Comments

I really love your reactions, this is my favorite anime so it's always cool to see people enjoying and figuring out so much about it!

Brandon Centeno

you two have the healthiest relationship ive ever seen

Nathan Elkin

I mean, read the comments previous to mine, lol.

Komikall

Isn't this a spoiler?

Anto

I love this episode, especially the Gyro part, but I'm always confused by the music choice during those two deaths. They treat deaths so seriously all the time but chose one of the worst themes for the tone of the situation.

Anto

It was Askeladd. You hated him. I read that comment

Anto

Talk about a tone shift 😬

Space Mechanic

Gyro is a very intriguing character. I have seen a theory from some youtuber that he might be the final villain of the series, I think that would be very interesting, although unlikely.

Kizaru

This Gyro backstory was so impactful for me because it also recontextualized how fucked up the Phantom Troupe's roots were. At first, in York New, I thought of their Meteor City roots as being a very insightful but mostly a somewhat expected background for the cool villains of a story. Of course it was grim and unsettling but it was still very much part of a story. It's like how people get less outraged by killing in stories than irl. But this Gyro backstory , with it's very realistic and serious tone, has made me reevaluate the severity of the conditions that has created such individuals as the Phantom Troupe. As a result, the Phantom Troupe, Meteor City and Gyro reminded me of three of the saddest documentaries I have ever seen. Never has anything made me feel so sad and empty. The three documentaries are : -'The Children of Leningradsky' - detailing the lives of several kids roaming the railway station of Leningradsky in Moscow after the fall of the Soviet Union in the 90's and how they're pushed to drugs and prostitution because of poverty; -'Children Underground' - same situation as the previous documentary but set in Bucharest, Romania in the early 2000's; -'Something Better to Come' - it follows Yula, a Russian girl living in a Moscow garbage dump. Literally very similar to the concept of Meteor City. People live there and are sometimes bulldozed together with the trash because they're not seen as human; If you ever wanna feel blessed because of your life, give these documentaries a go but be warned that they are very tragic. It was especially impactful for me because I'm Eastern European and I know what the 90's were like around here from my parents. Anyways, that's all to say that I really, really love what Togashi managed to achieve in the Chimera Ant arc. He pulled the veil on the harsh realities of the world of HunterxHunter, which is not our own world but identical in these grim aspects. I can't wait for you girls to finish it and discuss it as a whole.

bondbond53

I'm pretty sure it's not at the end of the backstory but a bit later that that is said, but yeah I don't really think it's much of a spoiler to bring it up now. Edit: Ok I was right and wrong. It is said right after the backstory, but the backstory isn't revealed until later in the story, well after Gyro the human has been taken/killed. But yeah either way, not a big deal to say it now.

Payam Sharifi

Chainsaw man isn't an incel story what are you talking about? Denji's horniness isn't shown to be an admirable trait, it's him seeking love and connection but not knowing how to express that. Kobeni isn't sexualized because her character wouldn't want that. Makima is only sexualized because she is using that to exploit denji, and uses it as a tool That one girl who died was only "sexual" when she was making the moves on denji (gross) Power is never sexualized either

Billy Overlord

Sometimes your theories and imaginations are more fun than the actual anmie😂 you should create your own show, I am sure of its success

FFme

I think the reason they left some information about Gyro out is because the studio knew that there wouldn't really be further information about him that would be animated. So by leaving it rather vague instead of directly stating he left and could be a foreseen threat, it allows anime-only watchers to enjoy the story without lingering on his character too much with the expectation he will eventually show up. I feel like if they were going to ever continue the anime, they would add that bit that they left out when it comes to Gyro becoming relevant again. Edit: I would love to get a mug if you guys ever do decide to make one. Also, the mangaka came up with the title "Hunter x Hunter" because he was watching a show called "Downtown" where they repeated words for comedic purposes and so the name just popped in his head. I would like to believe and firmly do believe that through the development of the story, he structured the narrative in relation to the title he came up with initially as a small joke.

