Kyoto animation, the studio who created this animation is known for their distinct style, like you mentioned, taking care of extreme details and conveying the atmosphere in a beautiful way. But in 2019 the studio was attacked by one crazy guy who conducted arson in a studio and he killed 36 animators and injured 34, which included many who were heavily involved in the work of Violet. This was not only an extremely rare case of mass murder in Japan but such a shocking event in Japanese anime history but the studio was so determined to recover from this tragedy and they completed the movie version of Violet after the incident which really shows their resilience and I really recommend you to watch as well.

Because it's raining, I didn't go out with my girlfriend today and we had a nice relaxing indoor day. The anime Frieren gets 10/10 points from me so far. A really cute story. If it ends with a nice concluded finale, it gets my 100% recommendation after Ranking of Kings, though I'd still want to see A Place Further Than the Universe before that.

I had this on my list too when I read the description of it for the current fall season. It sounds very sweet and sad, but also hopeful. The only problem is that the anime will not be complete this season with about 2 chapters per episode. According to Wikipedia, the manga has over 100 chapters and isn't finished yet. However, if the anime has a satisfying ending, it can certainly be put in the recommended list. Otherwise, I would wait until more has been adapted.

I love this episode. It introduces in my opinion Violet's best friend: Luculia (Lu-ku-li-ja). She just has this lovely friendly character. Without her, Violet might have given up on her dream. I'm looking forward to the later episodes.
By the way: The first two episodes had no opening and ending. They were only introduced in this episode, possibly because you see Violet's situation in these (clothes, profession), and Kyoto Animation didn't want to spoil it.

STRONG agree! It's so thoughtful and wonderful, I thought they might like it as I was watching as well!

Let me clear this up for you:
The anime is different from the book, but has roughly told very similar stories, with some omitted and other characters introduced. For example, we have Iris and Erika instead of the demigod Lux. The main difference is that the character Violet is younger and more naive. Also, the finale in the anime is very different from the finale in the second book in its objective and implementation.
The OVA belongs between episodes 4 and 5 and can be found as a 30 minute special on Netflix (not available in the book). The first movie is strongly oriented to the second chapter in the third book, but has been greatly expanded that it fills 90 minutes.
The second film is completely anime original, but ultimately aims to get to the same ending as in the book with its last 15 minutes, which feels wrong due to the different narrative in the anime. The first 120 minutes of the second movie are perfect. I loved them, and then suddenly it just gets weird...
But I also know that the fanbase is split here. Others say: It's a good ending. Others say: terrible decision to end it this way.

This episode hits incredibly hard, and it's the first of many to do so. I also just wanna drop a recommendation for Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, which started airing recently and gives me some Violet Evergarden vibes. It's another great female protagonist too!

I feel like this show makes even more sense to come out of Japan, since their culture usually keeps them very reserved and they don't really share their feelings often. They even have specific words (honne and tatemae) in their language to describe "being raw" and staying behind a "wall" where they keep their feelings. And I've heard interviews with Japanese people about this topic where so many of them say that they would keep up that wall like 70% of the time.

@ODIS I thought the whole anime strayed from the novel. This what I read from another post but the anime is vastly different from the novel or was it manga (one of the two or both). The order of events are different and Violet's personality was slightly different too. As well her having some kind of battleaxe. The original source also had magical elements to it while this was more - dare I say realistic? With guns and bullets and WW2 kind of feel to it.

Tissues? I need litre bottles of water on hand from how many tears this show makes me shed, honestly forgot just how good it is.
With your reaction to this show I cannot reccommend "A Place Further Than the Universe" enough. It's a short show with the same kind of focus on love and friendship as this, as well as having an all female main cast to boot.

Apparently one movie is good, the other one isnt. Haven't seen either, but apparently one strays from the novel or something.

Violet's first letter would always get me hardest. The sister's struggle to simply tell her brother how glad she was that he came home from the war. And the brother's struggle to find solace in the guilt he felt being unable to protect his parents. Ah, what a emotional roller coaster this show is. Just as draining as FMAB sometimes

@HenryM Idk about the movies not being "good" but rather "unnecessary". For me personally it's a good way to wrap up the series (not gonna say more due to spoilers) but I can also see why some say they didn't like them. Still, I think it's best for them to just watch it and make their own opinions on it.

lol, well, then you watched all you needed to watch, the rest of the seasons are pretty shitty. i'd say you cound watch roanoke as a stand alone and it's pretty solid and has a lot of sarah paulson.
but yeah, next time you could have an obsession with an actress that does less horror stuff π

watching a slasher so i guess i'll watch this tomorrow.
i like this but it's the kind of show you need to be in a certain mood to watch and certainly not a show to watch after watching a bunch of high schoolers be murdered in creative ways.
by the way, i saw a tweet about american horror story and how lana winters is THE scream queen in asylum and it got me thinking that if milena said she loved sarah paulson but hates horror... does that mean that she hasn't watched ahs? at some of it, specially the first couple seasons are amazing.
by the way, it's past midnight, so happy birthday lola π

Just watched the intro and idk if someone has mentioned it but there are 2 movies and 1 OVA special. The OVA can be watched after episode 4 and the movies can be watched after finishing the season. The movies and OVA are also on Netflix, so you dont have to worry about getting it from another source
