The Wire 5x10 Full Reaction

Comments

@HeavenlyR - "Both sides are bad" does not mean "both sides are the same" - and I agree that the right is the greater of two evils in various ways.

Samus Prime

Definitely not the same on these and other major things which is real damn important but there are so many Dems who support the war economy and so many are capitalists who don’t do shit about gentrification My city has been blue for decades and we’re gentrified to shit and zoning laws have catered extremely to these new wealthy tenants. Same areas suffering here 40 years ago are still suffering I’ll always vote blue but I can say that I really don’t trust most any politician to stand by their community and protect workers rights and curb homelessness (with rare exceptions like Stacey Abrams) At the end of the day most all of them are bought and owned, Biden and Hilary have received millions in super pac money from Israel and major corporations. Most every recent Dem mayor for cities with vulnerable populations (Baltimore or Detroit or Chicago) have either been deeply corrupt or outright ignored issues related to housing and poverty and incarceration Also the DNC absolutely deplatforms radicals pushing for reform, it’s been confirmed that Bernie Sanders campaign was sabotaged by the DNC on multiple levels to support Hillary (Pelosi is totally full of it) leading to his campaign team actually trying to sue the DNC

space colon

"Both sides bad" is just a defense of the republican party in an attempt to appear woke at this point, it absolutely was closer during the era this show was made in but since then the Republican party has jumped off the deep end. No one actually says what they're the same on, are they the same on abortion? Social programs? voting rights? DACA? Student loans? Medicare? LGBT issues? etc etc etc

HeavenlyR

"the red head" lol

Dk

Facts.

Samus Prime

There are two sides to our binary system, and both of them are lies

snaps

"Help us" Republicans: "No" Democrats: "No. (heart emoji) (pride flag emoji) #blm"

Michael M

Yes, unfortunately, neither side truly cares about minorities or poor people and more people need to realize that. All they care about is doing whatever they think will get them the most votes. And this is why the problem just gets worse as time goes on. It's a sad world we live in.

Dante

What I love about this show I that it was made during a time when Hollywood wasn't afraid to criticize Democrats. There's no way this show would be made today with how bad it made the Democratic Party look. It's not just Baltimore either, just take a look at all these run down cities and you'll see that so many of them are run by Democrats. Don't get me wrong, Republicans are no better, but Democrats pitching themselves as the party that cares about minorities and poor people is complete bullshit.

BNJ

dam, last ep...i'm going to miss this...ok run it back s1e1

Ben G

i wouldnt even think he's going to live long enough to go to prison... imagine marlo going back on the street in the city where dozens of people want revenge, know he likely has a lot of cash & are not scared of him anymore

medvezhonok

Marlo's is a spiritual death. It's symbolic. He is done on the street, and the thing he cared about the most, his reputation, is in tatters. No one knows or cares about him whereas everyone knows Omar. He has to start from square one, and even then he is likely to get caught by the police if he does so.

Aj

I’m sad.

cheech

I don't think it's that Marlo isn't smart enough to become a business man, the suit and tie type I mean. If he really wanted it. It's more of him not wanting it. He loves the streets too much. If he did become terrible at business it would be because of the fact he can't let go of the streets. Also people know Marlo's reputation enough unless they live under a rock. He's not gonna have that many bodies and not strike fear. And people know. Yeah Chris and Snoop did most of the killing, but they know he gives the order. He's just having a crisis where even though he's known he's not actually talked about like Omar for instance. He wants to hear those stories about him. Out loud. That scene when he fearlessly confronts those armed corner boys is one of my favorite scenes from the episde. The fact that he got cut and almost (thanks to that block) shot in the process I appreciate even more. It wasn't a clean confrontation.

daron85

Marlo lost when he wore that LRG track with Ecko UnLimited shoes. Some off brand shit

Running red

Found Marlo's account

Mark M

Loved this so much. Thank you. Maybe consider Station Eleven next?

Phil Wu

Nah, he's done

Samus Prime

Their empathy is definitely the biggest selling point, along with their attention to detail. They're much more media literate and socially conscious than the average viewer. Second place has to go to BA Reactions which I highly recommend, and Daniel Watches did a solid job as well.

Samus Prime

STANFIELD WALKS!! Marlo wins! Unlike Stringer who went out on his own ( unrealistic and silly according to the previous plot lines ), Marlo starts out with Levy making the introductions to the business class. This will protect him from being screwed. Marlo sells the connect for 10 million where as Avon sold it to Marlo for 100K. Moronic!! It's only wishful thinking influenced by inconsistent story writing that has the reactors or anyone else believing Marlo's name doesn't ring out in Baltimore. Bubbles and Michael's mother ( drug users) knew Marlo and his crew. The East Baltimore co-op kingpins knew Marlo which means their crews in East Baltimore knew him. Marlo had west Baltimore locked down and scared. The row house murders were state wide news and the streets knew Marlo was responsible for that and on and on. By the end of his reign, everyone in the Baltimore underworld knew the name Marlo. Maybe not by face but definitely by name and reputation Marlo was well known. To think otherwise is silly based on the story as written and presented to us.