SPOILER for LOLA and MILENA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Actually this story happens in the manga long after kite's death. Gon and Killua were training in the town with Bisky to fight Knuckle and shoot. They had already met Netero, Knov and Morel. Met Palm and Knuckle. Gyro was already reborn and was at the same town as Gon and Killua. The actual sentence from Manga chapter 204 is '' Gyro left town and disappeared without encountering Gon. Whether this proved to be fortunate for either party will not be known until they ultimately meet. The point is, do you think the show should have shown Gyro's backstory in this part or like the manga? The manga took advantage of the story line where Gon and Gyro were in the same location to connect his backstory with the possibility of meeting. I think the show decided to show it soon because the studio knew it wouldn't have enough content to animate beyond the election arc.

Juca Abelheira

"it can't be a spoiler since it was revealed by the mangaka himself" they're not reading the manga, they're watching the anime, everyone makes theories about Gyro the first time they watch it until the end of the arc, you literally took that away from them

Wallas

I personally couldn't disagree more. My one and only grievance with CSM so far is how abhorrently sexualised all the women are, and how these sexualisations come from every woman in the show to be a sexual being for Denji, our 16 y/o mc. The only woman in the show to not be objectified is Kobeni, who fits the 'frail and small until she breaks' (I think it's called 'yandere') type. Albeit, one thing the anime does is completely nullify any seuxalisation through character design, which would be really appreciated in the absence of blatant misogynistic and male-centric writing. It's an amazing anime so far despite this, but I really think the girls will struggle with how uncomfortable and gross the writing is. It does genuinely feel like its written by an incel, with our mc as a self insert. Would love to hear more thoughts on this and different viewpoints.

Jackamo Bailey

Gyro and Gon… maybe we wil see this someday…

Petr Boháč

The beginning of the arc is not slow per say but by the time you finish the arc, you look back on the earlier episodes and realize that almost nothing was happening in comparison to what's to come :)

Rahaf

For some reason the anime didn't added a line that the manga has. St the end of gyro backstory the narrator says "Gon and gyro never met. If that is good or bad we'll never know, until they will actually met"

Termind Terguta

Before you know it these reaction videos will run longer than 1 hour because there is so much to discuss/theorize about

Adrian

“In his small, troubled world, his father was essentially God, and no matter how cruel he was to him, he continued to idolize him.” Gyro = Gon (jk, but seriously it’s fascinating to consider the parallels between them, to read Gon’s story in light of Gyro’s—especially since Gyro was age 12 when he snapped and killed his father, the same age as Gon at the start of the show).

AE

About the after ep discussion: How do you pick up on themes so quickly, it makes me so mad

natan

u have to wait until you watch Haikyuu before you make the mugs...I have a feeling half the cast of Haikyuu will make it on your mugs 😂

Bibi

The first REAL dark episode of the series. With many more to come

Dalek

Zaikahal is one of the best and most important characters and I'm impressed Lola instinctively picked up on that. The guy that was talking to Zaikahal is my favorite character in the whole show.

Shivering King Banana

I think it only feels slow on the rewatch cause we already know all the setup but knowing all the setup doesn't really give us a new perspective on rewatch like it does when you rewatch early seasons of AOT.

Shivering King Banana

Mind you Gon’s reaction was most concerned because he hasn’t seen anything like that before.

ForiegnKarma

I'll definitely stump for it once S2 is in sight

Isaac

Wow, that does negatively effect the anime. I always wondered what the purpose of the elaborate backstory was. And it can't be a spoiler since it was revealed by the mangaka himself at this time. And I think they should know this piece of info too.

ODIS

...and then, just as you thought things can't get any worse, Pennywise makes an appearance.

Orr Malus

I think Gyro's dad is still a bit better than Gon's dad, don't you think so, Lola? Just a bit. 😁

Kevin Inoj Perez

Hmm, I might have to watch CSM again, because even though they’re heavily sexualized, I still remember liking most of the characters and thinking they made sense. LM’s thoughts on it could be interesting but I think it’s a long shot.

