I just love your reaction to bisky’s power! she’s such a cutie that sometimes you forget how strong she is 😅

léna

Completly agree! I believe that Gon does tend to be selfish, but more in a impuslive reckless way than a non caring one ykwim? But he def cares a lot about people and is a good kid generaly speaking

Thali Alexis

Criticizing something and being harsh I believe it is two diferent things. The boy unfortunately doesn't have anyone to teach him though this path tho. So it is understable

Thali Alexis

Thanks! Sometimes when a Hatsu confuses me I think of what needs to happen to activate it or what are the drawbacks are, tends to help.

Darrach

I think this is one of the clearest explanations in the thread, nice job! I hadn't considered the fact that making the cards only work in the game or upon clearing it was a condition, that's super cool. I just accepted it at face value.

Nonam

depends on the person, but we have seen many cases of this. I think it follows the idea that it comes off as magic until science is applied, but I think parts of it can't be explained.

Nathan Elkin

i think a lot of ppl and reactors (especially some of my friends 😭) start to disregard the good aspects that make up a majority of Gon’s character once the more concerning traits are displayed more. It becomes all they can focus on. which makes me a bit sad as he is my favorite character and he really is a good boy at heart…!

Lucie McCoy

I think of Nen conditions like shining light through a magnifying lens. If Nen with no conditions is unfiltered light, it’s not particularly strong, but when forced through a focusing lens, it becomes many times stronger. Chrollo having 5 conditions to activate his stealing ability is like 5 lenses, each adding power to the Nen ability at the end. Kurapika having his ‘chain jail’ ability limited to 13 people in the entire world (the phantom troupe) makes it unbelievably focused on said 13 people, and essentially an unbeatable move for those caught in it. This can be applied to almost any ability (Hatsu) when you break it down. Breath of Archangel is only able to be used outside of the island when the game is beaten, a feat not a single hunter has achieved thus far. An incredibly difficult condition to achieve means an incredibly strong ability, and even then it is only able to used once.

Darrach

Nen works exactly like how the writer wants it to work because Nen doesn't exist.

Orr Malus

Gon is the only one who really gets angry whenever he sees injustice treatment for strangers, the only one rushing to help strangers without expecting gratitude, the only one healing injured in hunter exam, the only one caring even for animals. I love Killua more than Gon, but let's be honest, Killua wouldn't care if some random stranger get killed or injustice treatment, he would only care for himself and the people he love. Can we call him selfish given this approach only? Of course not. It is more logical to see Gon as a kid who is trying to learn and discover, a kid who love adventure and trying new things, but that doesn't define his entire personality. Selfish is such a harsh word for someone as pure as Gon. His actions in this episode is similar to his fight against Netero in the ball game. Both Killua and Gon knew they couldn't beat Netero, Killua walks away, he will never fight a stronger opponent. While Gon has created a new challenge for himself by forcing Netero to use his left hand and succeeded! These small things make different for Gon personality, he always manages to find happiness and optimism in every situation. He is simple and complicated. I agree some of his actions may be considered toxic, but for sure they are not driven by selfishness, it's much deeper. Approaching Gon's actions by linking them to selfishness will prevent you from enjoying his personality.

FFme

Gon being selfish is necessarily a bad thing in these type of situations. Remember Gon is a child & and he’s fighting murderer who kills innocent people & Gon is all about justice I don’t feel like it’s a wrong way to go about it if your putting yourself at risk if your not hurting nobody else. Killua has been trained since birth so he has already experienced battle’s most likely.

ForiegnKarma

Nen is kinda like math or alchemy from FMA, a complicated enough equation can result in ultra specific outcomes Greed Island in and of itself is a giant combination of math equations that create a system that allows the cards to work, even something like Angel’s Breath can be created from enough layered and concentrated Nen abilities

space1999

Ahh I really can’t help myself from commenting whenever you bring up Kurapika, I’m honestly embarrassed lol. His story is REALLY important and diverse. Trust me he’s got a LOT of amazing things in store for him. It continues later in the manga where he is the main character right now. I hope you can read his backstory to get an idea of what his childhood dreams were. That’s an important aspect right now, that and sadness of course. No need to forget about Melody or Leorio either.

I always imagined Nen kind of worked how programming works...like your body is the hardware (lots of circuits and gates for electricity) and then the software is like your specialised nen category and abilities. Greed Island is one big computer game that mostly Ging made, and it's because it has so many crazy conditions and rules that something like Breath of Archangel can be used in real life, but only when you beat the game and clear all the conditions can it be made real

Ben G

This is my favorite thing about greed island. At first you assume it's just a game and everything is made up. But when you find out it's the real world, you realize it's an incredibly complex system of Nen abilities from many different people, those being the creators, working together and empowered by numerous conditions like card slots, and their abilities being limited to the island.

Flubbedsquid

How do you even teach someone something if they don't even fear death or pain? He's a kid, but he's clearly not a normal kid. It's hard to know which standard to measure him with. Nen has also basically given him a loaded gun that we can't take away. Also, from a storytelling perspective, I want Gon to have autonomy. I feel like putting most of the blame on Gon's age would take away too much weight from his decisions. Especially, with a character like Killua to contrast him against. It's just a really complex subject when also considering the nature and ages of certain (rg,m) characters and the themes of maturity and growth. That just throws more monkey wrenches into the whole damn thing. Like, we all have biases, so we can't always judge people or things by themselves. We all have a different idea of what's good/bad that we compare something against.