Iamgreat Now

Like I said on YT, the best reaction to the best show. It's been a pleasure! Sad it's over.

Samus Prime

Thank you for letting us watch The Wire with you guys. An amazing show.

Farbod

Thx I’ve really appreciated your comments on The Wire and YJ, chewing on the characters and writing details

space colon

I started watching full metal along with them but life got in the way and I never got back to it (I definitely should). Enjoy Vinland and BoB! Their reactions do not disappoint

HenryM

That's such a lovely comment, glad to have you here man!

TeaDrinker3000

oh wow that's a great detail

cosmotron

I've really enjoyed all your comments about this show, they've been so insightful.

cosmotron

My bad, I have it fixed now. I obviously must have had police shooting on my mind, sadly.

TeaDrinker3000

Just finished the full reaction and i am DYING for the review!!!!

TeaDrinker3000

so first just one fact i found surprising in this violent show involving cops and criminals. and thats the police only fire their weapons 3 times in the whole show. and its all the same officer... Prezbo. which just seems crazy right??... and especially where you seem him last at the end.. the montage alone is emotional but such a great choice to end the series by the showing the main character. and its not jimmy.. the main character is the city of baltimore. and in the end the city/the game is living happily ever after. with all the departments still filled with corruption, dukie and michael on their paths, and jimmy lester daniels ronnie and everyone who wants to make a difference getting pushed out.. Glad we got the bubbles win though... being from a similar city i might be a little bias towards my love for this show, but i truly believe its the closest thing to basically just showing you whats actually going on in real life...and i thoroughly enjoyed going on the journey with ya and seeing your perspective on things..

RJ Dough

I have watched this whole series 3x. It's holds up well. Mike turned into Omar Dukie into Bubbles Sydnor into McNulty Kema into Bunk Happy endings for Daniel's and the red head Naymond and Bunny and Carver and Lester and Bunk and Kima. Poor randy turned Hard. Wasted potential. Rip Omar and Bodie

PamRenea

Thx for letting me share the ride with y’all. Here’s a nice clip of Dee Dee’s story (who we saw start and end her addiction journey in The Wire — https://youtu.be/jHYAAR1fl58?si=pqSaFs5S6mFTxbn1

RIP Andre Braugher, man brought to life an empathetic and hilarious black male queer character in Brooklyn 99 and won an emmy for his staring role in Homicide: Life on the Street, another essential show based off of a David Simon book Rest in power https://www.thebaltimorebanner.com/opinion/column/andre-braugher-appreciation-homicide-life-on-the-street-JY3OPZW3D5BNFECTDKVUWV6BPI/

Hard agree, this has been incredibly validating seeing these topics/characters discussed in depth with empathy

space colon

Seeing Marlo in a suit all civilized and shit felt so weird. Also, I wish we had another season to explore Marlo's potential legal business acumen.

TL;DR Charity Link below, this show is a miracle for all it accomplishes and brings attention to The Wire’s legacy is huge and overshadows most of David Simon’s other amazing work. I’ve only seen Treme and just finished We Own This City (both of which I adore in some ways more than The Wire) but any show or miniseries he’s touched has received critical acclaim Really though the thing I’m most thankful to him for is his insistence on involving the people of Baltimore in the show, between hirings on/off camera and the real stories of the city he chose to depict, The Wire IS Baltimore without any sugar coating This is what edutainment should be, addressing the real issues present in a country or city or street corner. Showing the realities of how zoning laws and gentrification affect people, how workers are exploited, the ways in which unions are busted, the realities of police brutality, abuse of power within government and the reasons why poverty leads people to crime. Humor and grief and excitement and fear, it’s all there in ways that connects us to these characters and their real struggles Children in the US are set up for failure in so many ways, black and brown children especially have every obstacle in their path that you could think of. They deserve to have their stories told and they deserve support (link below for NBCDI charity focused on systemic change for black youth) I’m planning on reading Simon’s book that was adapted into the miniseries “The Corner” (before The Wire) in which he documents a year of a family’s lives on a Baltimore corner The family lived through hell, the mother (Fran Boyd) worked as an actress in two of Simon’s shows which allowed her to meet Donnie Andrews (the main inspiration for Omar) who she married during Season 4, a marriage many of the cast were present for! https://imgur.com/a/kGeLvvD Andre Royo’s smile lights up any room I swear smh Wanna separate the legacy of the show from Simon though, The Wire has gone beyond anything the creators could have envisioned Aside from being a platform to launch a ton of careers and bringing money to Baltimore the show has spawned SOOO many memes and quotes and gifs. The Barksdale name is famous, the orange couch from season 1 is iconic, Wee Bey’s famous gif was everywhere for several years and people still shout “WHERE’S WALLACE?!?” at Michael B Jordan (gotta be annoying af) Any time someone references “The Game” to justify Machiavellian crap or really just anything Slim Charles says is gold. Even people who haven’t seen the show say shit like “if you follow the money…” or “You want it one way…” Even Alexei Navalny recently quoted Avon before entering prison (he’s recently disappeared while within prison… am hoping for the best) https://fortune.com/2022/03/22/alexei-navalny-kremlin-critic-the-wire-prison-vladimir-putin/amp/ The show is a symbol of so many things to so many people, I don’t wanna pretend to know all of what it means to everyone I can say that the show made me love and appreciate everyday people more. We might not have people like Thorfinn or a Bartlet in real life but we have people like The Deacon (played by Melvin Williams, inspiration for Avon) who pushes Bunny and Cutty in the right direction, helping them find opportunities to support children in need We have people like Cutty’s ex girlfriend who takes extra time to help Prez understand the teaching environment to better help kids, we have Kima’s girlfriend Cheryl who understands her ex is struggling and lets her connect with their would be child in a beautiful way. Bubs’ sponsor Walon doesn’t give up on encouraging him, Mike from the Baltimore Sun chooses to write a beautiful article about Bubs, Bubs took in Sherrod and tried his best to get him into school with every obstacle in his way People with any kind of criminal history are still people and they can love and give and understand. They can give back to a child’s life Bunny is a hero to children and his community, Prez is a hero to children and his community, Cutty is a hero to children and his community, Bubs is a hero to children and his community. All of the actors are like heroes for bringing these characters to life So poetic that the show ends with Duquan asking Prez for money before he descends into his struggle with addiction and homeless while Reginald (Bubs) ascend up the staircase to eat a meal in a home with his family **************************** NBCDI is a beautiful charity focused on tackling systemic issues affecting black children Their mission statement is in the first link, eight simple things their organization is focused on bringing to black children. They have a yearly national conference in which all of their local agencies gather to discuss local and federal policy and strategies concerning their approach to systematic change https://www.nbcdi.org/eight-by-eight/ This is the link to their nationally recognized charity, plz share https://www.nbcdi.org/invest-in-the-future-of-black-children