SwampFox95

Wow...I think that was the BIG spoiler for now, but at the same time I think it's better for them to know now...it's still better to put a spoiler warning

Wallas

Exactlyyy in my opinion I think this whole arc wouldn't hit the same without this buildup tbh...no one would care about a bunch of ants that we don't know fighting lmaooo. getting to know all the different ants and their different characteristics helps so much.

StrawHat

I was looking forward to this episode and I knew the theories about Gyro would be crazy, I feel like a new arckeman theory was born lol But, if there's one thing you're probably already know about hxh at this point, it's that it doesn't follow any writing rules, so don't break your head over it, enjoy the journey.

Wallas

I think this would be a good series to get into once the second season has a release date

Vict

No idea why some people say this part of the show is slower, I'm glad you agree. This anime's pace is purposely and plainly fast and discussions between characters are essential and important

Yū Nishinoya

Will be very interesting to see their reaction to that one for sure

Wandering

It's episodes like this that remind me how good Hunter x Hunter is... the storytelling is too gooddd. I wish I could erase my memory and watch it again but rewatching with yall is just as good.

StrawHat

86 has a female lead you need to watch!

Toidleboy

I definitely thought Gyro was the king when I first watched the anime.

Wandering

The fact Yunju says "I didn't feel like fighting" makes me think Gyro must have already been a nen user, as up until that point he'd only fought humans that couldn't mount even a tiny defense. Doesn't make sense to me that he'd expect any kind of a fight considering the one sided slaughter they'd just been on.

Kya Colosseum

Agreed, I can't wait till it pays off and we see the conclusion.

Shivering King Banana

For sure, that death is so incredibly graphic for an anime where people fight with magic powers, it's so disturbingly real with the body twitching and everything. And it happens to a character that couldn't be more innocent, this arc is cruel. Also on strong female characters in anime, this is gonna sound really strange but Chainsaw Man has great and strong female characters. I know you wouldn't think from the title that it's for you but I'd at least consider it. That said, only season 1 is out and season 2 is a long way off especially with how the workers of that studio are currently fairing, so I wouldn't blame you for passing regardless.

Nina

Imo, I think Gyro didn't reacted in anyway and that annoyed Yunju. Not that Yunju recognized him, but that's just my opinion.

Rare

Girls! Set up a merch store where you sell mugs with your faces! Please! I will grow flowers in them, but they will be flowers from your home country of Eastern Europe! Then I can confuse guests by showing off a mug with random girl's faces that I use to grow foreign plants!

Billy Overlord

Lola hating Light gives me life

HenryM

Yeah, it's better they know now

Isaac

I feel lola's opinion on Light so much!!! I honestly never thought I would find someone who hates him more than me but maybe Lola is close lmaooooo

StrawHat

The anime sadly cuts out a scene that I do think negatively effects the arc slightly due to the ambiguity it creates, but still this episode is one of my favourites. The manga ends Gyro's backstory by saying that Gyro was reborn as an ant, but because his will was so strong he was reborn remembering everything about his previous life immediately. He's then shown leaving the nest, with the narrator saying "Gyro left and disappeared without encountering Gon. Whether this proved to be fortunate for either party will not be known until they ultimately meet." Think the true significance of the backstory was to show just how twisted an organisation of humans has just been fed to the queen.

Kya Colosseum

I recommend Akame ga Kill if you’re looking for a more strong female roles😇but it’s very short compared to most anime’s.

ForiegnKarma

Did you noticed that Gyro doesn't say a single word in the flashback? His physical features are not showed as well, so we don't know how he looks like. Togashi told us a very heartbroken story of a guy without showing him properly, or even making him saying anything at all. From all flashbacks I have watched from several animes, this is my favorite one.

Max__

This episode is insaaaaaaane. Gyro backstory is just so well made

Matheus

This is one of the most shocking episodes in the show, if you go back and watch one of the early episodes now it’s like two different shows. I adore the phantom troupe and York New arc, but the chimera ant arc is different level, and this is still only the beginning of the arc 🔥

JATLA

Been very excited for this episode. Thank you very much!