Rare

Does anyone get the feeling Milena really cares about Killua and doesn't want Gon to hurt him? Also yeah as others have kinda said, the stricter the restriction, the more insanely overpowered a nen ability can be (like how Kurapika limited one of his abilities to only Phantom Troupe members, making the chains basically unbreakable). In this case, the card in question is insanely hard to acquire, one time use only, and even harder to bring out of the game (you have to win the game). So a powerful nen user (Ging or one of the other gamemasters) was able to make this insanely powerful card due to all these restrictions. I also just wanna bring up the similarities between Gon's fight here and the ball game he played with Netero on the airship early in the hunter exam. He knew he couldn't beat Netero, but wanted to at least make him use his left hand. He prided himself in making Netero use more of his ability, and it was pretty endearing, but here we're seeing a more fucked up, dangerous version of that same instinct.

Payam Sharifi

Because of its flexibility, Nen truly feels like a life energy. Its applications are so in touch with the personality and expressions of its users. I love that talented artists, athletes, and geniuses unknowingly use Nen as a reflection of the efforts given. It's good stuff!

Ahhh…ah fuck

Nathan Elkin

I feel like they should especially be harsh on him due to the fact that he is a kid. Immaturity with power is dangerous and should be criticized as so.

Komikall

I got you, Lola: First, Nen is a secret to the overwhelming majority of people, so Battera finding someone to pay would be incredibly hard. Those capable probably don't care much about money. The people who created Greed Island are extraordinarily talented and are joining their abilities in creative ways(bound as card effects) with the restriction that they can only be used in the context of the game. The only exception for that is the reward for completing Greed Island. It's an incredible feat that allows treasures and miracles that are beyond normal skill to invoked.

Isaac

It's also most likely only a one time use.

Rare

It's the reason nen is honestly my favourite power system in any media ever. There's always a justification for how overpowered an ability is, in this case being the completion of a game that no-one could do in over a decade. All power comes at a cost through nen, but that cost can either be years of training OR a condition harsh/difficult enough that the power can be gained in an instant.

Kya Colosseum

Nah, Monster is next. Keep that one on the vault chief.

Jack SV

Meanwhile Luffy is trying to save Ace, and I don’t know how the hell Zoro might find his crew mates again. Probably plot. Ever heard of Jujutsu Kaisen, it’s this small indie project that barely no one knows about. You should totally check it out.

Nathan Elkin

I feel you guys a bit harsh on Gon. I get it he pushes himself into dangerous situations to prove himself that he is improving or because he likes those type of dangerous situations but we gotta remember that he still a kid. As a kid you are not really thinking much about the consequences of your actions until you are done doing those actions.

Jack SV

Nahh, he’s just a wee little kid. Totally harmless

Nathan Elkin

But that's something we've seen already in the exam arc, I'm confused when they talk about a storyline that started in this arc. I disagree with the fact that this specific behavior is driven by his curiosity, I think it is related with Ging. He says to Hanzo that if he acts in a certain way he'll never be able to meet his father

Yū Nishinoya

Oh boy, you guys watched the next episode already? I really wanna see how you reacted to that fight because Gon really was pushing it. Also to answer Milena's thoughts regarding Kurapika, Phantom Troupe, and their storyline, it is revisited further down the manga. I know you said that it would not make sense for their storyline to be brought up way into the future of the manga, but trust me it makes sense according to the flow of the story and its development. The chimera ant arc has somewhat of a tonal shift and that shift is present throughout the story from there on out. So, when it is revisited, it feels fresh. Also, Togashi (mangaka of HxH) said that his direction with the story was adventurous both for him and literally. What I mean is that he never had too much of a plan for specific events, but he does have a vision of the characters as a whole. I honestly really hope that by the end of the anime, you guys read the manga and maybe instead of a video, write a nice little review for the Patreon fans :D

Komikall

Also, regarding the Breath of the Archangel card, you guys seem to be confused how something OP can be obtained through Greed Island. Recap, Kurapika has various conditions to activate his skills. Chrollo as well has 4-5 conditions to be able to steal someone else's ability. The main takeaway is that the more difficult the condition is, the more powerful Nen becomes. In order to bring Breath of the Archangel out of the game to be used in the real world, the player must obtain 100 freakingly difficult cards. The difficulty in finishing the game is insane if you consider, that's why they are able to have the card as a "prize" if they chose to.

Rex Tan

Bisky, in all her glory

Nathan Elkin

As pointed by Genthru, Gon can be considered insane. His resolve and his stubbornness are irrational and ilogical, he's driven by pure curiosity. He's postponing the plan just to see Genthru using his power, and to prove that he's strong enough to make Genthru use it. A stable person would never risk their own life at this point. He didn't learn a thing from Tsezguerra telling him to stop being reckless and selfish lol

Max__

They already watched it

AE

Hi Lola & Milena, since you're nearing episode 75, after you watch 75, there's an option to watch episode 1 of the 1999 version before watching episode 76, since it will provide additional back story since the 2011 version skipped most of it.

Rex Tan

I had no idea today was a hxh day! Excellent. 😎🤙

AoT Comment, the SiM music video for the full length Under the Tree was kinda a good refresher of everything and just gets you back into the mental (depression).
