dark Lord, and we see how life continues afterward, exploring how the years pass and precious memories begin to fade. It's about the regrets of not sharing more time with our friends and the people we loved. I think Frieren might be one of the best new anime of this year, alongside "Oshi no Ko" (my favorite for the 2nd position), "The Apothecary Diaries" (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto), "Hell's Paradise" (Jigokuraku), "Tengoku Daimakyo," and "Pluto" (from the same author as "Monster"). This month, "Frieren" even surpassed "Full Metal Alchemist" as the #1 top-rated anime on My Anime List. "Frieren" is still airing; the first season will continue in January and will consist of 28 episodes.

Hey everyone! It's already evening here in my country, and it's Christmas Eve. I think it's still noon in Serbia, and by the time I wake up tomorrow morning, I guess it will be Christmas Eve in the US too. Before I head to bed, I just wanted to say a quick Merry Christmas to all of you. Although I haven't caught up with many of the live-action shows and animes LM have watched and everyone discussed here this year, I really appreciate how passionately everyone shares their deep insights into every series. It's a rare vibe that's hard to find in other communities, especially when most people seem to gravitate towards more superficial, "fast-food" content. Anyway, Merry Christmas to you all and I wish you a happy new year! (And just a little Christmas wish from me: If I wake up and see a Christmas movie post from the girls, I'll be so excited and might just jump out of bed)

Just watch the movies :D It's about 4 hours of Violet Evergarden (10 episodes) if you watch both in a row. Then you can form your own opinion. The anime has a beautiful ending, the movies give you a bit more. The first movie seems more like an OVA between episode 6 and 7, I like it. The second movie, on the other hand, is completely different, which is why fans are rather divided here. I love many elements, others I don't like at all. For some fans, the second movie took the story to a new level, for others it made the anime unrewatchable. Everyone has to decide here. But you should watch the first movie if you want more of Violet. 😊

At the beginning of the story, we see Violet at a turning point in her life. Up until this point, she was a weapon of war, a super soldier, used by the military to win battles. Now that the war is over, Violet loses her purpose in life. And without Major Gilbert Bougainvillea and his orders, she doesn't know what to do. We see in episodes 8 and 9 how dependent she was on him, how he took her in, the 10 year old girl she was at the time, tried to save her from being used as a weapon, gave her a name, raised her, taught her to read and write and tried to make her see the beauty in life. At the young age of 25, he treated her like a human being, a child, which she was. He wants to give her a future, a life without war, especially evident in the scene between him and Claudia Hodgins in the tent where he asked him to help Violet in case he died in battle. He became her adoptive father, although she clearly sees more in him. He is not only her father, he is her mother, her friend, her teacher, her mentor, her superior, her everything. He was the first person in her life who was kind to her. But apart from the love Gilbert felt for his adopted daughter Violet, he also feels guilt and remorse. When Violet follows him onto the battlefield against his will for the first time, he hesitates to give orders. Watching her fight hurts him. We see him inspecting Violet's wounds when he wants to thank her for her actions on the battlefield and, due to remorse, he has to take a few steps to suppress this feeling. We see him unable to accept Violet's thanks to him as he buys the brooch at the market in Machtig and attaches it to her because he took her to the battlefield and used her as the weapon she was seen as by everyone else. That she couldn't see herself as a human being with feelings, that she didn't question her current situation as a used weapon and bluntly followed Gilbert's orders and couldn't think about a time after the war, frustrated Gilbert, simply made him angry, but in the end blamed himself for not having shown her enough good, for still using her in the war. In the battle, in his last moments, he told her that he wanted her to live, that he loved her and showed that he was willing to sacrifice himself to protect her. Violet is completely lost without Gilbert and only manages to keep on going through Hodgins' deception that Gilbert is alive. Taking Violet to Leiden to fulfill Gilbert's last wish and command shows the friendship and trust the two shared. In the course of the story, we also see how Hodgins becomes more and more protective of Violet, and is increasingly concerned about her well-being. The anime draws strong parallels here between Violet and Hodgin's wish for a child of his own, a daughter to be precise. Violet arrives in Leiden and only manages to grasp a new goal after she hears the words "I love you" again in the post office, to find out their meaning, the meaning behind the last words of Gilbert to her. Over time, she manages to better understand the emotions of others and herself, as well as becoming more independent and following her feelings. She realizes the weight of her actions in the war and the importance of her work so she is able to carry on to make amends. Nevertheless, the information that Gilbert is missing in action causes her world to collapse. Overcoming this pain and carrying on was a difficult experience for her. Ultimately, however, she has grown into her own person, matching her name. And even without orders to continue living with her own free will, she was able to prove herself as a human being even to Gilbert's brother Dietfried, who saw her as a weapon for the longest time and developed a huge fury towards her because he blamed her for his brother's death. The fact that in the two final episodes he is confronted with the fact that she is possibly human after all, as Gilbert saw it from the beginning and treated her accordingly, forces him to reconsider his behavior towards her. In the end, he has become the person who fights the hardest for a long happy life for Violet. With this development, with all the experience Violet has gained, she can finally formulate an answer to Gilbert's last words to her. Nevertheless, Violet hopes that Gilbert is living a happy life somewhere far away, that he is still alive, although it seems unlikely. The anime manages to convey this feeling to the viewer to perfection. Since episode 1, Gilbert's disappearance and his unknown life status have been used to keep the attentive viewer speculating. In the last two episodes in particular, a hopeful viewer is repeatedly led to believe that he will show up now, but never does. We feel exactly like Violet, unable to accept Gilbert's death, that he must live somewhere, that he will just spontaneously appear out of nowhere, but he never will as with many other characters before, be it opera singer Irma waiting for her lover, be it Leon waiting for his parents to return. In many shows, the element of a missing body is used to bring the character back at a later point in the story. Here it is used to give the viewer hope for the character's return. Like Oscar, Anne and Maria, we are forced to accept the death of our loved one, to carry their love for us in our hearts and to live on and carry on. But without the certain confirmation that the loved one is really dead, we cannot, a typical phenomenon of missing persons in war, environmental disasters and tragedies. The anime stands for me as a masterpiece in its exploration of loss, hope, love and the enduring spirit of humanity, It leaves us with a lingering sense of expectation for the return of a lost loved one, much like Violet's unwavering hope for the return of Major Gilbert. Thus, as the final frame fades away, we are left with the echo of Violet's hope reverberating in our hearts, a hope that transcends the confines of the screen and resonates with the universal longing for love and reunion.
