"How come they don't fly away" has become so important on this rewatch with the girls. I didn't fully grasp how truly trapped everyone is. Also Herc's petty vendetta coming clutch is so random but true to character lol

I don't think Cutty was giving up on Dukie any more than Michael gave up on him when he was showing him how to shoot. It's more likely they could both tell that Dukie's heart wasn't in it, which is why the conversation moves on to what else he could be doing.

"He made another call?"
The whole meeting between Jimmy and the paper, especially the look on his face at Scott, was when this season really clicked. First time I watched it I had to pause for just laughing.

@cosmotron I'm especially partial to him saying "I need a story, I'm up", like he was buying dope or something. 😂

I think someone like Cutty would know better who is suited for combat sports and fighting than someone who doesn't know anything about it. Plus, that was never the point of the scene, anyway.

The Wire call backs: The actor that takes Bubbles blood for the AID test in this episode is the real life Fran from the Corner, also her son which the Corner was based on DeAndre plays the role as Bros side kick in season 2-3 side note the person which Bubbles role was based on died in real life of AIDs years back- that why this since is deep the Wire has a way of telling stories that blur the lines between real - entertainment

next show - The Queen’s Gambit. It doesn’t quite fit in your oeuvre but then you do have a varied group of shows you watch. If you are on the fence about a long commitment, Gambit is short (7 episodes). And it is great in Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance, story structure, art direction, and the fact that the artists behind this classic make chess competitions absolutely gripping. Humbly submitted for your consideration.

Two thoughts fight each other in my mind. 1) I can’t wait for L & M to see the last episode, and 2) I enjoy watching L/M watch “The Wire” and hope it never ends.

The storyline with Bubs is probably the one that's making me the most emotional currently. I really hope he won't have a downward spiral, especially since he still seems to feel that he deserves more punishment. Feeling like he *deserves* to have AIDS somehow, to the point where news that should be a relief gives him the opposite. :(
I don't want to discount Cutty's view, but I do wish he'd come to his conclusion after having Dukie in for more than one day. Just because he isn't naturally inclined toward fighting doesn't mean he can't still learn, and I feel like you'd need more than one day to determine whether he can actually learn or not. Like, it's not the same thing of course, but I just started taking a dance class. And I'm not any good at all. I've never been good at dancing. It's disheartening! But my teacher has made the point many times that practicing will still help us get better, even if we feel like we are bad at it now. I've only got a few lessons under my belt but I can already see small improvements, even though I'm still not good at it.
So I guess it feels particularly bad to have an adult give up on this kid so quickly. And it's not even that the story couldn't still come to the same conclusion, that Dukie isn't cut out for fighting, but deciding that must be true after watching him for a few hours feels kinda ridiculous.
I'm really enjoying the plotline involving The Sun reporters. I'm worried about what effect Jimmy's actions will have on poor Alma's career - unless maybe she will end up being integral to discovering the truth. Scott really is the worst - and somehow him acting so affable makes it moreso. Like he isn't going around being an asshole to everyone around him, but he's lying about what he thinks is a *real serial killer case* (and doing so badly at that - no way this won't come to light) and acts all affronted when he gets the slightest pushback about his lies.
I like to imagine Omar somehow doing a perfect Olympic gymnast move to like flip down into the lower apartment and just making it look like he fell lol. More likely he just rolled out of sight on the ground or something, but I love my mental image more.
Oh, and since L&M said they are still figuring out what they are doing for the next show, the next time they post The Wire I'll probably start doing my campaign for everyone to vote for Black Sails lol.

Bingo. His motivation is largely led by his own self-interest.

"But how do I get from here to the real world?" Oh, Dukie...
Omar has been brought down to earth and now knows he's not coming up against Barksdale slingers. Marlo's crew and especially Chris are a totally different proposition to what he has come up against before.
As usual there are parallels and repetition - the last words in this episode are "What the-!?" by Snoop and then by Lester. Snoop when Omar disappears after jumping from a 5th floor window. And Lester when he sees what's on the wiretap as a result of Omar's escape.....
PS: @Milena - Keep on poking Lola’s sides when she doesn’t expect it. Thank you. 😌

Really good episode.
Btw, the writer's strike wasn't the reason this season has only 10 episodes. Show creator David Simon was given a production budget by HBO for The Wire and his other show, Generation Kill, and he decided to split that budget across 10 episodes for The Wire and 7 episodes for Generation Kill.
He could (should) have used a couple more episodes this season but it's still a very good season. Also, it's a very amusing which is the tonic we needed after the emotionally draining season 4.

It's funny, I've watched this many times, and I had never considered something you guys brought up: that Scott may be fucking around with a fake case, but he THINKS IT'S REAL. He's deliberately interfering and giving false information in what he thinks is a real serial killer case. Can't believe that hadn't sunk in before

"How do you get from here to the rest of the world? "
That's a powerful line, and the way Dennis talks to Dukie and comes to understand what kind of kid he is just from watching him for a few minutes in the ring is so heartfelt. That whole exchange reminded me of one of the most important lines in this show back in season 2, "how come they don't fly away?..."
On a lighter note, score one against Marlo! all because of Herc and his beef with him over a fucking camera lol

You seem surprised that State Prosecutor Bond was proceeding to charge Clay Davis. He always intended to. I think you misinterpreted the scene between Rhonda, Freamon and him in the previous episode where he declined to proceed with the Federal case (that may have got Davis 30 years jail) and instead wanted to look at multiple smaller state cases (which each may get 10 years). His motivation in declining the bigger case was purely because it was a Federal case, and meant it would be taken away from him by the Feds. He always wanted to prosecute Davis but wants it to be a State case so he gets credit, and then can use it as a platform for his mayoral ambition (Carcetti and Norman mention this when they are watching his press conference on TV)

Finished the full reaction (great as always) but I still have yet to watch the intro and review for 5x04. Does anyone know if the girls have confirmed which film they're gonna be watching at the end of the month, assuming they're still doing that? I wanna know so I can have it downloaded in advance 😁

I love Scott asking where he's supposed to find homeless people, really exposing the fact that he doesn't know the city, has zero useful connections and doesn't know how to do actual journalistic work. He's only interested in making it big, at the expense of everyone and everything. And the 24 hour news cycle incentivizes this behaviour, if there's not something interesting happening today, make it happen. Jimmy found his mope that'll happily write a fictional piece if it means he gets accolades.

They way Scott and Jimmy were bullshiting so hard was funny lol one is feeding from the lies of the other and both get what they want from something that is made up by a drunk detective who has an obsession to capture a drug dealer. If there is anyone who deserves a happy ending is Bubs, he went through a lot and he is the only character who seems to want to change for the best. Otherwise I’m sad we are almost done with this show. One of the best TV shows out there.

The reason why they included the scene with Dukie getting beat by the other guys is because the actor got his face cut in real life from his dog before they started filming and they had to explain the bruise on his face.