George Floyd wasn't shot.

Gonna wait for the reaction/discussion to post a longer comment, but I'm glad I watched this show with you guys! Watching your reactions alongside my first time watch was really great, and while I'm *really really really* hoping Black Sails will be next, if it isn't I'm still open to checking out whatever show fills this slot.

cosmotron

Honestly, time moves so fast sometimes, I can't believe we are at the end of this show already.

Well, I’ve waited for this last episode to leave this comment. Excuse me if my english is not very good, but I wanted to show my appreciation for the great experience that this journey has been. I’ve been following your YT channel for some time, but just with The Wire I joined the Patreon and I’m really happy I did. This is my favorite show and I’ve been looking for empathetic and thoughtful reactions, but sadly all I’ve been finding (before you) is very disappointing attitudes: people mocking the suffering of characters like Bubbles or Ziggy, or reducing everything to a fight between the good guys vs. the bad guys, or even laughing at the situations that the kids go through. I think many here will agree that your content it’s great not just because of the reactions and the empathetic perspective that you have, but also for the analysis you make of each episode (and let’s be honest, you’re not just commenting the show, you’re making in-depth reviews that many “professional” critics would dream of doing). Truly, you have allowed me to see and understand things I didn’t, so that’s something I am very thankful for. Since I joined the Patreon, I’ve started watching Fullmetal Alchemist and I plan to watch Vinland Saga and Band of Brothers with you, so I’m staying around. Ok, I guess that’s all I wanted to express. Greetings from Perú :)

Pouring one out for the finale. I'm gonna miss this series and your discussions

HenryM

Back in season one when Bubs was teaching the undercover cop how to look like an addict, he said his shoes are too clean because addicts' shoes are always dirty. When Bubs sits at the table in the montage, his shoes are bright white.

I almost don't want to watch it because then this amazing reaction series will be over 😔 The first time I ever watched this show, over a decade ago, I credited it with making me a more empathetic person. I grew up in a conservative American household, so I'm ashamed to say I carried some prejudices and presumptions going in that deprived me of fully engaging with characters like Dee and Avon at first. It's humbling seeing two bright young people immediately empathize with these characters on a level it took me several rewatches to achieve. Thank you for doing this series, ladies. It's been an absolute pleasure rewatching one of my favorite shows through your eyes.

Mike Conlin

In this week leading up to the finale I had a big post planned, having gone through various analysis and trivia videos, to point out as many tidits on the last episode as I could. But The Wire is not just a TV Show, it's one of the greatest modern examples we have of art acting as a mirror to reflect civilisation itself, and the issues addressed there within are too important and prevalent today to reduce the overall discourse to the familiar "one of the greatest series ever made..." sentiment. So, instead, I would ask everyone to watch this. It's the video John Oliver brought out about the Police in the wake of the George Floyd murder. In relation to the systemic racism of both law enforcement and America itself, so much of what was covered specifically in The Wire shows up here that it necessitates viewing. It's not dissimilar to the credits sequence of a 'based on true events' movie, where you see footage of the real-life counterparts of the characters portrayed in the story you've just watched, so that the audience have no choice to accept that this is, in fact, real. Please, do watch it. https://youtu.be/Wf4cea5oObY?si=i36FI7OOv0W-Cayq

It was a pleasure going on this journey with you.
